I'm back for one game at least

Lurker:
Been a while, since I played with NP and The Rat and they have stopped posting at CFC. I think only Greebly is still playing from my days of SG's.

Yes, it's been quite a while. Rat was posting a couple months ago, although in another forum where the subject matter had nothing at all to do with Civ.

I don't use combat settlers myself, but I've been in a number of SGs with Northern Pike who used to do it quite a bit. If it's not blatant, like you're using four of them in a chain to drill into a civ, I'm ok with it.
No, I play 'fair' in that sense. I consider Settler-creeping ("plant Town 1 within our borders, move Settler to Site2, disband Town1, found Town2, move Settler to Site3, disband Town2, found Town3...") to be an exploit too far, and I don't use it.

What I do is, move my combat-Settler onto foreign soil, under cover of military units — preferably an Army (which, OK, is somewhat exploitative -- but less so once the AI has Bombers!), and found the next turn, on a site I intend to keep (e.g. it's a good place for a farm), usually a couple of tiles/ distance 3 from the nearest towns.

I'll try and play at least a couple of turns this evening. Will probably only do 5T on this set altogether.
Been a while, since I played with NP and The Rat and they have stopped posting at CFC. I think only Greebly is still playing from my days of SG's.
I was gonna say I could have sworn I'd seen them both [recently] in LK's SG-threads, but it looks like the last one @ThERat played in was in 2018. And (IIRC) NP kibbitzed my Vikings SG, but that was in 2017, and he since appears to have left CFC completely ("Member not found")... :(

Done 4T so far. Managed to 'persuade' Hammi to DoW us, so our eastern European border has moved further east (Gdansk and Tirana will be foundable on your next turn), and Greenland is almost an Aztec- and Bab-free zone.

Kinda wishing you hadn't DoW'd Hiawatha so early, though: his Bombers have been causing merry hell, and (I think) pushing up WW. I lost a Carrier + all its aircraft on the first IBT, and we've since also lost 2 or 3 Destroyers, mainly sunk in port; he's lost 4 or 5 Bombers out of (maybe?) a couple of dozen (feels like that, anyway).

He also does not appear to be getting much distracted by Brennus + Khan (+ most recently Lizz, thanks Obama Khan!). Some rather tall stacks of Iro foot-soldiers (mostly Infs) just arrived near Edrine, with more incoming over the Bosphorus. Our Tanks have killed a few, but I haven't enough Arty + Bombers to ping them all, so our (Inf-)Armies have been blocking the high ground instead of advancing.

I'm kind of inclined to just Settler-disband Edrine, so we can refound in a more defensible position, closer to Ellipi...

Aaaaand I'm done...

Handover:

I think I'll let the pictures do most of the talking this time. Here's Europe:

Eastern European front 1400 AD.png

Gdansk can be founded in place. Our Tanks near Edrine are somewhat depleted, but we will start building Modern Armor this interturn. Our 4 empty Armies are waiting to be filled in Lorient, and some Tanks (or Modern Armor, if you want to upgrade on arrival in Europe) to fill them are about to be shipped from Greenland:

Greenland 1400 AD.png

Canada is looking quite similar to Greenland: there are some Cavs approaching the last known Iroquois cities on our mainland, but I don't think it's worth going after the last couple of Iro TrashTowns on the Tundra-islands.

Our South Pacific campaign against Bismarck has also begun, but the needed Transports haven't yet arrived at Rabau to collect the Tanks I airlifted there a couple of turns back:

New Guinea 1400 AD.png

There is also a Transport heading for the Bering Strait, carrying a Marine + Tanks to start annoying the Babs + Germans in Siberia. And also Shaka: he just MA'd with Hiawatha against us, so Swazi can be burned down next turn, which should (with any luck) finish him off for good.

(We just got a jump in WW from 10% to about 50%, which I think is due to Shaka's backstab. It's been barely 20T since we signed the PT, so the Zulu-WW won't have worn off yet. Of course, the Iro Bombers don't help either, so you might want/need to crank LUX% up to 20% before ending the turn...).

I think there might still be a couple of Pacific Transports on automoves (sorry), and although I think I cancelled the remaining moves for most/all of the faster escorts on the tile where their protectee stopped, it's possible that I sentried 1 or 2 of them, and then didn't cycle back to them. So make sure all ships are awake before you do any stack-moves.

Save is below.

Which absolutely would have worked...right up to the time he got the Celts to sign an MPP with him before I even got a chance to start the first turn.

This guy's got nine lives, I swear...

Battlefield update on turn #4:

The Iroquois stacks are gone. So is virtually all his cash. Babylon lost their new capital to us. Our armor is over the Don and driving into the Caucasus. Baku is straight ahead. Reinforcements continue to flow into Europe via nine new airfields in Newfoundland and the GIUK transports.

