Question to the people who voted to always settle in the spot they are in:

Do you restart if you start on a mountain/swamp?

I voted for one move but I rarely insta-restart any game. The most fun time of a civ game is the beginning when you are revealing the map, finding neighbors, establishing your base etc. I almost always will play at least the first 1000 to 2000 years to see what develops. Then I evaluate the situation for how much fun it looks. I don't have to be the most powerful or have a monster start to keep going but if I have few or no nearby neighbors, a massive jungle/swamp/desert/moutain range that makes growth near impossible, etc and just doesn't look "fun", then I'll start over before investing serious time in a game.

I generally settle where I am, unless I see a much better spot within a tile or two from where the settler is.

The only time that's happened was in my first Civ III game ever. Which I won despite my capital starting out in the middle of a mountain range. Not that it counts for much since it was on Cheiftain. :p

if i start in a swamp or on a mountain range that adds to the challenge and makes it MORE fun
