Thought you guys (in particular the long time members here) might enjoy this...

I'm the middle of a big Civ series scenario hunt and at the moment I'm finishing my Civ 2 scenario preservation work digging up heaps of long lost Civ2 websites on webarchive and rescuing what I can.

While doing these searches I've come across different eras of CivFanatics history which is quite fun to compare to the huge modern day site we have now! Funny to think that much like my website it all started with Thunderfall making a little Geocities page in the late 90s haha.

If anyone wants to take a trip down memory lane then here they are.. the eras of CivFanatics :)

Webarchive backup of CivFanatics - Geocities Era (Late 90s)
Webarchive backup of CivFanatics - Xoom Era (Early 2000s - sadly very incomplete)
Webarchive backup of CivFanatics - Strategy Gaming Era (Mid 2000s)
Webarchive backup of CivFanatics - Atomic Gamer Era (Early 2010s)

Great fun to remember. Thanks.

Geocities era is before my time but I did at least know about it. The 'Xoom' site is completely new to me. TF please bring back the 'COOL MIDI' link, the site is incomplete without COOL MIDI.

I always use the classic theme, 'cause it reminds me of the mid-2000's look.

That's some good detective work, Blake! :goodjob: Brings back fond memories... :crazyeye:

I was pretty into FF7 at that time... That Cosmo Canyon theme was one of my favs. :band:

Cheers to The_J for posting about this thread on the main news page. :)

I forgot to say here that if there's any oldschool Civilization 2 fans still lurking here then it might interest you to see that after making this 'History of CivFanatics' thread I've started making a similar 'History of the Civilization 2 Scenario League' thread over in the CFC SL forums as much like CFC the SL went through many coats of paint and different hosts over the decades but still lives on today! :)

Was the Strategy Gaming Era really mid-2000s? That's the look I remember, but I thought I started playing way before 2000. In any case, cool to trip down memory lane for this (recently returned) old-timer :)

Question for those of us who haven't been around very long - what was Xoom? And for that matter, maybe Strategy Gaming? Was that a host of CFC prior to TeleFragged? I remember the TeleFragged era, which IIRC went until around the mid-2010s.

Now I'm off to learn some Nonsense, as I would have been doing had I been on the site in the early 2000's...

If you click on the links to the webarchives copies you can browse back through the months and years using their controls. From what I can see you're right and the Strategy Gaming Era did kick off in the early 2000s as the Xoom era didn't seem to last too long. But since the Strategy Gaming Era continued through most of the 2000s I 'evened it out' and said mid 2000s haha.

TeleFragged? Sounds like I missed an era! Although I marked/separated the eras in the post by either web address or visual changes so no doubt I missed a bunch of different 'in-between' hosts where the address stayed the same and the site looked the same but it was on a totally different host/server behind the scenes.

Gosh that's some interesting stuff. I wonder what else is out there to dig up once more.

Civ II scenarios... I actually flanged something up once upon a time. Pond World was a world where there was but one body of open water anywhere... and it was a pond. There were a few rivers scattered around. The terrain was nothing but grassland, everywhere.

And if your first settler popped into being near the Pond or a river, you would be okay. If you were far from water, you were apt to die as no irrigation could happen.

It’s funny though, when you say historical eras I think to convergences of debated topics, how people debated, what opinions where popular, and who the prominent posters were.

I wonder if there would be a way to compile such information.
