Immortal University 104 - Hatshepsut

I guess when assigned to a normal civ it doesn't trigger automatic war like a minor.

I guess when assigned to a normal civ it doesn't trigger automatic war like a minor.

No, it doesn't. I have put in minor civs and swapped out civs/leaders/arts many in the past. Minor nation status is separate from the minor civilization, there's a flag for it in the world builder save. You'll notice that I didn't bother altering the art styles in either of these games, only modifying civ, leader, starting tech, and color such that I was the white "Egyptians" with no uniques :p.

The lack of starting tech makes some starts interesting. I like doing it though, both for the challenge and the non-trait based bias.

Finished this one up.

IMM/Normal Sid Style UN Win

Spoiler :

- Pacal capped after I took two cities with rifle/cannon/grenadier. I decided to use grens again since I knew I'd be seeing lots of rifles vs GK.

- I've heard that intercontinental wars are tedius but I don't mind them. What I did was queue up about 5 galleons (maybe a bit more) in each of my two western cities. Since I was kremlin rush buying, it was a simple matter to purchase them alongside other units. Then, simply waypoint to coastal city nearest the target and load up units in bulk. Nice and simple. One trick I did do: I was in theocracy so I threw a drydock in each coastal city. With navigation 1 + circumnavigation (map trade), it is possible to reach Sury's shore and unload your units 3 turns after loading them even with galleons.

- Sury was just outside of reaching assembly line, but I landed on his capitol and eviscerated it taking very little losses with CR II cannon and combat II rifles/grens. He capitulated shortly after.

- Everybody else on the continent was GK or GK's vassal . I nevertheless opted to go for him rather than Wang's protective infantry, further because I'd have to invade this side of the world to win diplomation or military anyway. GK had rifles but not even education yet, so he was a long, long way from infantry. Unfortunately he got to machine guns early, but I can live with that.

- I declared on GK and had to fight a good 70+ units. Fortunately, I got to bait them into a sury city repeatedly after beating down hannibal while waiting for him to take it (hannibal had infantry, but only 3 cities in one spot, one further up, and an off-continent, basically nothing). After sury, every city I captured on this continent became a COLONY (Elizabeth), allowing me to functionally garrison cities with nothing and not have to deal with them. GK's stack was actually out of the city by the time I got back, so I put up a large # of bombard promoted cannon and then murdered his stack with basically no WW penalty. The war lasted quite some time after that, but it was functionally over right then.

- Some later tricks: I used AP (I chopped it out in Ulundi after siphoning it from Shaka via tech trade) to force Wang to DoW on GK . I also grabbed karakorum, and then because Frederick feared my enemies I took a cease fire, took Fred as a vassal, then immediately declared war again . At this point GK was screwed. Fred had infantry, and thanks to :gold: and many vassal trade abuse I'd brokered my way to infantry + metal navy. Unable to replenish a SoD to handle my swelling #'s of gren/cannon/rifle and now infantry, GK eventually go rolled by a 3 way stack split. Heck, even Fred nicked one of his cities back.

- It's late and I didn't want to slog through an easy but lengthy war fighting WK with infantry/arty and/or nukes (had vassals researching nukes, could easily purchase fission using another tech and then broker fission for rocketry), but I work tomorrow so I just rush bought UN and voted myself winner instead.

Nice game TMIT! You might have cottaged more hills but it's ok :)

T 100 (325 BC)

Spoiler :
Finished bum-rushing Shaka cause I didn't want him getting big and being a nuisance. Plus, horses in BFC. I settled 1 SE so I could have dat gold and positioned first settler to capture pigs, elephants, and 2nd horsies. Tech path was AH to find horsies, mining to get dat gold, BW for whipping , chopping, and playing keep away from Shaka, hunting for the ivory, pottery, writing, alpha, masonry from trade, maths, IW from trade, begged mysticism, construction, and let Shaka live with one crappy city and made him gimme meditation and archery. I'm one turn away from HBR and it's time to decide whether Wang or Pacal gets bum rushed with elephants next.

Well, that went bad 1st try

Spoiler :

Well, was doing nicely and tried to avoid Shaka and settled just 1 city down south to take the pig and phants. Still him and pacal got to pleased fast as pacal spread his religion to him. And 1300 BC the fist came up. 1000 BC dow and game over.
Just so damn hard when Shaka manages to get 6 cities and still have a stack of 8 units(axes and impis) ready to attack. Even if I repel him and take it back it would set you back so far as you lose so much time. Of course there was no possiblity to worker steal from him either as only forests were by his north border .
And he has no problem getting bronze of course.

