How many GB do you think the D/L of this game will be?

I usually download at 1,3 mb/s from Steam, Civ5 download size will probably be ~5gb, so I guess it will take about an hour if you have a decent connection.

I am not that familiar with steam, but I would assume those people in charge over there, would know how big this game is, and allow for downloads to start maybe a week before release, then just release the unlock/activation, which could be a small file only.

Being familiar with Steam, I can assure you that it's not going to work like that. The game will be downloadable only from release day, therefore from 21th Sep midnight on US and from 24th Sep midnight for the rest of the world.

However I know they had pretty bad experiences in the past for mass downloading on release day and it looks like they've learned the lesson (most of my latest downloads were on full speed on release day).

Recommended and required HDD space for the game is 8GB... so that's what it will most likely be, eh?

Steam doesn't download installers or packed files afaik, it just grabs the whole thing.

That's what I know also. As far as I can recall I never noticed Steam needs to unpack files after a download. It looks to me that Steam "install on the fly", meaning it grabs files as ready installed. Therefore I think that the download size will be around 8GB...

I wonder this - I expect soundtrack and video from Deluxe edition to be 1-2 GB. Does this included in 8 GB required?

The 8GB will also include the cache files and temporary runtime files created. So the DL from Steam will definitely NOT be the same. ;)

However not forgetting Steam has the capability to let you pre download the game which then stays 'locked' until release.

so long as you have your code in advance you should be able to type it into steam and get all the downloading done before release.

not confirmed but it'd be pretty short sighted of them not to do the same for this game (otherwise it doesn't matter what your connection speed is, everyone will be throtteled by how fast Steam can upload it to the whole world simultaneously rather than spread the load over the preceeding few days)

I am thinking of getting it from steam on the 24th, since I live in europe. Would all of you be so kind and not connect to the steam on the 24-25th, so I can get my version downloaded without interuptions? :D :D :D

I really hope Steam lets me download the game before release. Otherwise it might take a week for me to get the game from Amazon.

Hopefully, fewer than twelve hours for download. I figure if I begin the download at around 7 AM, I should be able to play the game at the end of the work day, around 5 PM...

meh, you people with your antique net connections -downloaded alot of games from steam over my time and 4-5GB typically takes me little over an hour on my 12 Meg ADSL2+ ....get off those free crappy 512k ones :p

....now all i need do is work out if buying from direct2drive is as straightforward as they email me a code and i just tap it into steam or do they try to do anything 'clever' meaning i need to download stuff directly from D2D... might need to forgoe the free stuff if ther do :/

I googled that same question about d2d, and came up with two seperate cases. In one case d2d gave you the key, and you entered it and downloaded from steam. In the other case you download an installer that included steam, and installed the game(and steam if you didn't have it yet). Let's hope it's just the key for this game!

Well just placed my Direct2 Drive order and can confirm you get the following

-nothing

Basically you get a picture of a disabled button saying 'pre order' where the download key button should be on a released game. I guess despite the game being steam locked D2D are planning to keep all the keys until release date so no even associating your purchase with steam acccount until then and hence no pre-download prior to release....

....guess thats why they're giving away the extra free DLC stuff :/

(will email D2D CS to confirm, otherwise just need to make sure I persuade someone I know to order direct from steam, they can then predownload and I'll grab a copy of the game files from them ready for release.)

Ya, I preordered from them too, and on one of the account pages(I think, atleast somewhere I read it) it says that the game or keys will be available on release day. On d2d it says September 21st at 10 a.m. pst, lets hope we dont have to wait till 10 pst, thats 1 p.m. on the east coast, where I live! Please post D2D's response from your email! Ive tried googling more to find any cases of this for other games, but have come up empty handed.

I believe you can do both.

They'll give you the key, and a download, and you can choose to download, install, and enter the key, or just enter the key and download on Steam.

A pre-load would be nice, they did that for Mass Effect 2.

who D2D or Steam?

Steam tend to always to preloads but if D2D are going to sit on the keys we'll be the only ones not getting one :/

Ya, Id really like some official clarification on this. If steam does do a preload I'll feel paranoid that my download will take forever on release, and also a little upset that I cant participate. Then again if everyone preloads on steam, D2D owners will hopefully be the only ones downloading on release day. Plus the whole release being on the 21st in NA and the 24th every where else, so not everyone will be downloading at the same time. I have a good connection to use, so Im not that worried...I just want to play ASAP, ya know?

I'd also much rather get a Steam key, than download an installer from D2D. God damn I CAN NOT WAIT!!!!!!! This game gives me goose bumps!!!!

No, I doubt it will as you still have to connect to steam to activate the game. Gonna be a bucking nightmare for a few days. All massive game releases are on Steam.
I made the mistake of ordering empire: total war on release day, and while that game had a ton of issues, activating the game on release day was not one of them. That was pretty smooth.

We may very well be fine for the release of civ 5. I expect no trouble activating it.

well the official answer is in from D2D...... apparently the official line is they haven't a clue whats going on

Thank you for contacting Direct2Drive Support.

Unfortunately, Customer Support does not currently have any information in regards to when the keys for Civilization V will be released. Once they are available, your account page will be updated to reflect the change, so please check back often!

-will get my housemate to order his copy direct from Steam and see how that goes.... if going that route gets a pre-download I'll get back to harassing D2D to get their act together (perhaps pointing out the good few thousand views this thread is gettiing and how many sales they might lose going from 'clearly the best value place to get it' to 'likely to have serious problems delivering the goods')

....Personally I wasn't aware D2D had changed their business model from "get the game quickly as a direct download" to "we'll offer it cheaper than anyone else 'cause you're going to be the last people ordering it to actually get your goods" :p

Steam will more than likely provide a pre-download, it's easier on their servers if the downloads are spread out over a few day rather than everyone trying to download in the same 24 hours window.

They do pre-downloads for almost all their releases that can be pre-purchased, I don't see Civ being different.

And to answer OPs question, I think about 6.5GB personally. the 8GB requirement being more of a safe answer to facilitate install space. I'm not concerned, I have 3TB of hard drive space.

Thank you Jasx for your investigative work. I am in the same position and the best I could find on the site is 10 AM PST. I am MST, so it will be 11:00 on my birthday. I had better see game long before I see cake! Race you to the Download button!

But I would love a preload, I really would. Impatient folk aren't we?
