Hey all. I've been out of the Civilization loop for a long time, but lately I've felt like playing these great games again.

I bought Civilization IV shortly after its original release, but never bought the expansions. I've looked at their various features (as well as their immense moddability) and think they're too good to pass on.

Should I buy Warlords and Beyond the Sword standalone, or is it better if I just buy Complete? Do I miss out on anything if I buy Complete, such as the original physical game manuals or any posters? I still have my Civ4 techtree poster, but maybe there's some other goodies from Warlords and BTS that I'm missing out on. I'm a stickler for "wholeness". :p

I'd also like to know of the Complete edition is simply a repackaging of all the original discs or if it's a totally different application that may have compatibility issues with older patches. Is this so?

Anybody willing to enlighten someone who hasn't played in a while, I thank you. :D

If you want both BtS and Warlords then buy complete if it's cheaper. Otherwise you really don't need Warlords because BtS includes everything that warlords had and a lot more. The only thing you would miss by skipping warlords a few of the special mods that come with Warlords.

Hrm, I didn't know BtS included the Warlords content!

You may want to still get Complete, because Warlords had some fantastic mods included with the game. IMO you should just get BtS though, as some of the Warlords mods have been converted to BtS.

Disagree, if you want mods, the publicly produced ones are of higher quality. There really is no logical reason to get warlords, unless you just want to support Fireaxis and give them more money.

Definatly get BtS though, it is well worth the money, and is probably one of the better XPs produced in the gaming industry period.

Complete retains all the original Warlords content, then? Is it a repackaging of Civ IV + each original release of the expansions or a modified application?

Civ Complete is one disc that includes three separate games: Vanilla Civ 4, Warlords, and BtS. You can play any of the three, and with complete you can download any freaking mod you want!!

No. Get Complete. Even if you don't like Col, Complete comes with it. That's a $40 value which is worth it for the scenarios and the whole extra game...

Considering you also get Colonization along with the two expansions, I'd say any sort of discussion on what to buy is purely academic. :D

Even so, I highly recommend getting Complete over standalone BTS for the Genghis Khan scenario alone. Not only is it one of the most polished and entertaining mods out there by any standard, but also affords a rare opportunity (as far as games go) to romp around central Asia. It's certainly my personal favorite. :)

Like my personal favorite:

:aargh:

Yeah, that's what i meant, because you said several have been converted, and that is an example.

Will Complete, since it's being advertised as DRM-free, not require the DVD in the drive? That would be a nice selling point.

I have the DVD case version of Complete and it has a 37 page manual and a tech chart. They are both rubbish in my opinion. What's in the manual won't be up to date in the latest patch and the tech chart looks completely different from the tech screen in game. It's from top to bottom for starters. So I would just not worry about whether you get those stuff or not.

talking about two different complete versions:
In Europe Complete was released last year, includes Civ4, Warlords, Bts and has a disk check
in the US Complete will be released tomorrow, includes, Civ4, Warlords, Bts and Colonization and does not have a disk check - and Take2 still claims that there is not going to be confusion about their naming policy :crazyeye:

By the way the US Complete is named Ultimate in Europe and was released last month (though it seems to have a disk check :crazyeye:).

Ori's post sums it up, Civ 4 AND Warlords AND BTS AND Colonization AND no Drm (or Disc Check).
for 40 bucks, as opposed to ~$20 for BTS (which has safedisc protection/disc required).

The no Drm or Disc Check was confirmed by Firaxian staff in another thread.