Like Izuul said, it's not as easy as it looks,
Spoiler :
since there is Shaka with his BFC copper. I met him very quickly, moved my warrior immediately towards where his scout came from and found his borders T7. His capital's outer ring is all forest, so no quick worker steal :(. My opening was same as Gwynnja's, but I attacked too quickly and my attack failed (despite temporarily capturing Shaka's cap). A cap with :hammers: would be better for this strategy than three corns...

Strategically game would be pretty much in the bag if you could take Shaka out, molest Pacal or Wang for workers and keep the other dude as a trading partner until contact with other conti.

Well, 2nd try went better.
Until 200 BC

Spoiler :

Well, I just went sooner for Ah as I knew I had horses. Rushed over to Shaka and sat on the bronze. Game over for him is what that meant. He only got to 4 cities before he got crushed. I was really struggling financially as the maintenance was high. I also wanted to stop Wang and Pacal to expand and I put up a couple of block cities. The wargold from Shaka just got me to Aesth which I traded for Alpha with Pacal. I was losing money bad and took peace from Shaka when he had 1 poor city left so I could get all his techs.
So I am now struggling towards Currency just breaking even at 0% but I have some nice cities, around 8 of them while Pacal has 5 and Wang 6. But Pacal is actually plotting at me as he is only at cautious and can't get anywhere :(
Man, Pacal plotting isn't every day. If I can evade his attack I can easily get to 15 cities while the other 2 can not get 10. Looking good but key is to get rid of that pest Shaka. Sooner rather than later....

Well, that didn't go as planned
Until 660 AD

Spoiler :

And here I was planning to (from now on) peacefully expand to 15 cities and getting lib. But Pacal!!! wanted differently. Ok, so he was cramed in with only 5 cites with no option to expand but to see him plotting at cautious was shocking.
Then he spreads hindu and gets to pleased. I beg from him and he still keeps on plotting and as soon as the truce is about to end he gets a stack of around 10 units up to my border rdy to attack. I had to change all my production to barracks and units instead which sets me back quite alot. Then Pacal bribes in Shaka whio is more of a nuisance though. My Wcs are more or less uselss against hikm as he has those holkans who he does produce and horse archers. Thankfully no feu and swords works ok vs that. Was abit of a grind to amass the army as I had just recovered from finacial meltdown. But hsi cities fell one by one(not that he had many to start with) and with one city left I took his techs for peace. Shaka is soon to be extinct. So while I am now up to 16 cities I lost a trading partner and am still not at CS :(.
Even if this continent is in the bag with Wang locked at 7 cities and me having room for 5 more at least I am hoping the other continent with all the wonders! aren't running away

Imm 1806 Space Victory

Spoiler :

Once my economy recovered from taking down Shaka i mostly did cliche stuff. I built the MoM, got some chain fail gold from the HE, bulbed Edu and Lib, upgraded HAs and phants with money from 2 GMs and then attacked WK.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0008_zpsa4259870.jpg

Not long after i invaded Korea, Pacal came to me begging mighty Egypt to protect his fragile (and frigid) Mayan civilization. Of course i agreed not really wanting to invade his ice ball to begin with.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0009_zpsa2fa17cc.jpg

By 1050 AD Korea was completely erased from the continent just leaving 1 Zulu city to eradicate. I did just that plus settled a few fillers a bit later to bring my final city count to 23.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0010_zpsc65049f4.jpg

I didn't really intend to go for Space (i usually don't), but after conquering the continent i realized that i really didn't feel like launching a large-scale naval invasion of the other continent, so space it was!

Of course not realizing i wanted to go for space until 1100 AD and thus not planning ahead, i didn't even get Oxford online until nearly 1300 AD.

Have watched the start of AZ's playthrough of ths on Deity. Looks like a tough map in some respects, but AZ seems to handle it really well, despite some setbacks. Very creative player. It always surprises me how much he whips in the beginning, like courthouses that will only save 2:gold:, and he changes build orders and techs a lot. Incredibly impressive to watch in action. I would think most who play on Deity take their sweet time so they don't get wasted by the bloated AI bonuses, but he's just steaming ahead and still often end up winning (I saw he said somewhere he lost maybe 30% of games on Deity).

