How do I win this game? (Immortal)

@sampsa

I should play to see how it turns out, but city 2 on gold seems very costly in terms of development when the 3-pasture city is such a strong settler-worker factory.

Thanks it worked! Some observations and learning from your game. Interesting you went agriculture first. But makes lot of sense with the capital's placement. I get my 2nd city up pretty early but pattern is that 3rd and 4th ones are not quick enough (probably 5-6 as well). I just don't have a good feel for how quickly to go from 2->X. Maybe I will try some games to over expand/push myself and get a better feel for what works. You got gold as the 2nd city still nice. I love the idea of letting it stay at size 1 and focus work on other cities until granary. Seems you just hooked up gold at t63 but I imagine you must have mined it right after settling? I would not think to skip the road there but it makes sense as happiness/growth is not a concern yet. You have 5 workers and have 3 workers on wheat wow! I need to stop being allergic to workers.

Would you settle fur or wine next? What is the timing and plan? Also curious city placement for fur. I was thinking to settle on the river fur.

I would not settle fur in the short or medium term, one point of happiness is not worth an otherwise useless city this early in the game, especially since you'll have monarchy soon.

Yes I kind of wondered it myself what made me settle in that order, but it's not a huge difference anyway. I think there was some 8T gap between settling them.

Yes because it's a 4T faster worker, need to go agri first which is fine anyway.

In general, immediately. As long as you have enough safety your capital shouldn't grow but just go settler/worker. Chops are very important at this point and if you have a lot of forest you should have one guy chopping nonstop immediately at BW.

Yes, had worker ready to mine immediately upon settling. Built worker (one chop), then warriors, then worker. 4:hammers: so get the EXP bonus and 4T warriors are nice too.

Clam (wine). I wouldn't settle the fur spot.

I played again from T0 and tried applying the advice here. Got to a good spot 4th city settled before T60. Barb spear appeared north but otherwise things going smoothly. After playing through again your decisions make more sense like agri first is obvious :)

Now after writing I can't decide which direction to go. I'm thinking either construction/HA rush, or wait till trebs to attack (and quick follow up with knights to replace HAs), or just settle in for lib/cuirs?? Pangea has me inclined to wait for cuirs as it's annoying moving around a pangea with 1 movement units. How do you fit monarchy around this? Trade for it? I'm thinking alpha/currency from trades but AI doesn't give up monarchy as easily.

But there is also industrious marble thing. Find a way to spam national epic/parthenon/GL fail gold as well? Ugh, choices choices.

Yes, there are many ways you can play it. I think construction is certainly doable, aesth-line with marble+IND is strong etc. If you can't settle more than 5 good cities cuirs might be a bit iffy though (=go construction).

Yes, trade for monarchy usually. AI always gives up monarchy i.e. doesn't hold monopoly because monarchy doesn't unlock any unit or building.

LOL. This is prime example of how stupid AI can be. If anything, Monarchy is such a key tech. But of course, they can feel free to hoard and hold onto Theology and Divine Right for all I care.

Btw this old thread is pretty good and might be helpful for you. It's mostly about Mids+cuirs strategy but also about overall empire setup.

Early agriculture would give 40% discount on AH. If you settle on marble not too far away. I would need encouragement to settle in wasteland just for the fur. Unless happiness was a major issue.

You can rush with just HA. On a good map you could have it ready before 1000bc. Beeline HA. Maybe after writing pending on start.

For me, going writing before HBR would be an exception. It's often easier just to build cottages to get the needed :commerce:. Writing maybe if you are CRE (or perhaps PHI), otherwise with cottageable land it's not worth it.

Tecumseh, I've noticed you like to go writing. I think it's a decent tech because it leads to a lot of good stuff, but if you are not in a situation to put 90:hammers: to a library, consider if the tech itself is that useful. It's good for open borders (maybe to gain religion?), but on immortal the AI often get it for you.

Not at all related to your post, but is your user name (Tecumseh?) anywhere in the list of great people? I think a cosmetic mod that lets you choose great people from a nation or culture group would be great!

Yes I never really go writing before HA. I think it was a creative game I was remembering. Pottery and cottages yet as it speeds up city regrowth when whipping. Hopefully the OP will learn from all the advice here.

I don't know if he's there. But it is the name of my hometown :)
