Just completed the game as the Russians SP. Brutal I would say. Results are as follows:
VP Japan "won" with 141,000. US/Allies 133870. Russia 117290. Germany 106615
Basically, the Germans had Norway and the Axis Allies had Dakar of all places. I had all of Europe and also got off an invasion of Africa to take over Oran, Bengazi, and Tripoli. Tobruk has been raized. Had I been more motivated, I am sure I could have captured a city or two in Norway and possibly even knocked out the Germans, but I don't feel like going back to try the last 10 turns and try to rush build enough invasion fleets to get the job done.
In the far east, Japan decided to declare war on me late and I took Seoul, Mukden and Peking from them (Peking fell on the last turn and my attacking tank army had 2 hps left on it and it was its last attack). The US showed up and took Akita and Osaka in the Japanese mainland and had also gotten Manila back.
Overall, the Red Army had 454 units and the breakdown went like this:
44 workers
26 rifle corps
23 rifle armies
116 milita
18 artillery
4 subs
4 destroyers
19 army markers
10 red army communist gurellias
1 cruiser
8 flack
4 heavy artillery (was around 14 but I disbanded about 10 to help rush build the invasion fleets for North Africa)
10 T34 corps
14 T34 Army
21 Fort divs
17 cav divs
2 mech armies
27 T34/85 corps
34 T34/85 armies
10 Yak
2 Sturmovik
32 IL4
3 Stalin Tank army
8 partisan
Conduct of operations was to counter attack after the Germans unloaded their offensive. It took awhile before I was able to be in a position to take anything as the Germans sent a lot to the front and I was busy defending mostly in the south. Eventually, I was able to mount a counter attack in the Kiev area and retake those two cities and shorten my front. I also managed to start putting pressure on Odessa and finally cracked it. After that, I took out Finland to free up troops. I started to attack into the Balkans, figuring that the minor Axis defenders would not be as numerous or as tough and I was pretty much correct. I saw very little armor from them and their infantry corps are a whole lot easier to take out than German Mech or Panther/Tigers. The Germans basically built up each city with at least 1 mech corp and then built a lot of tank corps and I mean a lot. I was fending off Panther attacks for a long time and then there was a lull as I figured they were switching over to Tigers and I was correct. In that lull, I managed to break into Italy and take the northern cities and Rome before turning north to rip into Germany from the south. I had a pile of Tigers to deal with the rest of the game and they are just nasty. I managed to launch a drive from the south up through the middle of Germany to the sea and divide Germany into two and screw up their production as they did not have the resources to build the tanks. Many of the isolated areas continued to build a lot of divisions (both minor Axis and Germany) and they continued to infiltrate and harrass across the front, but divisons are much easier to deal with than corps.
The Germans used their armies well early and I had to face several armies that had 2 Panther corps in them and then another unit with them (usually an infantry corps I think). These were very difficult to deal with and I was suprised the AI came up with them that good, because this has been a area of weakness for the AI (loading good troops in armies and even using them in the first place).
Overall, I enjoyed it and I have a US game I have been tinkering with as well. Highlights from that were the sinking of the entire Pearl Harbor raid force and another Japanese carrier and fast transport on the first US move of the game. The US also have control of Dakar and have moved into North Africa and it is something like early to mid 1942. The subs have been annoying, but I am close to finishing off improved destroyers, so the subs should become an issue of the past. In the Pacific, Truk has fallen and so have several of the Japanese outposts in the eastern central Pacific. It is almost a shame to continue to play when you sink 7 Japanese carriers on the first turn of the game because you know the Japanese fleet will never recover from a carrier standpoint of view.
All these games were on Emperor level of difficulty setting.