Sorry for a little offtopic there, but then his playthrough may be worth checking out too :)

I've never tried immortal but I gave it a go. Had to restart a few times. Now I'm in 1 ad and doing... ok. One question though: when I tried to load the game using BUG it gives me a message that I can't. But I see screenshots here which are in BUG (or some other modpack). How do I do that?

AZ is expert player and his Let's plays are priceless. Bad thing about it is that he has to play fast to keep Youtube's entertainment value and is not playing his best; overall strategy, tactics, AI & diplo management are superb but he doesn't micro. If he'd check every city every turn (or close to it), those games would last 20+ hours; I guess he has to compromise that for Youtube. I bet he'd win 95% of his games with more micro.

@caoimhin

Immortal save works with BUG installed in CustomAssets folder; that setup reads the game as it has no mod and is preferred setup on CFC. If you install BUG as standalone mod you have to use save provided in zip, extract it in worldbuilder folder, load a mod and start a game via Play a scenario or Custom scenario. That works with any mod.

Yeah this one was pretty nerve wracking.

Spoiler :

Damn Shaka and his partner in crime Pacal! Together they were a thorn in my side the whole game. I lost a lot of turns trying to control the balance of power on my continent trying to keep Shaka from getting too strong with only mixed results :-( The good news is in the end the game cut me some slack with Shaka not teching rifling until late, heh :goodjob: In any case this set of videos should at the very least be entertaining.

Here is a link to the playlist ( the final videos should be uploaded soon ):

@Pangaea & Dubioza - Thanks for the kind words. I actually play pretty slow compared to TMIT, but I guess I've never seen anyone play faster and win on deity civ 4, so maybe I'm playing pretty fast after all. I'm convinced that a good 10-15% of deity civ 4 games are just unwinnable no matter how good you play because of things like super-early dows, AI relation bonuses, or just a crappy start. The way I play in the videos will probably win me a solid 70% of deity games on a normal size / normal speed pangea map, but it's a completely different story when you're talking about another type of map, like fractal or continents where you can't control half or more of the AI's and the game could already be lost once one takes over a continent or just gets too much land somehow. Basically if you can't get complete control over your continent by about 1400 AD you're chances of getting enough momentum to bring the other continents under control seems to decline rapidly :( Another problem with videos of this type of map is launching an overseas invasion correctly takes time. And of course turns are taking longer at this point because there's more of everything. So I usually rush that and pay for it :mischief:

Not sure what the fuss is about. up to 75bc Immortal.

Spoiler :

Settled Thebes on the coast on the mountain. Will make a nice GP farm later. Settled west for double gems/4 dyes. Settled copper/pigs/ivory city and settled below for pigs/ivory and flood plains. Final city north of Thebes for final gems.

Teched towards BW and then towards PH. Oracle for IW. (wanted the gems.

Beelined construction. Built a few axes once i had IW. (Saw Shaka early). Shaka played it pretty peacefully. In any case built 9-10 pults, and a mix of axes and phants. Heading towards Shakas capital. 2 cities taken already. Killed off his 10-11 stack in his city next to my borders. Mostly archers/impis and 2-3 axes. Shaka looks pretty weak now.

Main issue will be keeping up tech wise with Maya and Koreans. Heading towards calendar now anyway for the 4x dye.

@AZ,

Good to see you back and at it again! I just finished watching the first 7 parts of your videos... It says 7 of 9, so I am assuming there will be 2 more? Anyways, once again, there were lots to learn from in your videos as always. Now that you have your whole continent all to yourself, I think the next logical step is to recover and catch up, and then decide on your VC... looking forward to see which path you took, and how you take yourself to the finish line.

I think your timing on DoW'ing Shaka was just right... had it been a few turns later than that, it might have been turned out completely differently!

Spoiler :
Yeah i guess deity level could face some issues on this game. Some games are roll of dice on what an AI will do.

Basically if you can't get complete control over your continent by about 1400 AD you're chances of getting enough momentum to bring the other continents under control seems to decline rapidly

My viewers never liked it, but you can very often suck up to the right people on the other continent and screw the diplo there with espionage civic/religion switches for UN wins. This allows for some timing/margin for error on maps that allow it, which is surprisingly many with a little effort (get #1 in pop, kick people out of religion or into "wrong" ones, grab +4 trade, +2 borders, +1-2 resource bonuses ASAP (on deity they meet you soon too)).

I've won games by globally emphasizing food and growing into unhappiness/culture slider to get #1 pop :D.
