How do I open a rar file?

Download WinRAR. I think 7-Zip (which is freeware) may be able to open them also.

you can also use WinACE

these are both compacted file formats, similar to a ZIP file.

Yes, 7-zip works, and is free, it's my archiving program of choice.

WinRAR works after 40 days. it just gives up an annoying pop-up reminder to register whenever you open it, but it quickly becomes habit to close right away.

I find that winrar and winace aren't all that different. I tired them and sometime winrar would be smaller then winace and vise versa. However most of the time it was only a few KB difference.

I would definatly go with winrar. look it up and give it a spin.
