House of the Dragon (Season 1 of GoT-related series discussion)

If you know the story, then everyone has plot armour.
That's not plot armour though; plot armour is to be expected reasonably to die in situation x (like being attacked by 1000 enemies) and not die only because you aren't meant to. Compare with someone (in the same story) not dying because they actually do stuff not likely to lead them to death :D
PA is a literary bug, not a feature; only harms the system it's in, which wasn't the intention.

Spoiler :
I totally agree that the battle was stupid. Not only should he have died (and probably could be expected to after three torso arrow wounds before penicillin) but it was such a stupid plan. In GoT all the battles made sense at some level, but this really did not.

I liked episode 3 quite a lot more than episodes 1 & 2.

Spoiler :

King Viserys drunken spiral of uncertainty and regret was good drama. The actor playing the king impressed me a lot this episode. Also the 'hunt' was interesting world building because it's so different from what I think of as a hunt. Having a giant dinner party in the forest and after downing a bunch of wine, you go out and stab a tied down animal doesn't seem very sporting or skillful. But if you're the king of the most powerful nation in the world I guess you can do that and have everyone applaud you after the deed is done.

As for the Battle of the Stepstones, it was alright I guess. At least Daemon got injured by some arrows unlike Jon at the Battle of the Bastards.

Well Viserys is the king :p

But yeah I like Daemon and Rhaenyra, both characters and actors as well. The dynamic between the three of them is what is holding the show together for me.

I think the complaints about plot armor are pretty ridiculous. From my rudimentary knowledge of medieval ranged combat, archers did not usually aim at single targets with any reasonable expectation of hitting it. Arrows were fired en masse at a mass of troops so that they would probably hit someone. Trying to fire at a single target that is running across your field of vision seems like a tough thing to do with bows and arrows, and the Triarchy didn't seem to have enough archers to blanket the whole battlefield. Also, they did eventually hit him.

I think the battle sequence is fine. The Crabfeeder was sicking his men at Daemon several at a time while watching for the appearance of dragons, wary of a trap. It was when Daemon seemed trapped with no help coming that he got baited - a foolish mistake for sure, but not an implausible one. If anything, the siege was what didn't make as much sense. It looked like Crabfeeder didn't have enough soldiers to resist a storming with the cave entrances open like that, so I'm not sure how they lasted so long.

What I thought kind of did not add up was how did island based pirates with wooden boats fight a 2 year campaign against dragons?

What a great episode! The game gets real.

Spoiler :
All the plotting is now out in the open and all five sides (Viscerys, Rhaenyra, the Hand, Daemon and Lord Corlys Velaryon) are established and standing firmly on their own. I guess we'll see how long the Hand survives now that he is no longer the Hand.

After a slow start, episodes 3 & 4 have me hooked. I guess I'm a sucker for morally grey characters with multiple motivations.

House of the Softporn, a HBO original productions.

I thought this show was relatively tame compared to GoT.

I think Fippy meant that instead of interesting plot, you got soft porn - a bit like what that sand snake said to Bron.
Well that's just like your opinion man. But I don't know why people would watch for the naked people scenes. I mean, I get people like looking at other naked people. But brothels and incest make me feel scuzzy.

 soso..i mean that was the first thing in my mind while watching.

Discussing program quality is uncomfy, if peoples are raving about something you can only lose with negative reviews.
So i'm just saying how this show uses very common methods, for me it's not something i look forward to..but an okay watch like several others. Lower expectations = more fun.

@BenitoChavez well it's their intention, i would include it in "common methods". However for me they are just 2 actors, so whatever.

Imo the plot is moved in some ways very fast (due to huge time gaps between episodes, unlike early GoT) and in other ways still allows for bad economy of time. Personally I found the episode boring and rather filler-like, maybe it would have worked better if this started (as in GoT) in medias res regarding the relationship between the two Targs (ala Cercei and Jaime)

You disliking a popular show is the most predictable and filler-like thing in this thread.

I thought episodes one and two were alright, but episodes three and four were bad. I caught up on the show today with my girlfriend and neither of us were impressed. Really lackluster nonsense. None of this is interesting.

Another excellent episode that jumps the story along. I like how they are focused on the story and not just "big events" and given how many different threads are involved, they are doing well.

Spoiler :
Lady Rhea was my favorite of the women characters so far! Alas, her time was too short. The wedding announcement feast had all the parties there and was ripe for action to close out the episode. I was surprised though by what happened.

Spoiler looking ahead :
It looks to me that season 1 will end when Viscerys dies in another 15 years. By then there will be a multitude of new kids and many of the current cast are dead and gone. For that to happen there will have to be more time jumps. The death of Viscerys though is the beginning of the struggle for the throne. It seems a good spot for season 1 to end.
