Hello.
So far I haven't been able to get any of the ancient or medieval wonders (except Newton's university) in my games. Without using the leader, that is, and without using the golden age's boost in production.
Any tips?

Choose an industrial civ or a religious civ. Egyptians is the best.
Only build one settler and build a city near by. then start building the wonder in the capital. The other city should only be used to crank out workers which you use first to build mines, then feed them into the capital to full maximum. boost luxuries. If you are extremely lucky you should be able to get the Pyramids. I think.

Those are two very good methods. Why not learn to use them? :D

But the best way is to capture them! ;)

I guess if you have a very nice start (cows and river) you can beeline for Literature and build the Great Library. Any other wonder is not worth the effort, and even the GL puts you so far behind in territory that I wouldn't recommend it.

Agreed on this strategy, but you have to keep in mind that you can safely do this as long as you don't have aggressive neighbors next to you, that will benefit from your weakness and send you Ad Patres... :)

In my current Deity game, i picked off my neighbors, weakenning them one after the other, generating the GL's i needed, hence building the Oracle, Sun Tzu and Lenny's workshop.
On top of that, i captured the Hanging Garens from my Zulu neighbor... That's how you can get Wonders too... If you can't build them, conquer them... ;)

When going for a wonder such as the Great Library or Great Lighthouse (G Lighthouse being much more important than anything else in some games), very early prebuilds are important. Not essential in all games, but they are in most.

If you start with alphabet (commercial), then go straight for a 40-turn writing. If the tech rate is high enough you can forget a 40-turn Literature or Map Making stint as the wonders may be gone by then. Normally, you can do a 40-turn research, and time your pre-build to coincide with getting the tech.

When other civs get the tech, you need to either be sure there are no wonder cascades happening by the AI, or you need to be ready to build it. On a fast-tech game you really need the prebuild done correctly, so you only have a few turns before triggering it. On a low-tech game, you normally have 20 or 30 turns before the AI can build the wonder, because they start from scratch and need 400*0.6=240 shields for the Great Library, and only 180 for the Great Lighthouse (IIRC, cos I'm at work).

If you don't have full contacts, remember that they may be building wonders without your knowledge, with a full set of contacts it is much easier.

But as others say, ancient wonders can be easily captured. Spending so much focus in the ancient era can hold you back. Personally, I tend to go for the Great Lighthouse when I am on an island, and I go for the Great Library usually when I an commercial or if I get an early free settler, to compensate for the production loss.

I kind of wonder of the benefit of a wonder on diety versus that hassle from other civs once you get the wonder. Expect to have other civs come by and hit you up for money quite often... Also, is building a wonder better than buid 1 or 2 more cities. Lets say you have 2 cities. If you dont get a wonder you can probably have 4 to 6 cities total on diety.... well maybe. =)
