I don't understand religion.....

I've been playing this game for a few weeks now but I still don't know how you can tell what religion a rival civ is.

I like to try and keep up to date with diplomatic relations but I'm finding this impossible to keep track of.

It's so frustrating to have a friendly civ suddenly turn against you because of your heathen religion, and yet I can't find anywhere how you can find out what religion that particular civ follows,

any help would be gratefully received, thanks,

A list of all known foreign leaders with their state religions etc should be in your lower right corner. If it's not there, it can ben turned on with a button (nearby) or a shortcut key.

In the right hand corner of game screen you will see a list with each Civ contacted showing you everyones 'score'. Well one of the icons next to each of the Civs name is one that tell you what that Civs religion is- A little cross for Christian, The Tao symbol for Taoism, A little gold Buddha for Buddhism etc...

You can find that information on the little civ list in the bottom right corner of the main screen. Each civ listed has displayed:
1) if you have trade route with them
2) open borders agreement
3) their state religion - the sign of the religion. If the sign has a golden star, you know they also own the holy city for that religion.

I'm going to load it up to check it out now.

Am I right in assuming a rival civ will only dislike you on religious grounds if they have a different state religion from you, and that if they have no state religion they will not care what religion you are?

You are correct

[added] They wont care if they have "free religion" civic btw.

Yes, with one caveat; some of the more zealous AI's will ask you to convert to their religion, with a diplomatic penalty if you refuse.
