How to bypass the stupid launcher

Interesting, the Mac version of 6 - and 5 - has always had a launcher. I didn't realize the windows version didn't.

I don't see it as odd - though I understand why you might think it is. Throughout my day to day life I am bombarded by advertising and marketing which neither interests or attracts me. Often it is ugly. It is rarely entertaining. Outside of my home I have very little control over it - it is everywhere I look. Personally (and I admit this is a personal thing) it is a symptom of one of the very worst aspects of late twentieth / early twenty first century Western society. In my own home, I can choose not to encounter it. I can use adblocks on my browser. I can avoid TV. And I used to be able to play games which launched without any surplus marketing bull. Unfortunately that is no longer the case. I encounter marketing launchers on most games I play (including ESO) and it annoys me. Sure, there are plenty of other far more horrific things happening in the world right now, ranging from multiple wars, to Brexit to global warming. But in a way, this all-pervasive marketing stream is for me just a symptom of the dysfunctions that create the larger issues. I don't like them doing it.
Bottom line, like someone up the thread mentioned -I've paid for the game. I didn't give them permission to market to me. I don't want to see their marketing. End of story. So I'm very happy the OP made this post and I will get to launch the game without it.

And there I thought I'd spare you people my usual anti advertisement rant... :p
But yeah, what he said.

I have a weird glitch that doesn't show me ads. I'm not sure what I did, but I didn't know there were ads.

Yeah all I see are links to the Civ intro videos.
That's all I ever see too. But, there could actually be ads there and I just never noticed them. I've gotten pretty good at tuning out ads over the years. :)

What an odd, tiny thing for people to get upset about.

First world problems.

I like the updated launcher in that I don't have to choose which Direct X version anymore. So that's a welcome relief. It's prettier as well. Problem is it takes so long to come up compared to the old launcher. I would have no problem with this launcher if it was as fast as the old one.

Now I often forget about it, go back to my browser, and 5 minutes later wonder why my game never came up only to see the launcher still there.

I don't understand some people and their reactions to a simple hack that helps those who do not want to see anything but the game itself. The launcher is, to me, an unwanted distraction and a waste of time, that also happens to be annoying. The "ads" are the links to the new product; we have enough exposure to it everywhere here. Nonetheless, I accept the possibility that for some people, it's not an issue.

What I don't understand is what are those people doing here. I purposely created an "irritant" title to the thread so that only people that, like me, think the launcher is "stupid" would be attracted to it, and obviously, find the trick helpful.

The other's, I don't know... what are you doing here? Enjoy your launcher and get the heck out of here, please...

Launchers in general have limited utility, kind of annoying for all the games that have them in my mind. Not a huge deal, but somewhat annoying that someone out there puts even this garbage higher in their priority list for implementation/fixes than whether the game presents accurate information about its rules/outcomes of choices.

I appreciate having this hack. The launcher was annoying - not annoying enough to search out a solution to avoid it, but annoying enough that I'll gladly take someone else's fix.

*I should add, I only wish I knew if I should actually choose DX11 or DX12 when playing. Tried both in my game and can never actually figure out if one is better than the other.

Choosing an 'irritant' title probably did the opposite to what you intended. I asked what was wrong with the launcher purely because the thread title confused me, I thought maybe I had missed something. 'Bypassing the launcher for those that want to' may have lead to the same question but wouldn't have annoyed people who think it's ok. Creating a bypass for those that care is a great idea but you risk annoying people by using the word stupid in your title - this was clearly a deliberate choice so you can't really complain about the reaction.

I'm not complaining, I am asking them to leave... and I was not referring to your question, that was a legitimate reaction.

As far as I know, you wouldn't really see a "visual quality" difference, but you should see a difference in performance. So, if you have the choice and are seeing said performance boost (because DX12 has better rendering algos), you should use DX12 only.

Well fair enough, I guess my point was you invite them to enter by using a slightly provocative word in the title. :)

But as I said, finding and sharing a bypass is a great idea.

Launcher is great has the game not based on Steam or other platforms. Civ is based on Steam so i don't see much point in having a launcher, maybe if they add a button to continue latest save.

I've never seen any ads. The only thing showing was the civ intro and I turned that off by checking the box in options. Why are you guys getting ad?. What platform are you using? PCs?

Linux never had the launcher until now, and alas, it doesn't pass on launch parameters properly. I just edited the script to go direct to the game. problem solved. :)

There's a Steam Workshop mod that does the same thing - I believe it's called Quick Start

That's for the ingame start screen. This is for the launcher that appears before you launch the game.

Got it. My mistake. Made the change and i go directly to the game now. Nice! One click and I can finish making coffee.
