HNDY05d AWS-GOMOAW Sir Bugsy's Celts

Preturn: Looks good.

IBT: Another archer seen

2110 BC: Not much for us to do but wait. I pop the hut

IBT: Archer loses to our Spear. Barbarian loses to our warrior.

2070 BC:

IBT: Two Archers seen

2030 BC:

IBT: The archer kills our Elite spear and the city goes into disorder.

1990 BC: Move the Spear and Warrior back into the town. They were previously keeping our lands safe.

IBT: Now they won't go for our town. .

1950 BC: I move a spear back out

IBT: Now they start heading back into their lands??

1910 BC:

IBT: Not sure what the archers are doing...
Build the temple. Start a settler.

1870 BC:

IBT: Archers all over the place.
Build the settler

1830 BC: Will settle the gold.

IBT: Game Over. We get bad RNG again and the capitol falls. Our leader is killed. Sorry guys, I could have put another spear in the capitol, but then I was afraid they would then ignore the capitol and kill our other town. We just couldn't get IW fast enough. We were down to 4 turns before the capitol fell.

Notes:
I think if I had moved the spear into our city we would have survived longer, but I don't think we could have gotten to 4 cities. We would have been stuck at one city, so no army. We were too close and the Arabs grew too fast. This is common in AWS starts.

Game Over, man.

Well it was nice playing with you guys :crazyeye:

Sounds like it may be time to revisit the drawing board.

Yikes, I guess we need to either plan on losing alot of AWS, or maybe go back to AWD which is not exactly easy. I'm thinking Zulu, and the question is - AWD or AWS? If we go AWD, tiny or small map? Sens and Bugsy can join us in the next one since both AWS games don't look like they will last too much longer.

So, let me know if you are in for AW Zulu, and if you prefer AWD (tiny or small) or AWS tiny.

If you gents want I can try an roll another start over the weekend.

If it is any consolation there was no iron nearby so it would have fallen apart either way. Bad RNG or force of numbers.

That didn't look like too bad a start, but without bonus food at the capital we just couldn't expand/grow quickly enough. I have to suspect the Arabs had a food-rich start to pump out 6 settlers in 40 turns. Or more likely, we had an island full of barb huts and an expansionist opponent.

I'll have to peek at the replay. I now suspect that far-flung Arab cities may have appeared at random. Even a maximally corrupt Sid AI city can build an Archer/Spear in 8 turns.

I was thinking of AW Zulu, but they're best suited for a pangea and larger map (to take full advantage of the Impi's pillaging power). How does AWDG Pangea (standard) sound?

FYI - I tried three different starts this weekend, none of which were suitable.

I've got a tiny AWD Zulu that I'm playing that I'll post if you guys are interested. IIRC it is continents 70% water and I've almost gained control of my continent. The opponent on our shores is Carthage, and their UU is a PITA to kill. Spain & Babylon control the other side of the world. The impis are good pillagers, but work much better in pairs it seems. Not there yet, but the Glib looks probable. I'll go last in the order & keep my trap shut to avoid being a spoiler (unless you want to know where the iron is :). Say the word if you guys want to have a go at this.
