Hinge of Fate - World War 2, 1941-1945

Very interesting on using the map symbols.

I share this opinion. :)

Gary Childress, may be you make these buildings small graphics available to the public in the CFC graphics forum (I suppose you have the buildings large graphics, too). Edited: I confused the buildings small/large screen term with the units 32 file.

I'll post a pcx file in the graphics forum but I think this is mostly suited for WW2 scenarios. I'm not sure what the appropriate military symbols would be for any period before WW1. I didn't do buildings, just units.

Also I just left the ships the way they were. There really aren't any standard military symbols for different types of ships that I'm a aware of. I'll have to look into it some more.

I added the Bn units mostly because I sort of think the units are neat. So I thought I'd throw them in there too. I actually have them symbolized as brigades but didn't bother to change the name in the editor from what I originally added. :)

Thanks. And there are alot of WW 2 scenarios for Civ 3 hanging around, where this can be a nice alternative. :)

Single player for Germany and Minor Axis(Italy)

Notes:

Germany starts off with fewer army units and U-Boats than in the MP version
and they do not get a golden age at the start.
Also the Russians are beefed up a bit and the production rate
of the Keil U-boat wonder is slower.

Didn't do anything special for Italy, they are tough enough to play
already.

NOTE:
If you want to give this a test run you MUST download
the 100 Mbyte HOF_V2 folder. If you E-mail me or PM me
I will give you the link.

Just completed the game as the Russians SP. Brutal I would say. Results are as follows:

VP Japan "won" with 141,000. US/Allies 133870. Russia 117290. Germany 106615

Basically, the Germans had Norway and the Axis Allies had Dakar of all places. I had all of Europe and also got off an invasion of Africa to take over Oran, Bengazi, and Tripoli. Tobruk has been raized. Had I been more motivated, I am sure I could have captured a city or two in Norway and possibly even knocked out the Germans, but I don't feel like going back to try the last 10 turns and try to rush build enough invasion fleets to get the job done.

In the far east, Japan decided to declare war on me late and I took Seoul, Mukden and Peking from them (Peking fell on the last turn and my attacking tank army had 2 hps left on it and it was its last attack). The US showed up and took Akita and Osaka in the Japanese mainland and had also gotten Manila back.

Overall, the Red Army had 454 units and the breakdown went like this:

44 workers
26 rifle corps
23 rifle armies
116 milita
18 artillery
4 subs
4 destroyers
19 army markers
10 red army communist gurellias
1 cruiser
8 flack
4 heavy artillery (was around 14 but I disbanded about 10 to help rush build the invasion fleets for North Africa)
10 T34 corps
14 T34 Army
21 Fort divs
17 cav divs
2 mech armies
27 T34/85 corps
34 T34/85 armies
10 Yak
2 Sturmovik
32 IL4
3 Stalin Tank army
8 partisan

Conduct of operations was to counter attack after the Germans unloaded their offensive. It took awhile before I was able to be in a position to take anything as the Germans sent a lot to the front and I was busy defending mostly in the south. Eventually, I was able to mount a counter attack in the Kiev area and retake those two cities and shorten my front. I also managed to start putting pressure on Odessa and finally cracked it. After that, I took out Finland to free up troops. I started to attack into the Balkans, figuring that the minor Axis defenders would not be as numerous or as tough and I was pretty much correct. I saw very little armor from them and their infantry corps are a whole lot easier to take out than German Mech or Panther/Tigers. The Germans basically built up each city with at least 1 mech corp and then built a lot of tank corps and I mean a lot. I was fending off Panther attacks for a long time and then there was a lull as I figured they were switching over to Tigers and I was correct. In that lull, I managed to break into Italy and take the northern cities and Rome before turning north to rip into Germany from the south. I had a pile of Tigers to deal with the rest of the game and they are just nasty. I managed to launch a drive from the south up through the middle of Germany to the sea and divide Germany into two and screw up their production as they did not have the resources to build the tanks. Many of the isolated areas continued to build a lot of divisions (both minor Axis and Germany) and they continued to infiltrate and harrass across the front, but divisons are much easier to deal with than corps.

