HNDY07 AWE Standard Size Pangaea

We got a problem here. Those 8 AC's will all be able to attack Liverpool (1 MP) in 2 turns. The AI will luck out and have the two separate stacks arrive simultaneously. We need to move a unit onto the tile (Hill) 1 N of Liverpool to make the 2nd stack of AC go around it, and arrive 1 turn later than the first stack. We're also going to have to defend by volume, since we can't get the Pike army over there in time.

We have 947 gold in the bank. Don't be afraid to spend some money to rectify the situation. Pikes behind Walls with Barracks may be enough to weather this storm.

We have two pike and 4 MDI in the area. Rush a pike as well and we can probably hold them [Edit: The 8 AC] off since we have walls and are on a hill which is over double the defense if fortified.

I see we will get Saltpeter shortly. For horses we will need to work. I see two sources, one is across the desert. The other looks doable.

We can put a road through (blue line in the following picture with towns on the red and yellow dots) These towns are all on hills so all units defend at double when the towns have walls.

It will take 12 defensive units though, so it needs to wait for us to gain in strength first.

[edit: It would help if I actually included the picture

That looks like a good plan. We will have all the high ground and can move cats back and forth on the mountains to throw rocks down on invaders. A fortress on each mountain with a fortified pike will be a tough nut for the RNG to crack.

BTW - do we have at least 1 city dedicated to cats. We are going to need a bunch of artillery - 100+ - in this one. I hope Leo's gets build close by so we can get cheap upgrades.

Sorry - into my second turn and i would appreciate some advice. The AC stack has broken up a bit, they are in a pair and a couple of 1s, some are dead.

I got Wallace (MilLeader) right at the start of my second turn. The options are FP, Pentagon, Heroic Epic or army, and i am a bit torn. I don't think we need another army right now. My gut inclination is the FP in Newcastle. But the Pentagon would be very useful. The Heroic epic is always great in a game where a lot of armys are needed.

What are your opinions?

Turn 0: 450 AD

I rush a barracks in Liverpool.
Rush a pikeman in Nottingham.
Send out the sacrifical MDI as suggested by T_McC.
Swap London from an MDI to a pike, for the horses plan.

The sacrificial MDI takes out two ACs before dieing, and yellowlines another. 4 ACs can attack next turn, one yellowlined. Lose a redlined MDI to an arab archer.

Turn 1: 460 AD

'pults and trebuchets take a few hp off some ACs at Liverpool. Archer army kills a spear. Longbow kills an archer. Elite archer kills MDI, no leader.

Only one AC attacks, and we lose a pike.

Turn 2: 470 AD

Elite archer has another pop at another MDI, and Wallace is generated.
Kill one AC at Liverpool with MDI. Retreat another. One was going towards undefended Oxford. The stack has broken up. Five left, none with full hp.
Send Wallace off towards London to build the Pentagon.

An AC attacks our MDI and loses, MDI promotes to elite.

Turn 3: 480 AD

Rush the Pentagon.
Longbow kills an Arab spear, elite MDI kills a bombarded Spanish MDI, and Cornwallis appears. I like good luck :D
This one will form the FP in Newcastle, he does it this turn.
Archer kills bombarded Korean pike.

Nothing

Turn 4: 490 AD

FP and Pentagon come in. Income up +21 gpt.
Lose a longbow htting an MDI.
Lose an archer attacking an elite Bab Bowman. They pick up a leader. Kill the bowman and leader with a spear (bowman was redlined).
Join the elite spear that generated Wallace to the existing bowman army.

Nothing

Turn 5: 500 AD

The ACs may have been broken, but there are a lot of Spanish swords, MDIs and archers turning up. Move the MDI that generated Cornwallis into Nelson's army. Retreat an AC with our MDI.

Pick up Theology from the Glib. Lose an exposed MDI to a Spanish MDI, our MDI takes an AC with him.

Turn 6: 510 AD

Nelson's army kills an MDI. Bombard some Spaniards.

Korea land an MDI by London.

Turn 7: 520 AD

The Korean MDI kills our attacking MDI. No other offensive units in the area, two pikeman protecting London though. Archer army kills two Bab bowman. MDI kills Arab spearman. Nelson's army kills a MDI.

Egypt starts KT. Korean MDI suicides on London, our pike promotes. Big stack of Spaniards outside Liverpool. Two archers, two swords, a warrior and an MDI. Three MDIs by York as well. Oh yeah, did i mention the Koreans? Three Longbows and two MDIs by the Pike army.

Turn 8: 530 AD

Liverpool and York stack bombarded nominally.
Nelson's army reduces the York stack by two MDIs.

Egyptians start KT. The Spanish, Arabian and Korean troops are being very annoying. They just keep walking towards our undefended cities and ignoring our border strongholds.

Turn 9: 540 AD

Stack approaching Oxford so i rush some walls.
Kill Arab archer and MDI. Nelson's army kills Spanish MDI.
Bombard Korean Longbows to full red.
Saltpeter hooked up next turn.

We lose one pike, but we kill one warrior, archer and two MDIs.

Turn 10: 550 AD

Saltpeter online.
Nelson's army kills an arab MDI.
Bombard the Korean stack. There are a lot of them !
MDI kills Arab spear and promotes. We get two slaves from the settler beneath.

Preturn:
I am going to use our cash to do some upgrades - start on the preturn.

