How does 'restart' work?

Never blame him. He is kind enough, as it is, to come to this forum providing information. Appreciate that very much. I work in the software industry too, and I have more then once misinformed my clients :p

Yes, and this is the 1st time I can remember that Mike B. has been wrong about anything. He still has a pretty good batting average.

To come to Mikes defence here: I wouldn't be surprised when in a program as complex as Civ3 some things simply were debated so long that there is confusion now, or when some things were simply never thought of, and if Mike asks now: How does this work? he gets answers like: Oh, it is like that.... by people who belive it is that way, simply because the last time they can remember thinking about it is like 12 months ago!

So even if Mike was wrong on that issue: AFAIK-clarification from him is a lot better than silence!

Thank you, Mike!!!

you can't respawn (that is play on the same map, same positions and so on). You can only start a new game!

on topic: can anyone summarize on their experience with the respawn option?
- what's your conclusion - based on the facts from Mike B & your own experience?

not necessarily on topic:

why should the human respawn?
why should any civ respawn

- but if the ai is allowed to respawn (option turned on) why shouldn't the human?

for gameplay: respawn could be used for exploitation (AI exploited by the human...)

Sum up:

restarting AI get more untis than thought by most. They keep any units in the field, keep the accumulated culture, stay at war with you, get 100 gold for free. They emerge stronger, and since their cultural gravitiy center is shifted, this can have a very negative impact on human playing.

One additional point, respawning can bring that civ to be in contact with other civ. And that means more trading about AIs. One of my main consideration for not killing AI if I know it will respawn.

Good point about bringing them into contact with other civ(s) by respawning.
