Houston 1836

I think Huston will be a better market for soccer than San Jose, though i think Chivas USA should have gone to San Diego rather than playing in the same stadium as the LA Galaxy(my fav team). As far as support goes, it is mostly grassroots, and the same goes for USL, only more so. Fox Soccer Channel is undoubtedly the best place to go if you like soccer in the States, and they show a lot of games from both leauges, and college.

AS far as quality players go, we are producing some now. Notably Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, Brian McBride, and Brad Fiedel are all MLS products, along with many others. Goalkeepers seem to be what we are good at though. Fiedel, Keller, Howard, Hartman. we have some world class keppers, it the out field that needs to get better, which it is.

Whats happening with with Freddy Adu lately? Is he still following the predictions that football manager made about his skills?

No idea what Manager predicted, but he's been working out with the USMNT and appeared in a recent freindly (v. Canada?). I don't really follow his team (DC United) but I would guess he's expected to step up and be a full time starter this season.

He was basically premiership quality after a season and turned into a 10 million plus player in terms of potential transfer fees.

well, DC United have his contract untill he turns 18, which is still very voung, but that would be his what, 3rd or 4th season? He shows sparks of talent when he does play, but he needs to get consistent. The other thing he needs is playing time, consistently. Htis becomes a problem, because DC's squad is very deep for MLS, and there are a few other players ahead of him in the pecking order, like Jaime Moreno.

Yeah, 1836 got '86ed.

I had been hearing about this for some time, and a lot of theHuston fans are now upset that they are changing the name. I had heard that Huston '06 was a possibility.

Lonestar is a pretty bad name. If they added an s on to the end to make it Lonestars, it would be much better.

plural Lone? come on, thats just silly. Besides, It should be something that represents Huston, not just a genaric texas name.

1836 is history in Houston; Dynamo it is

Houston 1836 is no more.

Nearly one month after the embattled franchise chose to withdraw their first choice of name after outcry from some in the Hispanic community, the team unveiled their new name in Houston on Monday: the former San Jose Earthquakes will henceforth be known as the Houston Dynamo.

The name was chosen to reflect the city's status as the de-facto energy capital of America. GM Oliver Luck said in a statement that "Dynamo is a word to describe someone who never fatigues, never gives up. The new name is symbolic of Houston as an energetic, hard-working, risk-taking kind of town.

"Finally, we'd like to once again reiterate that at no time did MLS or AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group) ever want to offend any members of the community in Houston. We want everyone to feel welcome and become a part of professional soccer in Houston. Similar to soccer around the world and in our other MLS markets, the sport embraces all cultures and unites the community."

Houston Dynamo spokeswoman Vanessa Astros added, "We had very little time to conduct polls and collect information — and by us I mean our owners AEG, MLS and team officials. We look at a group of different names over the past few weeks, and in studying them and checking on trademarks, we found that some of the names we would have chosen were already registered, so we looked at Dynamo. For us, it symbolizes the energy of the team and the coach.

"Also, in 1984, we found out about a team called the Houston Dynamos which played here, and we wanted to pay tribute to it."

The MISL Houston Dynamos were in existence from 1984-86 and folded due to lack of support.

The name, of course, has another long-standing meaning for European football fans: In Soviet times, the name "Dynamo" was given to teams fielded by police and secret police departments. Dinamo Bucharest was formed in 1948 by the government to represent the police force; Dynamo Berlin were sponsored by the hated Stasi of East Germany.

In choosing the name, MLS has chosen to placate the Hispanic fans who were understandably upset with the choice of 1836 for a nickname — the year represents not only the date of the city of Houston's founding but of Texas' secession from Mexico. A number of Latinos across the spectrum saw the choice as being in poor taste.

But Houston and MLS officials will now have to contend with some blowback from some that see the name controversy as a case of "political correctness" run amok. One AEG staffer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that that was a huge concern for the league during discussions on the team's future.

MLS officials were not immediately available to comment.

In Houston, the team will play its first three seasons in 32,000-seat Robertson Stadium, home of the University of Houston football team. Luck, a former quarterback with the Houston Oilers, has been seeking corporate sponsors to help build a soccer-only stadium.

Hispanic soccer fans have flocked to Reliant Stadium in recent years for international matches involving mainly Mexican teams. An Interliga doubleheader in January drew a crowd of 25,000.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Decent name, better than some others they could have come up with. I still would have liked to see Houston 06 though.,

I think it's silly that "1836" offended so many people though.

Dynamo...meh...it's a team name that needed a long explination...is that all that great?

1836 would have been one of the stupidest names in pro sports. I like this one much better

Usually teams use the date of when the team was founded rather than the city.

Agreed, but how is "1836" offensive? Do people in the UK get offended when they hear of the Philly basketball team?

People get offended all the time for stupid reasons. At least, it makes more sense for Mexicans and American-Mexicans to be offended by 1836 than it does to be offended by a nipple during the Super Bowl. But only slightly so. Because, let's face it: people get offended all the time. Muslims are offended by the cartoons, Fundamentalist Christians by the notion that homosexuals might want to marry legally, etc....

Chill pill, people. People, chill pill.
