If you had more time, you would play...

Everyone has them, from the game you just can't get enough of that you would literally devote all waking hours to it, to the cd-rom you picked up for $2 off an amazon sale that's been collecting dust but you really want to get to it (in my case it would be a bazillion steam games from seasonal sales. Can't resist 75% off!). So pretending that you now have unlimited time what would you play? I don't mean unlimited in the sense that you are an immortal who has the time to terraform every planet in spore, I mean if you had no work/family commitments and basically the only things you had to do on a daily basis were sleep, eat and the occasional shower. Would you simply play civ 20 hours a day? Or branch out and sample a bunch of games?

I wish that I had more time to revisit the assassin's creed series. I have 1, 2 and brotherhood because I just can't pass up steam sales! But 1 got a little repetitive after 20 hours or so and I moved on to other games and haven't been back. I have heard 2 and beyond make drastic improvements but I don't want to spoil the storyline, I just have this feeling there's a epic reveal coming somewhere soon... maybe not, but that's the fun of playing them in order.

The other games I wish I had time for are Galactic Civs 2, Crusader Kings 2, Master of Orion 2, Sins of a Solar Empire- basically any strategy game that requires a bit of investment to pick up. It's not like these games are hard or not fun to play right off the bat, but much like civ they can take a bit to get the feel for them and with limited time it's just easier to get my strategy fix off civ or supreme commander.

I would also like to take a mass effect character from 1 all the way through end of 3 on the hardest mode, but honestly it doesn't sound that appealing, more just a personal challenge than actual fun considering I dislike the first one and 2 and 3 play too similar I'd get bored.

I have upwards of 18 hours a day to play games most of the time now, and its still not enough to finish CK2 or a Total War campaign or GW2.

I also need a better job that actually has regular work.

daggerfall, i guess. heard it's as buggy and tedious and bland as arena.

and maybe finally get about buying a homeworld game, though i quite suck at realtime games that need micro-management.

and the IRL stock/bonds market, IF i had any money and lots of time...

...my ever increasing collection of classic games. Mostly Sega stuff that I never owned back in the day but have slowly gathered over the last 20 years.

These days I juggle my time between Elder Scrolls (III, IV, and V), CKII, and modding CKII. And very occasionally Total War or SimCity 4 and other things. Wish I had more time to do all of them at once.

I want to play through Skyrim, The Legend of Grimrock, the rest of the various Total War games, some of the FPS games I have but haven't touched yet (metro 2033, stalker, etc.).. not to mention more of KSP, which I've been avoiding.. and.. well.. there's just so many games in my library now. I want to play them all. Good thing I don't have a wife

Basically, I would play all of the games I have bought within the last 2 years if I had more time.

A game like Skyrim is particularly rough because you're never quite done with it.

Some of the tens of dirt cheap games I've picked up over the years and barely touched. Failing that, I'd go back to the classics, such as Arcanum, KotOR or The Elder Scrolls.

Finish a bunch of series I've picked up over steam sales, get some more time into CKII campaigns as well as Civ V campaigns.

So many games, so little time!

:O

Mobboss had a full time army job and managed to play like a bazillion MMOs

I'm running into the opposite problem... I'm having trouble finding games that suck me in - been watching more TV lately =/

I would take the time to learn how to play Europa Universalis III.

I second this. I bought it after my disappointment with civ 5 (I have since tempered this slightly after gods and kings, which improves it a great deal IMO). After watching a number of online tutorials and various other things I have since concluded that its probably the most inaccessible game ive ever played. Its so vastly complex, so detailed, you simply dont know where to begin. In another life i may have invested the time to it. But there is a lot of choice in the games market now, im older, i have a job, i have other commitments. I dont have the time for something like this.

Another game i would probably like but dont have the time to invest in it is world of warcraft. I was a big fan of the RTS so im fairly sure i would like the MMORPG. But i have heard that it consumes your life. My ex girlfriend was a big player. She used to come back from university, have dinner, then play WOW from about 1800-200. Then rinse and repeat. Needless to say this relationship didnt last that long.:(

Wow is fun but it is not casual at all. Requires a gigantic time commitment to do anything fun, despite what people try to tell you. At it's very best you can schedule 5-10 hours a week but you need a well established, mature group who will adhere to that schedule otherwise you accomplish nothing and it's just a frustration.

I'd just stay away, it's not really fun if you try to play for just an hour here and there.

I'm usually a pretty casual gamer - but I found EU3 accessible enough.. The thing is that your first couple campaigns are going to be learning campaigns, so you almost have to concede that they are going to end up with you making bad decisions somewhere, leading to your kingdom or empire falling apart at some point. There is a learning curve, and it takes some time to become decent enough at the game to play it on average settings without everything falling apart at some point... But I didn't find it that crazy. I didn't even watch any tutorial videos, I just sort of started playing and learning things along the way. I'm sure I would have learned the game a lot quicker if I took the time to properly study it and watch a couple videos instead of just diving into it.

I found Football Manager and Kerbal Space Program to have much steeper learning curves for example. I am playing through the 20th+ FM season and I'm still learning things. Each playthrough of a season I would learn something new - a different aspect of the game.

Maybe it's just that I still don't really know everything about EU3. I'm at a level where I can play a game on average settings and have a fun time... I've put in hundreds of hours into the game, but there are still a lot of advanced topics I haven't really bothered to learn. But that's me - casual gamer - I learn things as I go, and once I reach a sufficient enough level in a game I usually just enjoy playing instead of spending a lot of time to learn more. I'm not like those people who sit there and learn all the ins and outs of a game and learn all the exploits. I learn enough to have a good time.

So I dunno, I find EU3 accessible enough. But you are right that it has a learning curve that newcomers to the series (and strategy games on that scale & using UI like that) will take a long time to master or even get decent at.

If I had the time I would finish all the stuff I'm working on for the Civ4 mods in my signature, and then I would create my own total conversion mod based on Age of Wonders. I'm currently playing through the AoW2: Shadow Magic campaign as I wait for AoW3. I also have a number of games on Steam that I've picked up from deals or bundles that I want to play sometime. The list includes:
Bastion
DOTA2
Terraria
Half Life 2
EU3
Company of Heroes
Darksiders
KB: The Legend & Armored Princess
X-COM (the original)
(Skyrim and one of the Total War games are also on my wishlist)
