1984 is one of the best books I have ever read. Have you read it, Stellar?
I became an anarchist after reading Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia'.
Organised society is incompatible with human freedom. As I strongly lean towards existentialism as a form of personal philosophy, '1984' and the anarchist tradition have had a profound effect on me.
In '1984', the Party seeks to control every aspect of the human mind, by manipulating language, thought, physical freedom and by keeping every citizen under permanent surveillance, with torture and 'disappearance' on any pretext.
Existentialism rejects the idea that we have no freedom in our lives, though. We can make any choice we want to, but say 'I was forced into it', when usually we aren't and just decide to take the easiest option. There are painful consequences to using our freedom, but that doesn't mean we have no freedom.
Existentialists and anarchists never take the easy option because if you do, you sacrifice your freedom. Thats why we're always in trouble with authority, and thats why we struggle against all oppression and inequality.
There is no authority but yourself.