The Germans used their armies well early and I had to face several armies that had 2 Panther corps in them and then another unit with them (usually an infantry corps I think). These were very difficult to deal with and I was suprised the AI came up with them that good, because this has been a area of weakness for the AI (loading good troops in armies and even using them in the first place).

Overall, I enjoyed it and I have a US game I have been tinkering with as well. Highlights from that were the sinking of the entire Pearl Harbor raid force and another Japanese carrier and fast transport on the first US move of the game. The US also have control of Dakar and have moved into North Africa and it is something like early to mid 1942. The subs have been annoying, but I am close to finishing off improved destroyers, so the subs should become an issue of the past. In the Pacific, Truk has fallen and so have several of the Japanese outposts in the eastern central Pacific. It is almost a shame to continue to play when you sink 7 Japanese carriers on the first turn of the game because you know the Japanese fleet will never recover from a carrier standpoint of view.

All these games were on Emperor level of difficulty setting.

Klyden:
Thanks for that report. Usually the AI is hopeless
playing Japan, in a lot of games they can't even take
Manilla, but sometimes they do get lucky.

Being nice to China can help keep Japan from getting too
far, giving them horses will allow them to build cav. units
and you can bother Japan using your red army hidden units.

It does sound like the VP locations may need some adjustment,
that should have been an overwheming victory for Russia.

I'm adding these to HOF V2

nice,

when will the update come?

I have been messing around as the Germans and it is March 1944. I probably won't finish the game (18 turns to go) as I don't think I will get enough victory points to win and don't really see how I can get many more victory locations.

Current standings are Axis 95525, Allies 65020, Japan 54610, Russia 10320.

As you can see, the Russians went down first. I withdrew several stacks of units in the east to reorganize and proceeded to put a heavy drive together for Leningrad, which I captured pretty quickly. Suprisingly, I also managed to make some ground in the south, which I did not expect and wound up stretching myself thin as I struggled to find garrisons for the new territory I was capturing.

I found myself able to move around and capture cities in southern Russian rather easily, but I wound up having to pull units back to join with the northern armies to make a major push on Moscow, which fell after a hard fight. The rest of Russia soon followed before long and Russia was reduced to Vladivostok and their city in China. I was also able to score success in North Africa and knocked the Brits out of the Med for the most part, except that Gibraltar still stands for the moment.

With the second half of 1943, the invasion of the UK became a reality and after a stiff fight for London, my armies were victorious and the UK was mine with Ireland falling in March of 1944.

With only 18 turns left, I don't have a lot of time to strike at remaining VP centers, but some locations could be Vladivostok, India believe it or not and most certainly Gibraltar. I had thought about invading Newfoundland as a base to stage an attack on North America, but there were no VP centers I would likely get to (Washington was it on the east coast).

I did not go for Tigers and instead concentrated on aircraft developments. (Jets were a couple of turns away).

The Germans had the following to work with:

43 workers
1 Marine Corps
3 Marine Divs
18 milita
17 flak
12 artillery
4 heavy artillery (plus about 5 more captured)
3 transport
3 invasion fleet
12 army markers
6 panzer corps
6 panzer division
1 para div
10 Panther Corps
3 Panther tank divs
2 mech corps
4 mech divs
9 border gds
12 fortress divs
23 infantry corps
57 infantry divs
3 battleship
2 battlecruiser
2 heavy cruiser
8 destroyers
14 subs
1 fast transport
1 AA cruiser
21 ME 109
4 Stuka
4 JU-88
7 FW-190
2 Heavy bomber

Overall, a fun run.

I'm trying to finish the multi-player game by the end
of the month. Single player versions a few weeks later.

Okey, I'll be waiting ;-)

I tried to play the Axis short game but i got an error.

Hoffman44:
That's one of the units that HOF uses from the WW2 Pacific Conquest.

Possible causes are:
1. You don't have Conquests
2. You have placed the scenario file in the wrong folder.

Hey eric i've been playing in a play by email in this it is quite fun. It has all the fun off WW2 global without the obnoxious turn times. So how did you get the names of the places on the map.
