If you were running for President....

Would you continue to run for President if your wife were ill with cancer?

Ah...Edwards is beyond rich from his days as a attorney. He is a millionaire several times over. He doenst have to work another day in his life if he didnt want to.

And I think everyone would recognize there is a big difference in paying someone to take care of your loved one....and you doing it yourself personally.
Quite true.He is no true representative for the working-class or the middle.

Its a virtual gurantee that Edwards will spend far more in his campaign than he would ever raise for the party.
If that is true. Then i guess the organization that offer the service of the campaign ticket is laughing inside because John Edwards is really fooling himself to think he is gonna win.

Without hesitation, I would withdraw from the race.

There would be no way I would continue running or even think about running if my loved one was sick. Running for president alone adds a lot of stress and strain to a family, adding a deadly illness is way too much. My time would be much better spent tending to the needs of my loved one, with my political ambitions being put on the side burner. I think this will poll very badly for Edward's, as he lacks the compassion to even care for his wife.

Honestly, yes i would.

Me being by my wifes side wont help her cancer treatment.

I would pull out. If my wife loved me enough she'd probably tell me to keep going anyways, as true love is selfless and is focused more on the other person than on oneself.

By that same selfless love concept, and my family priorities, I personally would pull out. Every moment would be precious to both of us, and no job, no matter how valuable or important, would be more important than her to me.

Would you pull out if the cancer spread to her entire body?

If that happened she would die anyway and you would ruin the chance of a lifetime that most people never get!

You can comfort her over the phone anyways...

I would continue forward... together.

Voted no, but I have no concept of whatever it is that seduces politicians so. Maybe if that were my thing, I would respond differently.

What if Mrs. Edwards lives another 25 years and he gives up his chance? There's that possibility. He won't win, though, IMO.

Actually, it has been proven through studies that people with less stress and being comforted by their loved ones live longer. Thats been fairly common knowledge for quite some time.

Her cancer has spread to her bone marrow.

Again, Edwards is young. What chance is he exactly missing out on? Losing a presidential election? He would have more than enough time to do this at his leisure down the road after this family crisis were dealt with.

Yeah...thats true love in action. Remember to send her the long distance bill as well.

Expected life expectancy of her stage of cancer is 3 to 5 years. The odds of her living 25 years with stage 4 cancer are virtually nil.

It depends on what she genuinely wanted me to do, and what her chances were, and how long they thought she would live. If she's gonna die in 6 months, then screw campaigning. If she has a reasonable chance of living till she's 70 and she wants you to go for it, then sure.

Either way, I don't think we should criticize Edwards on this one, especially as we don't know all the facts.

What facts do we not know? We know he is polling a distant third among the democrats. We know his wife's cancer is now in her bone marrow and is stage 4, inoperable. We know the have young children. We know her life expectancy is roughly 3 to 5 years, and much of that spent wasting away to the cancer.

Plus, I think most of us know how we think we would react to this entire situation which is the main question here.

Edwards should get those divorce precedings started while hes still young. Maybe he has a chance of marrying a younger woman after she dies in grief. Wait 5 years and he will be old too. :p

I'd still run for president, but with the USA being a needlessly militaryistic democracy and all I wouldn't be able to do much good if I were president anyway. :run: (yes, that smiley is nessessary)

My own personal feeling is that Edwards staying in the race is even more important to his wife than it is to him. From all acounts they seem to actually love each other. If he quit because of her illness, on top of all the stress associated with any diagnosis of uncurable cancer, the extra burden of feeling like its her fault he didnt run for President, would be intolerable.

Thank you.

This is exactly what I would say if I weren't so mad I could spit.

This thread is so disgusting. My ignore list has about tripled in size...

I can handle a lot, but speculating about when this poor woman is going to die, not even hiding that you don't give a crap except insofar as it affects the election and allows you to call John Edwards "heartless," is over the line. By about a mile.

I doubt any of the people who posted such comments know someone who has or had cancer. And if you did, then you're definitely going to burn.

Good for Eran, Igloo and Elrohir for being about the only non-lefties I could find in this thread who aren't going to rot in hell.
