Hmm - 3 UK release dates

Now that Civ has gone gold (is finished) and the official release in the US is 25th October. The UK release is on the same date or slightly later.

I need to have it shipped to Netherlands. So the question for me is how much time will there be between UK release and Dutch release. If it's more than 5 days I can order it from UK, otherwise not.

Where can I get it soonest?

Has anyone pre-ordered a game from Play.com before, and if so did it arive on day of release?

When i pre-ordered a game, no it didn't. Because of the free postage (2nd class), it has the possibility of coming later. Generally they are a good company, but are prone to cock-up every now and then.

To the guy who enquired about "going Gold" -

Going Gold is when game development is finally frozen, and the gold master CD/DVD/whatever is sent off to get duplicated into the copies we will later buy. At least that's how i've always understood it. Basically, it means the game is FINISHED, and what is on that disc will be the game we buy in the stores.

Ok, thanks for the details:)

I don't mind if it's a little later, cuz at £17.99 thats some saving! Hopefully it will be dispatched a couple of days before release date, and so arrive on time.

this is so stressing. im hoping for the 21st so that i could play it before i go for vacation. amazon is dissapoointing me in this one. i always put so much trust in them.

I totally agree. I sent them a few queries and everytime they confirmed the early ship dates.

I sent them another query today based on the press release. Told them should tell me when they will ship it for real, or I will cancel the order and get it cheaper at Play.com.

Why people prefer Amazon.co.uk when play.com has it for much cheaper price and with free delivery?

We fall for their tactics of using made up but early release dates.

The only trustworthy date out of the three is the Play.com one - 28/10. Going by past experience of all the services, Amazon are notoriously poor at not only posting accurate release dates but in dispatching games to get to you on or before the real release date.

Terrible experiences of preordering with Amazon (games not being dispatched for up to 1 week after they're in the shops) means I don't use them anymore and stick with Play.com.

I have Civ4 preordered from Play.com and have been checking my order over the last few days. If 21/10 was in any way true as a release date then they would've changed the order status to processing right about now (they ALWAYS dispatch early). Status still at preordered, and expected date still 28/10 I'm afraid.

Posted this on another thread. It sums up my opinions about the super-early UK release date:

I seriously doubt the game's coming out on Friday. That is, 4 days before the US release date, which is impossible.

Why?

- The game has just gone gold. How do you expect shipments to arrive in two days? I doubt any British store paid huge amounts of money to get the game with such anticipation.
- American-made games are always released in the United States first.

I use play.com regularly and have never had a problem with delivery. Having said that I've never pre-ordered anything, but goods I order usually arrive within 2-4 days even though delivery is free.

According to the front page it's a 4th of November release for Europe I suppose that includes the UK  That's quite depressing all things considered. I was so happy earlier when I heard it had gone gold as well.

I know, i'm really not impressed, i had a 3 day weekend from the 28th as well... really not impressed.

If you just think it's gonna come out on the later date (4th Nov), then you can only be surprised if it comes out sooner.

I would have thought that it will come out on the 28th in the UK, as that is the date most places are giving, whilst most Europen sites are giving the 4th.

I should be able to check tomorrow to see if Smiths have them in, they are delivered a few days before they go on the shelf. If not, the 28th looks likely.

Maybe the UK release will be different to the european release, this does however seem highly unlikely. I'm defintetly considering biting the bullet and importing the US Pre-release version, which I'm quite loathed to do to be honest.:(
