I've recruited a sub. gmaharriet. she'll go after me.
This is my first look at this thread. Um, AK didn't mention in his introduction that I've never played an SG (just lurked), my usual play level is Regent, and I'm usually a builder, though I have won 2 AW games at low levels. I don't think even AK knows that I've never tried Commie, spying or mobilization or more than 8 civs at one time. I had about 70 cities just once.

I'll go back and read through the thread and study SW's save (even though that's not the one I'd be playing) to familiarize myself with what's going on, but you guys better discuss whether or not you're really willing to take a chance on me. I would really understand if any of you aren't comfortable. :)

Take your time; you've got the support of the 3 local idiots ;)

Hey guys.
I am in the process of looking to move right now, and thus lack the time to really play civ3.
The current landlord sold the building I was living in, and the new owner can best be described as a fruit loop.
Thus I have a very limited amount of time to locate a new living abode, agree with the wife on it, secure fianancing and move.
Due to these constraints, I will have to curtail my civ3 play which unfortunately includes this game.

thanks for the notice. good luck on the house hunting. I'm still trying to figure out strategy. Promise I'll get this up asap

Admiral K is up and I'm on deck, I believe. I've read through the thread and looked at SW's save to get a general feel for what's going on. I'm thoroughly intimidated  , but I'll give it a try when the save comes in.

My plan is to see how much I can get done in 48 hours, then stop to ask what the team wants. Maybe stop for questions even after 1 turn if I get confused. This is way bigger than anything I've attempted before, so it may take me a long time to play a single turn. I don't want to mess it up :D

Edited to add: AK may STILL be celebrating his birthday. :p

dont be afraid. if i can do it, surely you can :D
just go slow if youre not used to such empire sizes.
maybe these 12 simple steps:

check diplo to see who are our enemies.
scan for enemy units around the borders.
scan for friendly troops.
look for threats (enemy troops inbound).
decide on immediate objectives.
check the builds. build what you think is most beneficial.
MM towns for best results and happiness.
kill those enemies using the best assorted troops you can. get to know how many arties, assault and defense you have.
advance.
cycle for happy faces.
estimate next turns enemy moves.
cover your troops.
press enter.

need another day. things moving slowly. We're railing the landbridge to get to North America. things should break open in the next 2-3 turns.

Thank you, SW, for putting that in such clear, logical order. It should be very helpful.

@AK, would you please leave me a summary of the rules about number of wars and techs per age, etc. along with your save. It's been a few days now since I read the thread, and I'm not clear on what they are and where we stand with them, and they may change with your turns.

I'll be returning to work from vacation tomorrow and won't have so much free time for the rest of the week.

I know this isn't a training game, but I have an "idiot" question.

I just re-read the last 4 pages to bring myself back up to speed a bit and I've noticed several mentions of disbanding a town. Um, what's the difference between razing and disbanding? I've read about building settler/workers to reduce population down to zero (never tried it). Is disbanding something else entirely? If so, how do you do it? If it is building settler/worker, how do you time it to happen without growth?

no worries grama ponytail ;)
in the town menu, (after a rigt click) near the bottom you'll find an ABANDON CITY button.
it does exactly that. its RAZED.
if you do that make sure to sell everything inside before hand.

you do this when you have little chance of keeping it (due to enemy units) or just want to clear some room for other towns.

Razing a town is done to an ENEMY TOWN (usually with little pop, and no culture, or one with a great flip risk) taht you dont want to keep.
DISBANDING a town is the SAME, but only selfinflicted.

i never tried that "pop a settler on growth to 3, so the town disbands, leaving a freash settler" tactic.
but i've heard of it done often.

if im not clear enough, say so, and ill elaborate.
its just to darn early in the morning for me.
