How about this variant?

Feudalism would probably be a very good option for this variant, since you are spreading out very fast, and have lots of units and lots of recently founded and/or conquered towns all the time. Even though I'm playing an agricultural civ in my game, only a few cities have grown above size 6, and I'm close to the end of the game now.

One thing that I didn't mention in my last post is that corruption and waste is a real pain with lots of cities but no FP. That was expected, but since I'm used to republic, which has less corruption, it was even worse than I expected.

My Greeks just took over 66% of the land mass on the planet. I posted a screenie in Interesting Screen Shots about the vast Mayan Empire.

I was a little more lax in my rules and it never occured to me that the FP would be off the table. That is like playing the game without the Palace. Oh well.

One incredibly funny bit that did happen. I got a culture flip from the Hittites. it was way out in no man's land and they flipped. I have nothing to attract a city so it says a great deal about the Hittites that I could beat them on it.

The simple fact of the matter is that this variant really means you just have to go to war. As I said before; the sheer boredom is enough to make you cranky anyway. I should have finished this by 100 AD but I messed around and did not start the wars when they were very winnable.

The last war was started when the Mayans sent one, yes o-n-e, cavalry towards my land. I saw the cav coming and you know what is coming, so I blocked entry to my land. They had to declare from Babylonian land and of course I brought the Babs into the war.

If I were to do it again, I would go to war much earlier. There was an early Hittite war and I should have finished them then. When will I ever learn... (((sigh)))

Well it was a domination win which is fine.

Feudalism for the win. Getting crowded? About to lose unit support? Whip a settler.

I was assuming that you would capture most of your cities, so you would likely end up with alot of cities with aqueducts in place.

On the culture flips, the best idea might be to raze capital cities on priciple to avoid the whole issue.

I've finished this one now. Domination in 610 AD. Not an ideal world to live in, if you look at the demographics. Obviously you get a nice score from winning early, as this was my second best score ever, and it's only Monarch on a tiny map. (Don't know if map size matters for the score, but difficulty level certainly seems to do.)

You're right about razing. Even if I don't like to do that, it's probably necessary in this kind of game.

The best thing I did in my game was to switch to Monarchy. Should have thought of that sooner but Republic is just too ingrained in my thinking by now.

Logans Run? Ocampa? 1 child and a 20 year lifespan is very improbable, like science fictional. And I love the literacy level:lol:

Cookies if you can guess the second reference. (Ocampa)

I think the Ocampa are a Star trek reference.

Oh yeah that was the world at the beginning of Voyager. Loved that show but Kes sure went wacky in a hurry.

That was one of the biggest botches they made with Voyager, the unceremonious dumping of Kes and fast replacement by Seven of Nine. It was so sudden you could practically hear the gears grind. Voyager is still my favorite Trek series, but Deep Space 9 is pretty good too.

Did you just say Voyager as your favorite Trek series Overseer? *Moves out of Ohio this very second*. To paraphrase someone once said to me... "we are Kazon, we have bad hair." I fully admit to watching almost all of the Voyager episodes, and I even happened to enjoy *some* of them here and there. The theme music for the show I thought quite good. But, overall well... Star Trek Voyager was to Star Trek series what the 6th doctor was to Doctor Who... utter rubbish.

Just my two cents though. Taste lies in the buds of the beholder and some people like kiwis better than nectarines.

Ocampa have a 9 year lifespan... it took me a while to remember that one.

I guess tastes vary, because Dr. Who never interested me at all, no matter who the Doctor was. The cheese factor is what got me, the worst cheese original trek had was better than anything Dr. Who offered. The new Who series at least has better looking girls, but that isn't enough for me. Back to Voyager, the Ocampa were a badly thought out species, being bisexual but only having 1 child ever seemed like a fast track to extinction. I will agree that the Kazon were also pretty bad, Klingons with very bad hair. If I had hair like that, I'd be cranky too.

True, we are bad. "Welcome to Sci-fi chat at 10, with our hosts Doug and Overseer, we'll take the first caller....."

Hmm, I prefer Deep Space Nine to Voyager, and liked the Enterprise show. However, I grew up with the original series. Dr. Who I enjoyed in very small doses. As for the original purpose of the thread, I am far too much of a builder to try out the variant.

I think this Variant will force builders to play aggresively, mainly because there is nothing to build

Under Ideal Conditions, the game would be finished in the BCs

But I greatly enjoy building things, like wonders and barracks and harbors and libraries. Especially ones that I have modded a bit.

I agree with this. i really should have been doing an AW or at least a NOW game. The problem was with the world on this one as it was a long string and getting to the Mayans in the last part was a challenge. The Babs had not completely roaded their land so even the ROP was slow.
It took 6 turns to get Cavs to the edge of the Mayan area... (the pic shows where the Babs end and the Mayans began) from that revised edge of my land.

The small white view box (right edge) does pretty much mark where the Arabs were located.

For the Hittite war, it took a long time to get my units up to their eastern tip for that war and then I had to bring all those units back to fight the Arabs. it took as much as 5-6 turns to get some units up there and then back.

I should have marked Athens location. if you can see the Y that is formed by some cities, Athens is the city where the forks of the Y come together and become the stem.

ok, fixed that
