How many people choose their civ by random?

It really depends...I think to some people, choice of civ is "part of the game". I.e. choosing which civ is the first strategic decision you make. To others, it's part of the game parameters.

I usually play different scenarios, and try to play a civ that's suitable for my scenario, but keeping the scenarios varied so I don't play the same civ all the time. E.g. I would play the Vikings on an archipelago, but not on pangaea.

I like redeeming civilizations, traits, and units that others consider poor, although some I genuinely think are poor and are beyond redemption. (e.g. F15, Man-o-war).

I can sympathize with your 'needing' an industrious civ to play with. I myself have become spoiled by scientific civs, and find it a serious setback not having that free tech advance at the beginning of each era.

As far as which to play with, I just play w/whoever I feel like playing with. I do however, always choose random for everything else, on standard maps.

Also, regarding your comments on well-roundedness- I never realized how powerful pure culture could be until I played as Babylon. I was capturing cities left and right by flipping them. I wouldn't have found that out had I kept choosing the Persians and Ottomans ;D

skorn, I know what you mean. For the longest time, I played exclusively as the Babylonians. It got to the point where I had darn near memorized the list of city names and leader names. Just to make it fun for myself, I would play on really really huge maps (like a 200x200 map of Europe) and disable culture victory.

Recently, I have come to like the Persians. Their two traits are really nice to have. The UU is also far superior to that of the Babylonians.

One thing I've always wanted is the ability to gain the civ specific trait of a conquered opponent. Say that you are the Persians (Ind, Sci) and conquer the Greeks (Sci, Com). If I had my druthers, you would then be the Persians (Ind, Sci, Com).

my fav is the french i choose them most bus sometimes i go random. the french may have a not so good UU but theyre specific abilities are great. i know carthage is the same abilities but they can get an early golden age which is crap
