I was JUST stung by a scorpion.

Your scorpion stings you, and he's still alive ? :hmm:

(scorpions as pets... How did you get this idea ?)

Scorpions have a beauty all there own.
Scorpions are an exotic pet and they have a majesity that cant be explained.
I have had one woman that I work with say that my scorpion is "Kinda Cute in its own sort of way" So Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

and yes its still alive keep in mind that I am actually suprised that I got stung considering the other five I have are MUCH less jumpy. my first scorpion 'Bob' is very easy going, bob is used to human contact and wont freak out and sting me, but this one seems to be scared of me for some reason. oh well can't blame it for its natural defense anyway.

Scorpions look too much like a spider for being cute ^^

(and well, allowing a pet to attack a human, while it's understandable on a "it's its instincts" point of view, is unacceptable when it comes to safety. Ok, I admit that for scorpions, who will never get out of a cage, it's much less a problem. But still...)

Ok what would you have me do? just kill the scorpion? Say your cat scratches you would you kill it? I know most people would say yes but they really wouldn't No, you would try and figure out why your cat scratched you and avoid that situation in the future. Its a different story with dogs though, they are one of the few animals that we find it socially accaptable to just take back and shoot because it harmed a human.
Every animal has its own set of rules and you cannot compare the treatment of animal when they harm humans much.

The biggist diff between what your talking about is where does the resposibility lie when an animal hurts another human being?
scorpions can not learn to go against there Instincts therefor it is the handlers resposiblity when they get stung.

Well, the difference is, a cat/dog can be punished in such a way he understand he shouldn't attack a human.
It's a different story with a scorpion, as it's far less intelligent and far harder to train and teach.

And my main concern is about the danger such a pet can pose to people if it escapes.

Im still alive after being stung so the only danger is some bit of pain. If the scorpion escapes then I think most of the danger is actually to the scorpion as it would escape into an envorment were it will be killed on sight.
and the only question asked would be "did you see the size of that damned thing?"

Reminds me of two things:
- the importing-alien-species-to-a-foreign-country episodes of the Simpsons (one where Bart brings his toad to Australia in Bart vs. Australia and the one where he kills the bird and cares for the lizards that hatch from its eggs)

- Gary Larson Cartoons with snakes eating their owners (especially the one cartoon in rejected section of The Pre-History of the Far Side, where the caption reads "You have not seen this, turn the page").

I found a scorpion in my bag once. It was very small though, and not from a more exotic place than France... I also wasn't stung by it...

I like cute pets, like cats and hamsters, but I still think non-cute pets should be allowed. I'm more afraid of dogs, because owners can bring them practically everywhere they go, and a whole bunch don't keep them leashed, while no one would bring a scorpion down town for a walk...

Well, on you it was only a burn and some dizzyness. On a child or some elderly people, it could be lethal.

(and yes, the scoprion would be probably dead quite quickly, that is, if someone dare to approach it)

What size it is ?

I got stung (well, bitten rather) more than 12 times under my armpit by a wasp when I was at a summer camp 15 years ago. Of course, it was really hot that morning, and right after breakfast... Something must've smelled tastey under there... :undecide:

The only scorpion I saw was a really tiny one a few houses up from me. That was just about as long ago, too.

Why the confusion? Where you bitten or were you stung???

In my time I've walked into a wasp nest and was stung...well ALOT  and ran the quickest 2 miles I've ever done back home to mum who was able to do **** all! :D

Also my dad used to keep bees, which on one of those rare sunny days in Aberdeen would swarm and sting everyone they could  The worst occasion was when I fled the swarm and locked myself in the bathroom only to find some bees had gotten in and they went for me...I survived, the final bee died trying to climb up my nostril

Since the age of 11, though these nasty creatures have left me alone

Scorpions fall into my "destroy on sight if found inside the home" category, which also includes spiders, evil-looking bees (wasps, hornets, etc), poisonous snakes, Al Sharpton, and undomesticated rodents.

Was there any swelling or discoloration around the bite? You should really see a doctor. Unless Im mistaken, scorpion venom is a neurotoxin. There can be long term side effects which arent immediately apparent. Seriously, see a doctor.

Well, if Kefka mysteriously stops posting I guess we'll know why.

Shouldn't you see a doctor or something?
Make sure it's not a foreign one. "No shot, scorpion sting!" ;)

Funny thread indeed. :D But I agree you should see a doctor, Kefka.

The worst thing I ever had was one bite by a wasp, so nothing special. I really hate those creatures though, and must admit I'm quite scared of them! The worst horror scene I've seen was a woman trapped in a room with lots of angry wasps (The Crush, Alicia Silverstone).

Can someone explain why Vermin and Reptiles were added to that list? Pets are supposed to be companions valued for their usefulness, beauty, companionship, or some combination of the three. Why are creatures that exhibit none of these traits invited into people's homes?
They are interesting. Curiosity is one of mankind's strongest feelings.

He properly got the idea from a friend...how got it from a friend…How got his idea from a friend...how got the idea from his younger brother...how he got the idea from a drunk on the park bench!

I hear the hornet is rather dangerous! :(

I have 2 dogs and 3 cats. My dog is probably more dangerous then many other animals. It was bit me in the ear when it was chasing me. I learned not to run with it. My family gets sick of our dogs alot because on our deck they scratch the door. The paints come off it.
