IGN Preview and Video (04/08/10)

City-states have traits (Vienna is cultured). This may just be the maritime, military, etc. distinction.

Desert gives 2 commerce, but desert hills give 2 production? Maybe hills supercedes everything and makes a tile 2 production regardless of the base terrain, but then there is a forest/grassland/hill/river that gives 1food/1prod/1commerce. In terms of importance, forest > hill > terrain???

Desert floodplains give 2 food/ 2commerce in one shot of the video and 2 food/ 1 commerce in another. A building/tech/social policy that buffs rivers?

To your last question: probably a Golden Age.

Wow. Stunning graphics. It really looks good. Gameplay will be very interesting. I hope my PC likes it as well :)

Edit: In addition to the traditional catapults, I also see giant crossbows on wheels.

Those are Ballistas, a Roman UU that replaces the Catapult.

Legions are again +2 Strength over Swordsmen (13 vs 11), plus the road/fort construction ability. Combine that with Ballistas in the same era, and Rome should be appropriately feared in the Classical age.
The Roman Empire indeed. At least ballistas are really fragile, and the legions are somewhat limited by iron access. But if you don't keep an eye on the Romans, they could just run all over another civ. I do like how the legions actually have a useful role in peacetime though (Road networks and/or fort checkpoints).

I reposted this, because nobody should have to watch the "Hi-Res" Version that IGN offers in its awful player,

The video has been re-uploaded in full 720p HD on a proper video site, you tube.

Youtube HD IGN Civ5 Preiview Video

I would have posted in the existing thread but a link on page 2 might not be clicked by everybody, if a mod wishes to edit the original post in the other thread to include the HD Youtube link then so be it.

Enjoy.

Moderator Action: I've merged this into the original thread. The third post in this thread suggests watching the video in Hi-Res, so that should suffice.

No because the IGN players "Hi-Res" is a low res and shoddy example of a "Hi-Res" video, thanks to the IGN video player. :),

If you could edit the link atleast into the Original Post, or Indeed if the Original Poster see's this post, can you edit it in yourself, the youtube HD 720p Video is miles better in quality and if you pause it you don't get a silly symbol on the screen, does the IGN player think its playing VHS :P.

There are some new diplomacy options in the video.

Askia wants to form a "Pact of Secrecy" to oppose Bismarck, which does not lead to a declaration of war. The response choices there are "Yes, let us do what we can," "How dare you?", and "Sorry, we have no interest in this arrangement." It would be nice if "How dare you?" allows you to inform Bismarck for some brownie diplo points.

Ramkhamhaeng wants a "Pact of Cooperation," which could be a fun option if it were something like an informal alliance in early ages.

As you can see the IGN video preview shows a less pretty lower left corner in the UI, I much prefered the larger art picture of the unit in the previous UI.

Their are a few other differences with new art&icons in the top right and bottom right on the UI.
Most obvious though is the addition of a "Science UI" in the top left corner, this could suggest that this UI is the "advanced" UI version we have heard will be an option for more advanced players, in any case, I am liking the new addition to the UI giving easy science access, however I don't much like the change from the larger artistic picture to the smaller lower left UI, even if it does save a little space on the screen.

"Set the speed of the game, apply one of eight difficulty settings, and set the size of the map (which at its largest comprises 12 players and 24 city-states), and you're into the game. "

I'm not sure that that's good news.

That has to be one of the greatest things I've heard. Secret alliances were the main things that caused World War I, and this definitely makes the Civilization Franchise much more historically accurate. I'm surprised that no mod for Civilization IV has thought of it yet.

The boarders look so so much better on this, its still not quite as i would like, but it looks a lot smoother,

Didnt Greg say onetime that we he could play with up to 23 civs plus city states? This says 12 and 24 city states is the largest. Also this says you have to complete 5 social policies to build Utopia, isnt it 6?

hopefully IGN got it wrong

Because 12 civs and 24 city states is very disappointing

That's probably just under the "play now" option. How many civs were in the largest map in BtS when you clicked play now? Didn't you have to customize the game to turn the extra civs on?

I was always playing BTS with 17-18 civs, on a huge map. And you know what, it stroke me as odd as it did to you. BUT, I wasn't about to go on the board and whine about it because in the end I haven't played the game and who says the 24 city states don't make up for the 6 civs difference? Besides, Gregg said that you could play up to 21 civs in the latest build...

Stop being childish people. Take a deep breath and think before getting mad or disapointed.

To look at in another way, if you play 18 civs, how many of them are still alive and independent by the time the Renaissance starts? Closer to 12 than 18 in most games I'd say.

Has anyone else noticed that theres no snow on any of the mountains...

Seasons?