In the Pacific, Manila has fallen and our troops approach Luzon.

It's great seeing new Civ3 games! Thanks for your efforts. Quick question... exactly what is the name of the biq/bix for this map?

Lurker:

It is called "Marla Singer's World Map", comes with Civ3 not sure which version. C3C has it and bix is PTW, so would think that is when it came in to civ. It loads in C3C.

Thanks for the comment HardCode, glad you're enjoying this.

Pre-turn We don’t seem able to keep this transport chain functioning as I had planned it with 2 transports at each station, so something for me to work on. These Euro cities will start getting torched once we have the IroWave under control.

We lose about 3 lone units to badguyz in Europe. Iro bombers are punished for raids on Rome

Synthetic fibers in, computers in 8 @40% but that may change.

WW is indeed up, now 29%.

1405AD (1)

New Chondote razed for 17g, now these tundra towns aren’t even worth going after.

Telloh in Greenland taken after defending rifle taken by tank.

War-Sawe and Copenhagen are just useless with resistors like this. Burned them both and replaced.

I scrap almost all the medieval units including those holding high ground in various places, i.e. UK, and Iceland. We had a stack in SA I use to speed up settler deliveries. We’ll deal with any remote invasions as they take place and save some money in the meantime.

I send back the tanks in the transport headed for Germany/Japan. We need them in Europe.

I pull back from the surrounding ground around our European holdings. The Aztecs and Iroquois get hammered by our artillery and bombers. The combat settlers are going to have to fend for themselves and will probably be losses. We need to beat back the Iroquois wave first, then advance in that area.

IBT Babs take Intombe. Nothing we could do about that one.

Vikes and Maya sign peace deal

Aztecs declare war on the Celts and Mongols. Don’t think that was too smart.

1410AD (2)

New Akwesasne levelled in ice wasteland. No gold.

3 Iro units killed by our bombers outside Edrine that had been shot up and worked over last turn. Arty and bombers now have that stack redlined. Time to send in the MA

Guerilla first then 17 redlined infantry follow. Four MA armies take out 16 full health infantry. Two of our regular tank corps take out 5 more. Another 5 to individual MA units and his stack is now reg muskets. Hlobane cav takes down a couple and back to the MA that went elite. Kill another infantry and that leave 2 reg warriors. And how nice, first attack gets another MGL. Load that army with the vet wounded warriors from the earlier MA battles and kill last reg warrior, then that army is off to Lorient with the Hlobane cav for rest and recovery. Lose a bomber to a fighter when attacking a destroyer in the Med. Other bombers redline it and DD Reid sinks her. That should be 49-1 so far.

Colonel Roosevelt’s Rough Riders arrive at Warsaw to kill 3 Aztec cav. Bombers take out a couple others and a Bab rifle 55-1

DD Nicholson takes out a Bab galley a dozen tiles SE of Hilo.

Our Age of Sail Display between Iceland and the UK is formally closed as most frigates there are sent to the breakers in Chalco.

Workers in NA now building a line of outposts to watch over our northern regions. Workers in Europe flipping mines to farms.

Iro-Europe count now 14 inf, 11 marine and a warrior.

IBT lost a ship at Gibraltar due to Iro-bombers. The USAF is castigated for lack of air cover in Europe.

1415AD (3)

Our first elite MA attack vs Bab pike gives us MGL.

Akkad taken, sell harbor, raze and replace. Now Vilnius.

Lose one MA at Ellipi. Kill 3 rifles and a knight. City taken, now Dnepropetrovsk.

Iros are now in the Modern Age with 44 gold left. Visible now are 5 Iro tanks. 5 marines, 2 inf.

Add a pair of airfields in the UK and send out 3 marines to Western US to go to the Pacific.

The assault on the Philippines begins. Supported by the carrier Constellation and destroyers Oldendorf , Kincaid and Hewitt. 2 US Marines take out a sword and spear at Manilla. Our tank army is landed to the north. A redlined spear still defends.

Shuffle our European defenses. We need more of everything. Add 9 new airfields around tundra towns Hopedale NAS and Cartwright NAS in Newfoundland. With those in place, 9 MA are flown into Europe.

IBT

Vikes and Spain sign peace treaty

Sumeria, with nothing better to do, joins the Mongol alliance against Hiawatha. Germany follow suit. Spain joins Mongolian conflict against Babylon. Sumeria gets an MPP with the Mayans.

Vikes join the Zulu alliance against the Iroquois. Zulu declare war on Spain. SOMEONE PLEASE FINISH THIS GUY OFF!!!

1420AD (4)

I’m going to try and get the latest Iro stacks cleaned out. Arty hits first of three stacks. 6 marine, 4 tank cleared out.

Second stack cleaned out.

Third stack lose a MA, get an MGL.

