How to leverage Imperialistic: I call it the "four one-pop cities strat"!

I don't think huts help on deity, the ai's usually get 99% of the huts anyway so its bound to help them more...

...and deity is for masochists anyway, jeez! Played a few more games of it--Its like, if the barbs want you dead, you're gonna die. Got attacked with 2 archers + a warrior at 2800 bc one game. what!!

I rolled another game where i was alone on an island with Montezuma and the only copper was right next to his capital. Uhh... help me here: Is there some way of not getting f***ed if you're alone on an island with montezuma?

I think I'm going to go back to immortal. I think its just a better experience overall, since a much wider variety of strategies work, pretty much every game is winnable even with poor rolls, and you're not so dependent on RNG.
While you can do pretty much anything and win on immortal don't underestimate how much you can fk around on deity as well. There's still a wide variety of strategies and once you master the difficulty level (and general civ 4 mechanics/efficiency) almost every game is winnable.

Now Nate starts to understand what me and Izuul were saying about Knights and Deity ;)

but they do work on deity.... we already established that.... lol... look at the game i linked in the other thread. you're obnoxious, you know that? ;)

I mostly need to figure out how to deal with barbs before I can progress any further... Do I just need to tech archery every game? or i could just build fogbusters until i'm paying for 3 a turn in unit costs...

I avoid archery if at all possible, but sometimes you may need it. (if find archers a bit annoying to deal with anyway since they are weak on attack and often barbs will just walk around them if in defensive positions) Fogbusters can do the trick in many situations, but I'm not sure your settings. Better to just keep barbs from appearing. If you are playing large/huge maps or certain map scripts, they can get much tricker. If you get a strat online early then there should be no issues at all.

Knights are very very limited on Deity. You are going for a tech the pretty much every AI will likely have before you do and you wasted beakers going for it. Knights at parity are lame.

Just a bit of fun, you were asking for that :)

Let's be helpful..besides fogbusting that Lymo mentioned (know the tile radius stuff?), Bronze solves barbs best. Axes can defeat everything they bring rather easily.
Archers can not, they are defensive and you can still be easily pillaged.
So Archery after trying BW, if no luck and you think they will be problematic.

If you are not on scripts like Pangea where AIs help covering barb troubled areas,
the great wall is really strong. Barb Spears appear quick in such games, and it's constant trouble when relying on chariots also.

You would need some testing how quick you can get tgw with different starts.
Let's say there's tundra on one side, areas too big for fogbusting and they can be really large on continents..building tgw is like getting out of war early.
If i tech mining, there's some time to decide if trying BW or masonry first for early hammers into tgw should work better.

I know how the tile radius stuff works... but does anyone know what year various barb types can start spawning on various difficulty levels?

maybe i should stop playing marathon continents....

i've seen the great wall go at 2800 bc. that's not reliable. Really, really hard to get before 2600 bc. I guess i could build the great wall, but then i've resigned myself to having a 30% chance of losing if i miss it...

bronze works, yeah, but you have some easily accessible bronze in maybe 60% of games.

really, i just need to suck it up and build like 4 warriors before my first settler to fogbust... but what if they get eaten by bears...

or i could try...

double worker start while teching bronze working... If there's copper nearby, build a settler and grab it and tech the wheel and chop 2 axemen asap. if there's no copper, build another worker while teching masonry... then just chop the great wall with one pop and 3 workers... probably get it around 2600bc.... but this only works if i have a bunch of forests. Would need at least 10 for sure....

aren't there supposedly people who beat deity like 50% of the time? So there really ought to be higher odds ways of doing this...

I know its different game and maybe not the same but.. Deity game with barbarians off I found most challenging, same time not frustrating (when you see 5 barbs archers coming but GW will be 1 turn too late even if AI won't build it). I had Deity game recently where I had chance to build early 12 cities with only 1 (starting) warrior total before I had to think about real defense (diplo safety reasons). And this gave me real chance to race against AI on techs (with no-tech trading option).
Maybe this is not the way for anyone or everyone but I found this style working best for me :) No barbs but no-tech trading too :D

If you find the upper levels easy, try K-mod.
