Where online can I find a simple (not too costly) P4 computer with at least 512MB of RAM for email and facebook use?

A pentium 4 computer with 512MB RAM is basically worthless nowadays, I wouldn't pay over $100 for one.

For $270 you can get a Dell with a ~2.2 GHz Celeron/Sempron, 2GB RAM, 320GB hard drive.

yeah thats true, but you can usually get one for like $50-80, and all I need it for is internet. So why would I pay $270 for internet?

Because it's going to be significantly faster internet which is less likely to go up in smoke.

I've got spare 2GHz/2GB ram machines in my closet that I'd basically give away to anyone local who asked for them.

You can find machines that old on ebay or craigslist, but like Zelig said, they are for the most part worthless. Most cannot run flash reliably. If all you need is light internet access, get a netbook. May be a bigger investment, but its also pretty darned portable.

Even with XP, 512 mb RAM would be pretty slow.

You probably won't get very good internet/email usage out of such an outdated machine even if you were using old software since even websites themselves are now clogged up with flash and other junk.
