Where's the "Screaming, immature players, demanding I make faster moves, demanding a faster game, yelling leet speak at eachother is not my idea of fun" option?

Yes, unfortunately to play multiplayer you must make quick decisions and think on your feet. Usually this talent is what separates the bosses from the employees in your work life too.

What about PBEM?

I'm currently running two PBEM games (New World and Highlands over at http://jscarpenter.net/v-web/bulletin/bb/index.php?sid=5d69dc247ed947df1a69022873967efb) but it's far from straight forward ... you still get people dropping out for no reason, break downs in communication, turns get held up, people get impatient and so on.

However, it *does* seem to be a much calmer and more mature crowd of players and the only way you're going to get your Epic scale game against other humans.

I am a boss and if I had someone yelling leet speak at me all day like I was some kind of moron, I'd fire him.

I think you missed the point..thinking fast and making quick decisions..is not I suspect the problem....the immature "yelling" to hurry up and leet speak is.

Oh and to clarify...I run my company :D

Everyone these days, so whats new? You can register a company over the internet if you have a mouse and a cat to keep you company for the 15 minutes you have to sit there.

Hexed weren't you the one in our ladder games who was always asking everyone to hit enter promptly? I think everyone got a little irritated by that towards the end of the game.

Apologies if I have the wrong guy, but I'm pretty sure it was you :p

Very true..but I'd really like to see you run a construction company that way.
You sound very bitter . Need a job?

I play MP games... just not on Gamespy. I have never been a big fan of gamespy. All my MP games are played Direct IP Connections with people I trust and know will stick around for the whole game (even if its continued a week later).

As for your option: I would rather Mod a Singleplayer Game
I actually play my mod in a MP enviroment and its great :P

I need the option: My wife won't let me!

I agree with what vbraun said way, way back: MP is too damned fun, if you ask me. If regular Civ is like digital crack, playing against real human beings is like a gallon-sized heroin needle.

wow... thanks. you got me working on my multiplayer issues, and somehow or other, it's working!

i have absolutely no idea what i did, though, so i can't offer any solutions.

I play MP at LAN parties, but that's about it. I've always found it reassuring to be able to see the faces of the people you're playing against. I guess this is why I don't like online gaming in general.

I'd love to, but I don't because It's unplayable unless you hook up privately. I tried 8 or 9 times. There are no normal people on the public linkup who want to just play a standard settings game of civ from start to finish. Blazing down the line, whinging, quitting, loserfest.

Not to mention that most of the games listed seem to be Italian or Spanish or something and I different version messages 9 times out of 10 I try to connect despite being patched up.

I play multiplayer, only with my friends though, so we don't need no stupid time turners and can actually go to the toilet during the game if we wanted. Also these people you can trust to not turn the game into so linear so its over by like 2000BC. Online, all it is, who has the most forests nearby wins, its so, so ridiculous. Ok you can play, but for me its not fun, and it is no challenge, considering most people just try to get in through brute force rather than tactics. Tactics are the key people.

I'd play MP if...

I could finish a game in one sitting.

I haven't tried to yet because I just don't think its going to pan out like that. I like longer games whilst playing SP but to play MP it would have to be a small map with a quick gamespeed setting.

I'd love to see a mod that streamlines CIV for multiplayer, especially to speed things up.

Say:

small map
100 - 200 turns
1 or 2 era
Specific Victory Conditions
Up the food production for selected squares/improvements so more cities can be built closer together and still grow large enough for specialists.
Less Realism
Less Techs
Less Units
Less Resources
More Diplomacy
More Competitive
More Refined
Keep playing, tweaking, ballancing

Some of my rules would probably include:

2 - 5 minutes per turn (longer breaks at intervals for AFK/diplomacy etc.
No idiots please
Play nice. (no cheating, exploits etc)
Voice Chat preffered
Don't leave the game unless you really have to.
Don't start a game when you don't have time to finish it.

Anyone?

I simply enjoy singleplayer Civ where I can consider my moves and strategy in the order I wish and play at my own pace. It's a very good strategic game, and I like it for that reason, without the hectic tactical action of multiplayer. I play Battlefield 2 for the breakneck (literally) multiplayer action, and Civ for the strategic singleplayer

For now it's becuase it's a pain to join a game with 1.52

The reason I got the game was multiplayer. Sure, single player is fun, but I bore easily playing against programs.

Where is the poll option about how multiplayer is practically unplayable due to all the bugs in it?

I waited patiently for these patches to address the issues, but other than the fix for the lobby jumping around, I havent seen much of an improvement.

-Out of sync errors randomly and often show up ruining the experience
-Players can join already defeated civs! Slows the game down for no reason
-The sluggish interface on top of lag makes it so that commands dont register for a number of seconds(SP runs fine)
-Players halt the game for a long while when joining, and it happens too often
-No option to remove a 'retired' player from the game entirely, instead replaces them with AI. If I wanted to play half the game against AI, I'd just play SP in the first place
-Many other MP bugs that force game restarts or delays and just collectively ruin the experience

Yea I'm sure that I'm in the minority with my multiplayer only angle but online play was something they boasted about so much in previews/reviews that it got my hopes up. Maybe it's just not meant to be for Civ, not this time around anyways.
