This is my start as Mansa Musa on Monarch. Its a Terra map with all normal settings.

I hate settling one tile from the coast, but I don't want to lose three river tiles and pick up three ocean tiles, especially being Financial. It's kind of hard to see, but there is a fish one tile north of the Warrior, too. HELP!

I would settle on the spot because you are on a plain hill.

When founding a city on a plain hill, you get an additionall hammer. This really helps in early game when you want to spread out real fast (I tend to go for plain hills even if I have to move my starting settler up to 3 turns to get there)

Settling on spot will be good for the short term, but if I go 1NW like Acidsatyr suggested, this city will be awesome once I get Beuracracy(sp?).

1SW is much better i think: no water tiles, which can't be improved, lots of river tiles, and also there is space for one more city (2E) to claim fish & ivory.

P.S.
sorry for my english)

yup, when going long term, go 1NW is much better for THIS city. But when settling on the spot, you will be able to bring out your next city (and everything you build) early in this game about 25% faster. This also helps a lot for later...

Both strategies (great capital) or faster early growth (not so great capital) may be good, so it´s up to you..

Man, now 1SW is looking really good too. The only thing about that is I don't get the fish right away. Working the fish is good for early teching with the 6F 3C after a work boat and being financial. OTOH, being on the river means earlier trade routes. All my tiles will be able to be improved, too. Gahh, I'm settling 1 SW. Thanks.

I guess 1 SW was the way to go...

I have a gold mine with the food resource to work it, in my capital and I'm Financial. This game is going to be easy, especially on Monarch.

good deal! i've learned the joy of gold resource when experimenting with financial leaders. and i just go crazy all game if i'm one square off the coast. makes me nuts (not that i'm not already).

Wow! I was going to say SW anyway, but with the gold that's a great start.

I would have gone Northwest. I hate cities with overlapping tiles. Just absolutely hate it. Sometimes it's necesarry, but I try to avoid it if it means 3 tiles are going to be shared.

I would have founded the city 1ne. The gold would have to wait for the second city but you'd get fish, corn, ivory and 3 hills.
For your first city food and production are more important than commerce.
Gold doesn't help you build settlers, workers or units,

PS: Can you post the BC4000 autosave ? I might give it a try.

Sorry, I already played this game and started a new one. It's cool that everyone had a different idea on how to play this though, especially because they all would have worked very well.
