How much production?

My question is simple (or is it? :shifty:), how much production is enough for my cities? I realize it really depends on the city. So, how much will I need in the ancient age for my production cities and commerce cities? Medieval? Industrial and Modern? Thanks for your help.

In the modern era, my production centers are normally bringing in 60 or so base hammers per turn. That usually requires flipping into State Property, although in BTS you may be able to get close to that with a Levee and lots of river. Roughly speaking, 3 hammers per pop point.

In the Ancient Era, you may be able to reach that level, but with a much lower population. For example, if you have irrigated corn (6F), then you can feed 6 grassland mines, which would get you to 19 base hammers per turn. The hard part, of course, is finding the terrain you need to pull this off.

If you are planning a primarily peaceful approach through the early eras, I'd say that you should be able to meet your military needs with a single city that brings in 15-20 base hammers.

For non production cities, I figure you need to have 8 hammers per turn available when you are building infrastructure, but probably not much more than that.

So, I should be fine on production throughout the game as long as I have a base of 19 hammers per turn for my military cities and a base of 8 hammers per turn for my commerce cities (both types of cities with production enhancing buildings of course)?

I think if you can pull off 20 base :hammers: in the Ancient/Medieval/Classical era (especially if only off of mines, quarries and pastures with a pop 10-ish city), then you have basis for a great long-term production city.

However, beginning in the Industrial era, you can utilize corporations (chiefly Sid's Sushi & Mining, Inc.) and the CS+SP synergy to convert almost any plot of land into a great industrial zone.

Otherwise, I'll second VoU ... I usually aim for 8-12 :hammers: in my non-production cities.
