How many Ai civs do you play against?

Standard (8) because it's the most balanced in gameplay and it doesn't slow my computer down too bad in the late game. Smaller maps feel like I'm cheating a bit. Larger maps are just horrible for domination, religious, and diplomatic victories and slow my computer down to a crawl. Standard provides a good middle of the road balance to it all.

Usually the standard 7, sometimes more if I'm playing a larger map. Smaller games just don't feel like Civ.

21 opponent on huge Terra looks nicest (not in every game, but often). Never choose: it's interesting gamble if Maori is in the mix or not.

With largest earth dead, I’ve been playing enormous, about 18-20 civs. I agree, random opponents can be fun.

But... I think I prefer picking. I tend to prefer a certain uniformity - like all ancient, or all modern.

Wish they would have different leader outfits by age.

Nowadays Huge Earth with 38 civs... Marathon, No religious victory, all opponents picked by one by one. But as i read above random opponents could be fun, so next time try it.

If not playing real earth, mostly huge Pangea with 12-16 civs.

Mainly huge maps, so almost never less then 11, sometimes up to 13. Number of CS the standard of 150% of the civs.

Small map, 6 total Civ’s. I almost always reduce the number of CS by 2-3 just to keep things from scaling out of hand- the time it takes to finish a game is way shorter the more CS there are. It also helps make sure I have some breathing room around my capital.

I usually play a normal size map and cut the number of AIs from 7 to 6, to give a little more wiggling space for expansion and grabbing a religion. I also reduce the number of city states from 12 to 9 or 10.

I always play Huge (YAMP) with 12 sometimes 14 civs.I cut down the city states from 22 to 14 or15. Epic speed, sparse resources.

Current game I am playing the new Bolivia. If not nerfed this will be my go to civ. The speed bonus is OP as hell.

Usually standard or small size map with one more than the default number of civs. Even with that I still find there's plenty of space to build up on most maps.

I always play standard size maps. Continents/Small continents are my favored. Every option ( disasters, CS, etc. ) is not changed with single exception - number of AI civilizations is increased by 3. ( so total 11 civs on map, including me ).

I usually play with the standard number of civs per map type; +/-1.

I have recently started always selecting AI opponents though, since Firaxis refuses to implement a simple "available as random opponent?" radial button on each leader...

I have found that certain AI civs just destroy immersion for me, so I use a d30 to pick my "random" opponents; but more often I will just pick who I want in my game.

I also usually have the number of city states = number of civs(+2)

Always ‘Standard’ map size with everything on default.

First of all, I believe this is, how the game and the numbers were balanced by the devs.
Secondly, I feel this is my personal optimum for the game duration as well. Not too quick, not to drawn-out.

I started to choose civs who are most likely to give me a challenge. Civs who focus on science and production. My pick: Germany, America, nubia, maya, Rome, Kongo, mapuche, Korea. I play large continents & islands most of the times

Edit: and Grand Colombia, of course, as they were the first civ I ve seen wiping out another civ

I like to play huge maps with 10 AI. I play for mostly Domination Victory. After I pick my Civ to play with I like to pick the AI Civs that are most militaristic and aggressive to play against.

Used to play larger maps in Civ 5, have been tending towards standard or smaller in Civ 6. District management gets tedious with too many cities and I usually don't finish my games when playing big maps.

I go to random.org to randomise the Civ I'm playing with.