Modern armor and cav army take out 3 defenders at English Nottingham, modern armor kills a marine and down it goes. Sell off improvements, raze and replace. Now Novorossiysk.

8 modern armor and 1 TOW Inf airlifted from NA to Europe.

In the Pacific, our marines finish what they started and Manilla is ours. Our Sherman tanks head north towards Luzon.

WW is hitting us hard at the end of this turn, even at 40% lux, SA is needing a lot of clowns now.

IBT Sumeria says what the Hell and allies with Vikings against England.

England and Celts ally vs Spain.

Attacks by some Iro bombers on our fleet. A pair of F-15s don’t intercept. Ten of their tanks arrive with a marine, we get an arty captured.

1425AD (5)

1st Tank Corps kills 2 spears and Nuremberg falls, now Luzon.

2 infantry redlined at Aztecs Uskudar and killed by modern armor. Now Baku.

Take out a couple Aztec units losing one of our own. Build roads to the west now for bringing up arty.

Cav army and one modern armor take out 3 defenders and take Iznik, now Incirlik

Modern Armor Army takes out 3 defenders at Bursa after heavy artillery barrage. Cav army kills 3 more and we take that city along with Smith’s Trading Company. The troublesome Iro stacks in Europe are now cut off. We also now have incense which will counter some of our WW nicely. Bursa now Adana.

Tank and MA army kill 7 Iro tanks and 2-3 more by single modern tanks. Those stacks are now gone.

Sign RoP with the Mongols.

3 modern armor attack without loss at Trondheim and the city falls.

A tank and MA army kill 3 defenders and take Cattaraugus. 1st Infantry Corps reaches the Sinai. The Iroquois empire is now split in two.

Destroyers Peterson and Mooseburger take out an Iro and Aztec frigate respectively.

Carrier Yorktown takes out a pair of Aztec frigates east of Edinburgh. Carrier Independence drops a Bab rifle east of Kiev founded this turn.

Destroyer Cummings that had been redlined quite a while ago from dealing with Aztec frigates along with the transport with 2 marines we were going to use vs Shaka finally make it home. Now parked in Perryville, Aleutians.

I’m sending the transport Colorado with escort DD Spruance to settle the spices that we can grab. This is a priority mission, as it is quite literally the last lux we need. I just rushed the harbor in Manila after sacrificing a couple units, so the Celt spice deal due to expire in 3 can do just that. The Spanish ivory deal still has 14 turns to go. From what I can see, there don’t appear to be any ivory sources close to us, so we’ll have to hope she stays polite and keeps taking our techs.

Carrier Leyte has two patrols, first spots and bombers take out a German caravel west of Guam. Second catches a pair of galleys NW of Guam. DD Hewitt takes down one, Carrier Constellation the other.

For the Iroquois, if we clear out Arabia, Iran and the “Stans” that won’t eliminate their oil. Ironically, west of Salamanca is Oil Springs that I believe would be their last source. This should be our new priority now, the Mayans can wait.

European deliveries. Flew in infantry, MA and a couple mobile SAMs. Deliveries over water included some tanks that were upgraded. On the GIUK chain, I renamed a lot of the transports with two letters and a number that are providing the needed shipping services. Please do not take them away for other purposes.

Pacific deliveries. Airlifting in marines through Hawaii to Rabaul. Rabaul is our main base of sorts with tanks, marines and workers. If we are going to keep doing transport shuttle runs, they can probably be minimal as we can bring over by air a couple units a turn. I don’t know that we need a lot of tanks though.

Military Advisor. We have 17 armies, 16 filled. One tank army in the Pacific at Manila. One cav army in the US at Albany that also has a half dozen modern armor and arty as our Western Hemisphere quick reaction force. The bottom 6 cities along the east coast of SA are unguarded against marine attack. One empty army awaiting to go up the GIUK transport chain next week. A pair of armies SE of Edrine, now Budapest. 5 armies by Adana with most of the artillery. Two MA armies healing at Lorient with a bunch of banged up singles and 3 armies by Cattaraugus, now Jerusalem. In the Pacific if you want to settle more places in New Guinea, go ahead but I hadn’t during my set. If you want to head north with the marines towards Bismarck, feel free, but Europe remains the more important theater.

If Paris or any other city flips again, I suggest using all arty and bombers to kill as much of the population as possible to eliminate potential resistors.

Domestic Advisor. South America has lost a lot of scientists to the entertainment industry due to a lack of markets. Size 6 and under are not an issue and remain scientists. Pop 10-12 and they tend to all be entertainers. If we rush settlers as needed that should help keep them under control. Otherwise, it’s 1189 in the treasury @ -62gpt and computers in 7. If you have a better use for workers in NA, feel free to give them something else to do.

Foreign advisor. The Zulu still have an active MPP with the Celts, so Shaka cannot be attacked without Brennus jumping in. We should leave him until that expires.

And the save.

