Saw the headline flashing ("China banned game accused of distorting history") across the TV set during dinner; decided to check out which game...

I had thought it would be Vikky, or Civ3.

BEIJING : China has banned a Swedish-made computer game accused of "distorting history and damaging China's sovereignty," by showing Manchuria, Tibet and Xinjiang as independent nations, state press said.

The computer game, "Hearts of Iron", made by the Stockholm-based games developer Paradox Entertainment, also showed Taiwan as a part of Japan, Xinhua news agency said, citing a censorship committee under the Ministry of Culture.

"All these severely distort historical facts and violate China's gaming and Internet service regulations," the ministry said. "The game should be immediately prohibited."

All websites are banned from releasing the game and copies of the game on CD-ROM will be confiscated. Sellers will be punished, it said.

Internet bars that provide downloads of the game or fail to stop surfers who download, install or play the game, will be fined or even ordered to stop business, it said.

Earlier this year gaming regulators ordered all copies of a Norwegian-made computer game to be pulled off store shelves after alleging it "smeared" China's national image.

"Project IGI2: Covert Strike" was accused of blackening Beijing and the Chinese army's image by featuring a freelance mercenary stealing intelligence and conducting sabotage in China.

The mercenary fights in the game are across three linked campaigns in the former Soviet Union, Libya and China.

With the popularity of the Internet, computer games have become a booming industry in China.

In 2002, computer games pulled in earnings of 910 million yuan (110 million dollars), according to a report by state-run television station CCTV's website.

Analysts predict growth in the industry will be enormous with rising demand and the improvement of the broadband network and domestic game developers.

China's previous attempts to control burgeoning Internet use has been targeted at politically sensitive messages or essays in online discussions forums, websites and emails.

Oh dear and to think they are going against the mighty Paradox empire who are famous for making historically accurate games...

They're correct though. For that period, Xinjiang was run by a Muslim warlord as the 'Republic of Eastern Turkestan', Tibet was an independent nation, and Manchuria was Manchukuo - a puppet nation of Japan. And Taiwan a 30+ years old colony of Japan.

Some idiots in whatever Chinese ministry need to learn their history better, and/or learn to be more subjective.

Yeah I was guessing Paradox would be correct, just pointing out that they make historically accurate games... :p

I'm not, I missed out on the original Dell post! How will I go on! ;) Well, hopefully the US can be like China soon if Sen. Liberman has his way (cheap shot at Liberman, he is anti-game violence - man, I'd like to kill him! j/k  ).

HOI banned for showing tiles attacking each other? Official reason "People should not be able to watch tiles killing each other, watching the numbers decrease can be very disturbing..."

What are you talking about?

It was banned because it was showing Xinjiang, Tibet, Manchuria and Taiwan as independent nations... which did not fit the present political spectrum in Beijing.

Munzy related banning HOI to banning games for including too much violence, I was giving an example of why HOI might be banned for being too violent...

That's a Communist society for you.

No, it was banned since it would give Tibet, Xinjian, Manchuria, and Taiwan ideas of independence, if Taiwan doesn't already have ideas...

Exactly.;)

The only thing I find historically inaccurate about HoI is that Hitler doesn't kill himself ergo Germany doesn't give up once Berlin is taken.

We should mail the Chinese government a book about the history of WWII.

The reds were just upset that Mao was always getting his head kicked in by Chiang's forces in every game.

Indeed, HoI is an awesome game too... second only to Civ3 and at times better than it. Yet another move the Beijing government has made that in my mind is making me hate them more and more for their bull**** and tyrannical rule.

No clue what else they banned...but I'm sure there's a nice list to read somewhere.

I'm not too surprised....anything that doesn't fit their idea of China and the Party being supreme and with all the others under the Han majority...they'll censor it and ban it. I'm sure there will be attempts to get this game in there somehow...as usual.
