Civ VII VR first look

I can't believe I am seeing leaders having no legs in a trailer. It looks like a jarring visual bug. It ruins all this "immersive" hocus pocus. It looks ridiculous. It's like they wanted to top Britain having no unique unit model in very expensive DLC. I am convinced in both cases they simply ran out of money and/or time, no way anybody looked at the sharply cut upper halves of leaders hovering above the ground and said "this looks good".

This transcends "embarrassing" and enters the territory of "humiliating".

That's still secondary, of course, to the fundamental question: why the hell would I like to play an abstract strategy game in VR? I have barely any desire to play immersive first person sims in VR, and there is no desire for me to personally embody... abstract force hovering over the map and the spreadsheets for millenia...

The only reason I can think they did it would be that if you played it in multiplayer it'd be really hard to get the human opponents to have working legs so ig they decided simply nobody should have legs?

The main reason for leaders to not have legs is that it's pretty hard to align them with surfaces in AR mode.

they could align them with the ground, their upper bodies are going to be represented over furniture in small play areas anyway.

So, excuse me if I'm daft here, but is this actually real and not an april's fools joke? Because I thought for sure it must be a joke?

Yes, it is true. :yup: Please have a look at post 1of this thread with the trailer. You can see those ridiculous leaders, that I described as "ghosts" in that trailer.

The nau snake is in my belly

but it will be dropping onto the floor shortly.

Looking through the trailer, there's also what looks like futuristic, fourth-age infrastructure (but is more likely just placeholder assets or smth that probably wasnt meant to be in shown footage lol)

This is definitely giving off "Civ is a boardgame and the other leaders are players" feel. I understand what they are trying to do but the execution just feels off. With the Switch 2 version coming out the Nintendo versions won't be the worst looking ones anymore.

if they went all in on these other players, fully voiced by LLM AI tuned to portray each's personality, maybe even aware of the environment ie commented on your house or apartment each time they visited -- it could work imo. But i dont imagine they have planned anything so ambitious

there's something special about hotseat civ with a buddy, maybe that element might be captured in VR

Missed this one - if it was that easy, it wouldn't be a difficult problem ;)

Some games manage it I think (HL2: Alyx, right?). But others don't. And even when some achieve it, when the kinematics go wrong, it can look jarring in its own way (as jarring as floating torsos, YMMV).

These images might well end up becoming for the gaming world the very icons of "unfinished game" (since that's one of the knocks on Civ VII in the first place).

There is a MR mode for Alyx ?

I was thinking of Thrill of the Fight (boxing) or Drop Dead: The Cabin (zombies invading your room) for games I tested in MR with NPC.

I thought the trailer was part of the joke - seeing the quality of it, it certainly looks like something an intern patched together on short notice.

If this is the kind of ... they prioritize for the game, I have officially lost all respect for and faith in the current developer team.

I wanted the diplomacy screen to lookt like this for a long time. It's such a logical way to design it, and makes multilateral treaties easy to implement.

So yeah, i think this looks amazing and makes me hopeful for the next stage. :) even if it looks a bit silly here.
