Ok, I did win an immortal game straight up after about 6 tries.

But the next time out I didn't like the way it was going. I quit. And the next. And the next. And so on.

So I thought, okay, I am going to stop torturing myself. This is supposed to be fun. So I dropped down to emperor. And figured, lets set this up right. So I picked Darius to head up Spain. I liked his traits and I wanted to get a religion. Because I never have. And Spain has mystism and fishing. So, I think, with the financial trait I can get a clam and get to meditation first.

Well of course not. I rolled a start in the interior. Nothing to fish. But, I looked and I had a good spot, marble, a cow, a bunch of flood plains and right adjacent there was an oasis! Three food and three commerce. I figure, this I can do.

So off we go and I start scooting my scout and get some gold and I think, wait. I set this up with the box checked to get a new random seed. I can do better than this. This is supposed to be fun.

So I reloaded. And scooted the scout and reloaded. Rinse repeat. Ended up with about 600 gold and a free warrior and not one, or two, but three free techs. Sailing, masonry, and the wheel. No guilt. This is supposed to be fun.

But then I am looking around and I realize that I haven't run into any other civ. Not good. So I scoot my scout some more and sure enough, I am isolated on a smallish continent, the southern half of which is frozen tundra and ice. This is supposed to be fun?

Okay, I was about to quit but I think well, I can't. I cheated to get all that free tech. So I decide to keep going and see If I can get the religion first.

And I did. So I founded Christianity. And the because I had a cow, I researched animal husbandry while I trained a worker.

But when I got done with that I found that there are NO PONIES! Then while I was scanning to see if maybe there were some ponies I'd overlooked, I realized I had no luxury resources EITHER. Except one silver in the ice where no sane person would ever build a city......

This is supposed to be fun?

Well, lets take stock. I picked a civ with a unique unit, the conquistador to use to force convert the heathens, but no ponies for them to ride, and no heathens to convert even if they could.

And a unique building, the citadel, to defend against the enemies that I don't have either.

But I am not going to stop. Because after all, I have these three cheated techs and with tech brokering off I am not going to fall behind so fast anyway. One more turn.

And another and so on.

And then the barbarians come and I reload and reload and reload and they end up taking Madrid everytime anyway. Because I didn't build any defenders of course. Leaving me with a single warrior and a size one coastal city with no improved tiles and THREE FREE TECHS I cheated to get.

This is such fun.

what kind of cheats are there for civ and why you need that?
I suppose to win at highr difficulties. I never used any cheats in civ but civ4 is after Warlord to heavy for me, whereas civ5 is easier I can win at Prince level too without any cheat

I did not read all that, but if you beat the game on Immortal then you are not doing too bad. However, this post and most of your time would be better suited to the Strategy & Tips forum where you will actually learn to play better. (Same for you MajKira ;))

I used to be fairly picky about my territory, my civ and so on but now I am quite content with the maps rolled for me by Nobles Club or one of the other series in the strategy forum. Now it's not just me that doesn't have horses or stone when I want them but everyone is going through the same situation and now it's okay. Also instead of just being stuck and frustrated like this you can ask the advice of others. Maybe you get frustrated because you want your game to be perfect but that will never happen.

Unique units and wonders are fun that's just a small piece of the game. Playing a leader's traits are good but that doesn't mean you shouldn't focus on a mounted army just because you're Toku. Playing Toku can even be fun even though he's fairly awful. Wiser and more skilled people than me will say the best strategy is to play the map.

Wait, am I misunderstanding something? Or did you found Christianity before getting Animal Husbandry? Because... That's a pretty significant problem right there.

If I were you, I would say, scale it back a few difficulty levels. Prince or Noble, around there. There's no shame in lower difficulties, and if the game's difficult to the point of not being fun...

He went for a religion not as a normal strategy, but simply because he wanted to try it, which he had never done before.

Yeah, I understand that, but there's a difference between going for a religion, and researching Theology before you've got Animal Husbandry. I know it's not all that difficult to do (Pottery to Writing then Oracle that sucker) but you're often taking a non-trivial hit by getting AH that late, one that'll be a real challenge to recover from. If you want to found a religion, Taoism is generally your best bet. Heck, even a beeline to Monotheism has a shot at netting you Judaism.

Oracling/bulbing Theology is not a terrible idea by any means (in fact, if you're going for Religious Victory, it's basically your best choice) but you need to at least get the basics out of the way first. I suppose my point is that trying out abnormal strategies is all well and good, but you can't neglect the basics and then be surprised when you lose. No matter what you want to try and do, hooking up resources and getting basic infrastructure happening should always come first.

Unless he's playing with the "pick religions" option on, in which case I retract all this.

No, no, no.

I was playing with the "pick your own religion" box checked.

The Spanish didn't send out conquistadors to spread confusionism.

Anyway, I cheated some more and just went back in time and built an axeman and now the barbarians are toast.

I am going to win this game no matter how many times I have to reload.

Well, if I were going to cheat , I think I would have worldbuilded my self a machinegun, a gunship, and a GG. I'd get revenge on those barbs. Or some nukes. I think that could be fun.
