I am very happy to see Mexico on base Humankind.
The design also seems solid and I understand the appeal of Soldaderas, but still I find the idea of have a unit from a civil war problematic. Like was said before Lanceros could have been the best way to represent the mexican military history having also a deep agrarian element associated to the Haciendas.

Love the art, remember me of the rural movies from the "Época de Oro del Cine Mexicano".

Just as a minor aside, but all cultures have a certain quote to them when you're picking.
For Mexicans, it's (for now, at least): "They tried to bury us. They didn't know we were seeds." Which is pretty neatly revolution-focused.

I would have guessed aesthete, but we do have two industrial ones already and it’s interesting to see agrarian gets a spot in industrial! Wonder if there will be an agrarian nation in modern, maybe China or India?

I like the artwork. Our first Spanish post-colonial nation in Humankind. Based on that image with the Industrial Islamic faction. I'm betting the Qajar are up next week.

To me the Lanceros coupled with the Hacienda would make it feel more like a Gran Colombian culture in design, even though it would be called Mexican. At least that's how I feel.
In that case I think the Soldaderas is fine.

Our first colonial culture in Humankind! And first time representation nonetheless!

About time as well, I hope that Civ takes some cues from Humankind, culture rooster of playable civs could so much more interesting.

well, all the things were expected ^^ Thanks to the buddy, here, which suggested the Soldaderas.

But it's so good to see Italian and Mexican, being for the first time in a 4X

I don't if that unit is so emblematic and recognizable, to me is similar to the Praetorian guard they really didn't see much combat, were mostly involved in cues, but boy are they emblematic of the Roman character, to me Soldaderas are that for Mexico. I'm really curious as what the role of the Soldaderas will be, from the description it does seem they will be a support unit with strong fighting capabilites, which is honestly spot on.

Haciendas, are a good one, I'm curious if it will have a cultural component as well, seeing as most haciendas nowdays are hotels and museums...or even a mix of all while still being active (Tequila producing Haciendas for example)

Honestly I'm so happy with the art and style of the Mexicans on Humankind, I'm so glad a French studio did it right seeing as we actually have a lot of common history. (even if part of it was trying to invade us, but we got along nice after that) ,if this was an American studio you bet Santa Anna would be the leader, with a Taqueria UI.

Vip teased us, apparently Soldaderas is not a simple replacement of a generic unit, but replace the generic partisan which is something else ;) Redacted feature, so we can't know more about that.
But seems more interesting than just an alternative unit of gunners with an ambusher skill or whatever

man tha'ts even better, love it!

My personnal expectation is than it is an unique replacement of Militia unit.
It was my expectation for French with the "Sans-culottes" of the artworks. So if someone else get this sort of gameplay, it's rather cool.

It definitely seems to me like, if the theme of the Early Modern Era was ascendant empires and the Imjin War, the theme of the Industrial Era is WWI and nationalism. A lot of the Industrial Era cultures either forged a national identity in the period, or struggled to contain them. And now we can have a World War I where not only are most European powers present, but the Zimmerman telegram was answered.

I didn't think of that! That makes the choice of cultures for industrial era even cooler.

I'd also like to add that the industrial era does cover napoleonic wars very well - we got French, British, Russians, "Austria" and "Prussia". None of 5 main characters is missing. So the industrial era is "napoleonic wars + ww1" while the modern era is "asian ww2 + cold war".

I think you nailed it in the head, in Mexican history terms, most of the XIX century was an absolute mess starting from independence, there was an American identity diferent from Spain, but it was so broad that It's no wonder Mexico was a civil war fest for most of the century,

It wasn't until after the reform war that a truly Mexican identity started to form, and I would argue it didn't coalesce until after the revolution, alongside with the rise of nationalism. So yeah, Agrarian, Haciendas and Soldaderas seems like a great fit.

EDIT: oh also, if any of you is interested in learning a bit more about Mexican history and the mexican revolution, the revolution's podcast has it and It's a great resource, one of the best I've seen on the matter.

I absolutely love this line of reasoning.

Although I would like to point out that the one who "actually answered" the Zimmerman telegram and involved in the WWI was USA rather than Mexico, and USA isn't an Industrial culture.

I honestly think the best way to think of the industrial and contemporary eras in humankind...is that they kinda sandwiched both World wars into one. right in between those eras.

some games it will feel more WW 1 and others more WW 2 depending of what cultures trascended. (with napoleonic and cold war on opposite extremes.) so it might not be so weird to have a situation with Germany, France, Mexico and the USA at the same time and still feel WW1 like.

Maybe sometimes it will feel like a big long Napoleonic era, and others like a ver early cold war.

Buenas noches :D

Very cool to have Mexico, the first time that I will play as it in an electronic game, since it will hardly be in Civ. Because of that, Mexico will possibly be the first industrial culture that I will choose when I have the game.

Considering they said Industrial only goes to the year 1920 in history I'm pretty sure we are going to get some WWII units in Contemporary such as probably a modern Japan EU at least.

After playing Civ I agree it is funny considering we have a separate era in between Industrial and Atomic, the Modern, which would be when both of the World Wars basically were fought, so it takes some time getting used to.
