Inspired by a post over on the Macintosh Users arena regarding the worst change to Civ III being the loss of his menu bar clock...only to find himself quitting at 4am!

WHEN DO YOU PLAY AND FOR HOW LONG...

Any funny stories (i.e. falling asleep at your desk, playing until the sun comes up, etc.)

I've found that this game...more so than even Civ I, is as difficult of an addiction than anything else I've ever battled before (i.e. alcohol, chew, M*A*S*H re-runs, etc.). I've never found something like this that just takes any concept of time and space and virtually erases it...unbelievable

I've often wondered...how do we know that the boys at Firaxis aren't up to something diabolical like hypnotizing those of us who find ourselves "waking" from playing at 3am to go to bed . Maybe we've fallen under the spell and are running around during the five or six hours we "lose time" playing the game, just to do their evil bidding! I can see thousands of us running loose at odd hours of the night, causing all sorts of mischief:mischief:

yes, I have a problem!! I am a civaholic :help:

But you have to admit, it makes some sense on a very subconscious level! :hmm:

Let us come together and support one another as we battle the evil masters at Firaxis for our very souls!:saiyan:

The other day, I cooked up a nice chicken stew, and we ate, and then I sat down to play Civ 3 while my fiancee sat and read. After what didn't seem to be *that* long (I'd only just discovered Currency, for heaven's sake!) she asked me what I was going to do about the stew now that it was probably bad. I told her I was going to put it in the fridge, and should be fine since it had only been sitting out for 40 minutes.

It had been 3 hours.

This is a powerful medicine.

Sounds like it should be an AA meeting. :D

Hi.

My name is Padma. And I'm a Civaholic.

Edit: While I'm kidding about the AA part (a little), there is a good deal of truth to it. Between Civ3, and CFC, I am totally addicted. I play and post when I am at home, and I post when I am at work. If it weren't for needs of my family, I would probably spend 24/7 at the computer! :)

But you

It doesn't have to be that way. Help is available. Ever since Joan and I have been attending therapy, we have been doing much better and Civ no longer controls our lives. Tell them Joan.

on a good day i can play well over 10 hours of it, hell i compleated GOTM 15 in 3 days......COME ON FEB!!!!!! :(

most sittings are 4 hours tho....

most games ill be sitting there, then i would look at the clock expecting 2 hours more gaming to be "available" and it would be 4:45am :crazyeye:

OMG Padma, I thought you were ME for a second! I do most of my posting at work, some at home, and most of my playing when I can get away with it. . . on a really good day, I'll get up a couple of hours before everyone else, and have some solid time to get Civ3 in, and then another four or five hours until my wife gets up. This only happens once a week, if I'm lucky.

As it is now, I get three good hours a Sunday when she's in church, and on Saturday mornings, she has class at the community college. I work Friday nights until midnight, so I don't get up too early on Saturday. . . But now it seems the most I can get in is an hour or two.

I work forty hours in three in a half days, which is real hell for half the week. Then again, my weekend is 86 hours long! Those hours only go to sleep and Civ.

I don't count eating because my keyboard makes an excellent plate. Hygiene? No problem, I have a waterproof laptop designed for the navy so I can play in the shower...

I voted for 1-2 hrs, and I'd play more, except that's how long my break between classes is. Did manage a 14 hour marathon without missing a thing once. (went to the fridge and the can during the AI's thinking phase)

1-2 hours is what I voted.

Sometimes it may be more. The funniest city I have to procure is my sessions. I am usually trying to do my school homework at the same time. The computer desk is right next to my regular desk. Because of size, it's a bit awakard to get in and out. It requires to use the desk and compuer chair to get out.

Sometimes my mom will unexpectedly go up the stairs so I'll have to jump to get out and to quickly look like I'm working. In his particular case there was a binder on the landing pad part, and I somewhat hurt my arm while jumping off and out. :( My shoulder was hurting a lot.

It worked that time :)

I think we should have another poll!

What sound is most likely to cause you to immediately quit your Civ session?

1) Garbage truck stopping at your house
2) Spouse's alarm clock going off
3) Smoke detector from burning dinner
4) Paperboy arriving
5) "Are you STILL playing that d**n game?"

dcaint, I'm voting for 4) myself. That or seeing the first rays of sunlight coming thru the window. And when it's winter, that could be nearly 7am in the morning ....

I voted 1-2 hours, because that's the way it is now. When I first got the game, I had a couple of 'Oh crap! Is that the time?' moments.

Civ III is the reason my anti-virus is now autoscheduled for 3 AM (it used to be 2 AM). I have on occasion, still seen it pop up out of nowhere.

I'd have to say 2. I'm trying to steer my wife towards she gets the TV I get the puter. . . not quite there yet.

yeah i love that... always *****ing that you play the PC too much, yet all they do all night is watch TV!

Exactly! And you're supposed to sit there, contently, next to them, while they watch their shows! :vomit:

Another option to that unofficial poll up there:

The threat of losing computer privledges
Sharp nagging from mother/girlfriend/wife