Oblivion, A few very minor comments:
Its usually not a good idea to put workers to sleep (our automate) as the next player may not spot them.
The archer army had one attack left? Not sure why you didn't kill the MDI
Some towns were building pikes that had no barracks. I would build barracks first (I changed one town to Barracks, and one town to Trebuchets from Pikes).

Early: Mostly try to drive the units back out of our lands. The Koreans is a big stalemate as I can't kill many, but can bombard most away.
We get Education. Start up research.

Mid: Set up a line of units on the mountains. Don't have good places to settle yet.

Late: Things are more stable now, but we have a real dearth of units internally that we should address.

Note:
Finally things relaxed sufficiently to build a little Infrastructure again, but we are under heavy combat.

I had plans to settle 2 towns. I will try to include a map with where I thought they should go.

Thanks, i would usually wake up the workers but i must have just forgot. Glad you spotted them. Same with the Archer army. I think the pikes may have been a bit of a dramatic reaction to the Spanish threat through most of my turns.

From the picture, we have gained the high ground of the mountain that the Koreans were travelling, which is good. The musket wall is a good idea. Do we have roads under all the tiles the muskets are on? Might be a good idea so we can get artillery and attacking units up there quickly to reinforce.

Overall not much happened. Killed a bunch lost a couple. Seeing lots of MI now. It would be nice to get an army pillaging in the south. Those horses are so near, yet so far.

IBT
Egypt completes Leo.
Spain builds Sun Tzu
Acav gets a face full of our Musket.

Turn 1 660
Swap York to library to push borders out.
Kill MI
Full strength MI loses to yellow lined MI. :gripe:
Found Reading
Kill an LB that had moved onto Greebley’s Hill and then move setter & escorts over there.

IBT
Musket on the volcano wins 3 on defense. Fortresses there would be nice.
Arabs build Knights Templar nearby in Kufah.
Kill 2 spears and harvest 2 slaves from Arabia.

Turn 2 670
Found Birmingham
Kill archer & LB @ Reading.
We are thin on attack troops.

IBT
London MI – MI
Nottingham – Aqueduct – MI
Hastings – Musket – Musket
Newcastle – MI – MI
Norwich – barracks – aqueduct

Turn 3 680
Kill some Koreans near Reading.

Turn 4 690
Kill 2 Acav & a couple of Koreans.
The stacks are getting pretty big from Korea since we are seeing recycled units that we bombed earlier that healed & returned. Lack of units to kill the units is a bit of a problem.
String of 6 of Babylonians headed to Warwick, so I have to keep some units there.

IBT
Arabs want to talk.
Warwick – treb – worker
Coventry – settler – treb

Turn 5 700
Kill 2 Korean LB
Shuffle units to protect London from 2 archers dropped off by Egypt.
Lose MI on attack.

Turn 6 710
Lose an elite MI to a wounded sword. :aargh:

IBT
London – MI – MI
Warwick – worker – treb
Newcastle – MI – MI

Turn 7 720
Everyone is sending MI now. Babylon, Spain, Arabs, Koreans. It’s all MI all the time.
We need to get out pillaging as soon as we have enough units to defend the two AI attack points, which are Reading in the South and York in the North.

IBT
Nottingham – MI – MI
Hastings – musket – musket
Canterbury – aqueduct – MI

Turn 730 Turn 8
Really think on troops here with lots of units to attack.
Since we have empty cities, red-lined AI units will not retreat, they just keep streaming in. It’s getting pretty crowed, and I’m having to use Muskets on attack against redlined AI’s.
No room fore error here.
Bummer, yellow spear defends against vet MI. That hurts.
Kill 3 Babylonians, that’s better.
Dial down slider, Chemistry will come this IBT.
5 MI and an Acav in the North.

IBT
Pike beats LB @ Birmingham.
Chemistry – Metallurgy
Liverpool – MI – Aqueduct (next turn Oxford completes it’s Duct and can go to Military production).

Turn 9 740
That went well. Killed 3 Koreans, 2 Babylonians & 2 Arabs. We are a little more balanced in our units versus the AI now.
Workers are headed towards Reading to build some roads to make shuffling units easier.

IBT
First Crusader appears.
Warwick – worker – treb
Dover – temple – Musket
Oxford – aqueduct - MI

Turn 10 750
Kill a few.

Notes:
The odds are a little better now. You can use the armies to attack the last unit, then retreat back to the city. This way we don’t have to fight recycled units.
Try to keep 2 library builds going at all times.
We really could use an army to pillage the south.
An occasional LB will come from Logrono to Birmingham. Send the MI healing in Dover to Birmingham after he heals.
There is a settler in Coventry. Perhaps 2 tiles due S of Coventry is a decent spot.
There are 2 workers putting down roads on the Musket wall. Only the Musket on the volcano ever got attacked.
conventry has a Babylonian problem, but the 3 MI in Coventry, plus archer armyyou can move over should handle it. Laying better roads between coventry and Reading will help here. Workers are in oplace to lay these roads.

Handy, I have never noticed empty cities keeping the AI from retreating unles they are very close. They always retreated for me the turn after being damaged.

Me too. It was the strangest thing. Perhaps it was because we had so many empty cities, and they were relatively close to the empty ones. It was redlined units that were not retreating.

I should have taken screen shots.
