Hello.

I have tried for many hours to find online resources of historical populations of various places.

I'm calling today to ask if anybody knows any good online free resources that have records of the historical populations of individual places in Europe, Middle East, Africa, the Americas and Oceania.

By historical populations I mean numbers of the population of an area and then split down in to the individual ethnicities, from around the 1820-1860 time period.

For instance:

Year: 1856
Place: City of London
Ethnic Make-up: 92% English
7% Irish

So basically does anybody know of websites or other resources that have this sort of information?

I would suggest an almanac, which are actually much better in book form. Almanacs tend to have details about ethnic makeups and sometimes even population density.

To the library!

The US is easy to find. I googled: Historical US census
and the first link gave me this:

http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/collections/stats/histcensus/

Very detailed census stats (1790-1960) for the US. You can even break it down into state and county levels.

Then by googling 'historical _____ census' for the country of your choice you can find others.

http://www.statcan.ca/english/freepub/11-516-XIE/sectiona/sectiona.htm
and earlier Canada:
http://www.statcan.ca/english/freepub/98-187-XIE/geo1.htm
UK:
http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/census/all_censuses_page.jsp

For some countries you would probably have better luck googling in that country's language if you know that language.

Bamspeedy and Hyperborean, I wish to thank you.

Thank you! :D