...we have also started making inroads into NE Africa:
NE Africa 1450 AD.png

...and thanks to Gil signing up Smoke in an MA, more of Central Europe has passed into our possession as well:
Central Europe 1450 AD.png

The Mayan Cavs (and other units) have mostly been bypassing our more heavily garrisoned European front lines to go after the soft underbelly. They never get there. Be wary, though: Smoke has an RoP with the Hamster, so the towns just behind Lagash and Umma are not secure (that's what the MA and Armies are doing there).

Damaged Armies and individual units should mostly heal this turn.

I have not been razing+replacing Iro towns in Africa, partly because I prefer not to do this, but mostly because the turn before our Settler-stack arrived in Europe (via Greenland), Izzy's troops clogged up the Suez while trying to get through to Shaka + Lizz (I assume: they're at war), and she hasn't cleared it yet. Although she would probably cave to a "Leave or Declare!", I didn't want to risk the ultimatum (or offer an RoP) while we're still depending on her Ivory (and have so many towns ungarrisoned), so I blocked her GoTo instead: her troops have started retreating south, and they should have cleared your path by next turn.

Although I thought I'd disconnected his Oil, Hiawatha still seems to have Tanks to spare: and due to the Spanish obstruction, I have not been able to prevent him from recapturing some of his towns (albeit briefly, since our forces are still vastly superior). Using pillaging and Arty-bombing, I have just (this turn) got to the point of being able to force his incoming off-road. But we should not destroy any roads that we will need to get to our next targets!

Per instructions, most of our newly built troops have been going to Europe and points east/south. But we have also pushed a little further north through the German islands: I destroyed Heidelberg-in-Taiwan (Brennus is about to re-Settle it -- on the Wheat-Grass  ), and captured Munich-in-Okinawa garrisoned it for 1T, but then moved on). On the German mainland, Hamburg has just fallen, and there are a couple of Settler-/troop-carriers inbound. I was thinking to found on the Hill ENE of Hamburg (SW of Berlin), where the injured Maces are standing. Then (if wished), we can burn down Berlin to expose another Wheat-Grassland  and found our next town on the Hill to the NNW.

Regarding the F-15s (especially those on the Carriers): to ensure that we have effective air-cover, I marked some F-15s 'Interceptor' so that I could remember which ones I'd put on Air Supremacy-missions: this is important, because this mission apparently takes 2T to activate (@Kirejara tested this last year). Those marked 'Support' can then be freely used for bombing/recon, without accidentally deactivating our CAPs.

Of our towns building aircraft, some have been given a Rally Point in Europe. I discovered some time back that this causes newly built planes to get moved during the interturn (essentially auto-rebasing), allowing them to be put on combat-missions immediately during the following turn. The Tirana-airbase is out of range of western North Africa, though, so you may wish to reset the Rally Points (back) to Rome (or even Spain) to allow the remaining Iroquois holdings to be attacked. Since I left the Battle-animations turned off, I don't know if I managed to burn the Iro Bomber fleet yet.

The Spice-town in Java has been founded on the Hill for defensibility, so we need a Worker to road (and clear and irrigate) the Spice-tile and then a Harbour. The town will grow in 7T, at which point we can rush the Worker-build-in-progress -- or we can Airlift some out to Rabaul, and Transport them from there. (Our S.Am. farms are as developed as they need to be, and our trans-Continental Polar Express is complete, so I piled spare Workers up near Washington, so I knew where they were if I needed them).

WW (from the Zulus, but probably now also from the Iroquois) is still interfering with our farming. I mean, it's still just about manageable, but while they're only breeding Clowns, all those farms are not really helping us (a Settler every 30T is not the primary purpose of farming!). Our larger farms could really use (Courthouses and) Markets to let us set the Clowns to collecting Beakers/Taxes instead -- but we can't build those improvements while Mobilized. So until we're ready to go back to Normalcy (if ever?), I would suggest making peace with Shaka (if possible) and then re-Mobilizing.

Ok, I'll make peace with Shaka as soon as computers come in and then switch builds to research labs. Then I'll see how quick we can do markets in the south but don't want to wait on courthouses before re-mobilizing. We can do them later, maybe.

Then I'll see how quick we can do markets in the south but don't want to wait on courthouses before re-mobilizing.
If you don't want to put up Courts first, then before you demob, any northern towns which can do around 27+, 40+, or 80+ SPT (under Mobilization) could be switched to building 3T, 2T or 1T Cavs-to-disband (in the F1-screen, click on the 'Production' column header to order towns by SPT). 34+, 50+ or 100+ SPT towns could do MobileSAMs.

(60+ SPT towns can carry on doing 2T-MAs/ TOWs/ Marines)

Stockpile those units, demob, send them south, and we can get Markets disband-rushed in a single turn (5 Cavs or 3 SAMs per needed Market).
