His footsteps echoed hollowly through the great colony ships halls, giving a creepy haunted feel to the vessel, rather appropriate the admiral thought considering they were essentially a ship of ghosts twice over. Ghosts of the old world haunting the memories of the approach crew, and thousands of "ghosts" slumbering in the near-frozen near-death of the cryopods that were the last remains of their people.
The Sensor/Comm center was abuzz(relatively speaking) as he arrived.
"Report lieutenant"
"Sir, we have received final approach data from the target system. As expected it has one excellent habitable planet, and a couple of marginal possibilities. We've also begun to pickup comm traffic from other escapees. It seems we're a little late, but not too bad..."
The tone said something else was 'too bad'.
"However...?" The Admiral prompted.
"Sir, while a fairly extensive gate network has been constructed by the advance vessels it seems that the one assigned to our new home never arrived."
"What?" That was very bad indeed.
"Yes sir. Worse I've run simulations and with the rate that our drive system is deteriorating we won't be able to divert to our alternate destination"
The Admiral pondered grimly for a few moments.
"Very well, I'll have the Director revived and brief him myself then. continue approach procedures"
"Sir?"
The Lieutenant ask, obviously puzzled by the Admiral's lack of reaction to this devastating news.
"If there's nothing we can do about it then there's no point getting worked up over it son, we'll manage."
