I'm just curious. I've always thought that it was pronounced like the typical "aw" in a heavy New York accent, like:

I thøt dat de Jets will've gøtten deir arses kicked = I thought that the Jets will have gotten their arses kicked

Thøt = thawt

I realize that "aw" is not "ø", but "aw" is the typical representation of that New York vowel sound.

I think ø is pronouced sharper than aw, but Im not sure since I don't know the NY accent.

Think of ø as ö in german.

Edit:

å (Å) is pronouced like the beginning of "oh", just without the uww sound in the end and
æ (Æ) is pronouced the letter a in alien.

Huh???

The Norwegian letter Ø behaves much like the english U in "but". (The norwegian U takes the value of the oo in "boot".) "Aw" does not enter into it anywhere.

German ö, yes, pretty darn close that too.

No not like that, Professer Turnesol. Like in ökologisch or ökelname.

in yumbo yumbo, right?

i say its more like when butt-head used to think about something, you know?

he went: UUUUHHH... kinda like that

his UHHHHHs were usually followed by HUHUHUHUH HUH HUH UH HUH HUH HUH

damn i miss beavis and butthead :(

In walloon, the sound "å" exists around Liège. They pronounce it between french "a" and "au" :
råbèt = rabbit
måhone = home

In other areas, that sound doesn't exist. But the letter exists in "unified walloon". In my area, we prononouce it "â" or "aû". :crazyeye:
