Immortal University 51 - Brennus

To 1130AD:

Spoiler :

Switched to Judaism, Washington is pleased so my flank is secure. Did manage to trade Currency for Math and Monarchy. Built a force of cats and swords to possibly make a move on HC, but he got maces so I called it off. At least I have them for insurance.

I've been pretty far behind in tech all game. Bulbed philosophy, paper, and education and traded them around to make something of a comeback. Washington beat me to liberalism. He doesn't appear to be trading it around so I'll tech it anyway.

Though my tech rate is bad, I do have a several good production cities, so if I can get steel I should be able to spam out some cannons/muskets and take some ground.

Building libraries/universities for oxford. Once I get that and the palace in Vienne my tech should improve.

HC is in war mode. This stack is pretty likely aimed at me. I do still have 10 catapults to smash into it if he invades.

Tech picture... not as bad as it was before. HC fears that I'm becoming too advanced. I wish!

Downloaded BUG 4.4 and but it in the Mod folder. Started BTS, loaded BUG but when I choose the autosave a message tells me that no Mod is required.
Anyone knows how to load the save with BUG?

srad - BUG can be installed 2 ways - in single player mode (custom assets) or as a stand-alone mod (they call it multi-player...whatever). I think it's common to do what I do and install in single player mode. There's an option on install to select it. This installs BUG into custom assets so that it loads when you start BTS normally - no need to load a mod.

However, it should be noted that this mode can conflict with other mods. This is why I have copies of my custom assets folder. Ruff_hi actually created a custom asset switcher tool that I use to switch between my different copies of CAs. It sounds complicated but it's actually very simple. Of course, if you never use other mods then it's never an issue. But I know you do the GOTMs, so it will conflict with BUFFY. (So I have a BUG/BULL/Blue Marble CA folder copy, A normal Blue Marble copy for BUFFY and anything else, and a NULL (no mods) for BAT.)

So, to answer your question, TMIT provides an unmodded save (I don't think he ever used mods as far as I know). It can't be loaded with the stand-alone BUG version, but any normal save can be loaded up if BUG is in single player mod. Also, if you create games in BUG single player mod - the saves can be loaded with or without the mod.

hope that made sense...i'm sure it didn't :)

Every time I start a game on Immortal I get frustrated and quit around turn 100 and start a new game on emperor. Do emperor barbs start with archery?

@Gwynnja,I know the barbs are crazy on IMM!.I had to reload this map a few times just to get used to dealing with the barb archers earlier on.

one tip(you probably already know this)I found usefull was was rather than use the heal icon to heal a wounded unit I used the telescope icon, that way the pesky barbs couldnt sneak up on my unit while he was healing and the camera was focused elsewhere.

Liberalism:

Spoiler :

The kind of trades I could be making with everyone, if only I'd bothered to meet them...

And then maybe I could have got Monarchy earlier, and avoided this ******** play:

Bulbed Philosophy and 1/2 of Education and arrive at the Liberalism tech situation. I guess I'll just take Nationalism... I'll need to draft soon anyway I think, and maybe I have a shot at the stupid Taj with marble.

My best production city (!) building the stupid Taj, which I doubt I'll get.

Post Liberalism tech situation. Still haven't met the rest of the AIs!

And empire:

Just popped a GS. Don't know what to do with him. I guess my plan is a rifles/cannons war on Huayna. Or would horses be better? I don't like him as much as he likes me, and he has a lot of wonders (including SoZ, will that be a problem?)

1 AD :

Spoiler :
I settled in place.
The scout explored counter clockwise and met the neighbours.

So floodplains overkill, is it ?
I hesitated between settling the pigs to the east first or the western floodplains.
I went for the latter because it would allow something I seldom do and will pay off went Civil Service comes in (yeah, you guessed right !).

Early techs :
Agriculture -> Pottery -> Bronze Working -> Animal Husbandry -> Writing (pause till Library)
-> Sailing -> Masonry -> Polytheism

Settling :
- The 1st city is 3 tiles west of the capital. That burnt a floodplains but it is able to share all floodplains from the capital. While its cottages grow, Bibracte is able to focus on production and whipping.
- The 2nd city was west as well, just south of the pigs and started a Library asap to run 2 scientists. Its river tiles were farmed.
- 3rd city was south by the sheep/horses/fur.
- Ulterior cities were a race to Washington's settlers since I didn't block land early.
- Working early cottages instead of farms hurt production, so I lost a spot to Washington along the river south of the capital. As well, Huayna will end up owning the copper tile north of the capital. A city of his has revolted due to culture pressure in the last turns, north of the 3rd city, maybe I'll end up owning it ? (Or maybe he'll DoW ^^)

Classical era :
Litterature -> Partial Alphabet then trade with Huayna -> Currency -> Trades a little before and then : Maths, IW, Monotheism, Monarchy from Washington -> CoL -> Civil Service (in progress).
Civil Service will find 4 towns and 1 village in the capital : 24 base commerce.

Wonders :
Not much : The Great Library.
Otoh : 300 gold from The Parthenon.
Huayna : had TGW and The Parthenon.
Washington : None

Religion :
We're all Hindu. Huayna also funded Judaism.
Forgot we were Spiritual and I'm not in Organized Religion, although building a lot of infrastructure and Hinduism spreading to... 6 out of my 9 cities. Will do so when Civil Service is in (just noticed).

Workers :
Shortage. 1 per city.
Blame Washington and the infra I built...

Military :
1 barracks was just built, 2 are coming.
1 Gallic Warrior is operationnal.
Reason ? 2 barb cities spawned in the south east and if I don't get them, Washington will...

Next techs :
Not sure.
The Philo bulb will be possible next turn (if I set research to Meditation now).
Maybe Music for the free GA : I have a monopoly on Litterature on this side of the world.

I settled my second city:

Spoiler :

On the marble. I built 2 warriors in 5 turns working a forested plains hill because of barbs then took the capital's wet corn and built 2 12 turn settlers allowing the capital to work corn and 5 fp cottages at size 6... Good idea or not?

Spoiler :
If you grab Oracle, Temple of Artemis, Parthenon, The Great Library, maybe the MoM, etc.
Yeah, that doesn't sound like a bad idea :P

Otherwise, the AI wouldn't settle there early, I think, because of the lack of food. Is that right ?

Just ragequit my game due to being in a massive tech hole (cannons and grenadiers against everyone else having stuff like infantry and destroyers), and of course getting screwed by my war target vassaling to a huge AI, after I took over half his cities and still couldn't get capitulation out of him. Seriously considering never playing with vassal states turned on again.

as I got up to now with your ideas.... it will certainly pay out :-)
very creative idea of growing cottages in my eyes.

Thanks a lot, this gives me a clear picture how it works! Actually I was concerned about conflicts with the BUFFY mod.

Spoiler :
It's now or never. Use GS on a golden age to speed up future war with Huayna and in the vain hope that it might double itself by speeding up the Taj (Washington ended up beating me to it).

goldenage.png

Finally send out an emissary to meet the remaining civs. Never mind the barb galley, I don't have any sea food anyway :(.

caravel.png

Belated switch to theocracy. Made me realize though, that having half theocratic troops is about the same as having all. The non-divinely inspired half are just cleanup anyway.

theoc.png

Drafting/treb upgrades complete, golden age winding down, it's only decent to give Huayna the news of this frankly cowardly declaration face to face (cultural disputes aside, our nations have been buddies since time immemorial, and I have 1.4x his troops with a significant military tech advantage).

I don't know if it was really a good idea to accept Washington as a peace vassal, but I couldn't resist those pink eyelids, and I didn't want Huayna dragging him into the conflict.

peacevassal.png

Monty "bravely" flings himself into the action without even pausing to upgrade himself with current weaponry. I'm a big fan of mobility on super medics.

A nice example of how not to specialize an HE city:

Huayna caps, secluded to a single offshore city:

Switch to peace civics. Probably should have gone back to OR, but hey, I'm SPI anyway.

This is where I usually quit and start a new game. I can't manage overseas invasions or modern warfare anything like TMIT. Genghis has capitulated Mansa, and I would like to hit him first, but I'm guessing it might be better to wait for machine guns at least.

@ Babar

Spoiler :

How's the tech picture looking? Modern warfare is easier than it looks once you're used to it. Collateral initiative rules still apply, but there are more ways to go about it. Marines/transports/carriers/fighters/destroyers, tanks/bombers, nukes/paras, infantry/arty, or some combination can make short work of the AI even w/o a tech lead.

However, it's often possible to just win space.

Demographics (will improve when Huayna's cities come online):

demogs.png

Looking at the situation again, it seems like I should attack as soon as possible. I was thinking I should build lots of boats and more troops, while teching towards artillery (14 turns).

Domination, 1870

Spoiler :
After building far too many frigates and galleys (I was about to get combustion anyway), I took on Genghis with infantry, artillery etc, then fighters and tanks. Only near the end did he manage to field a few rifles. So the only thing slowing me down was my own logistical incompetence. I did almost the whole thing slogging across his land, when I really should have used more naval landings. Washington managed to take a couple of cities himself, which annoyed me slightly.

After Genghis gave up, Mansa capitulated after losing a city.

Then I decided to go after Augustus, who wasn't pleased with me anyway due to many trade embargos, and I really couldn't be bothered with another naval invasion. By this time I had some bombers. He had tanks too, but no fighters or SAM... so it wasn't a particularly even fight, although it went on far too long for my liking. I thought he would cap after I took Rome and another city almost without loss, but he kept fighting till he had three crappy cities left.

My GNP was never too flash.
Going from FM to mercantilism put my beakers from about 400 to about 550.
Changing out of merc to SP when I started taking Genghis' cities would have made a huge difference, but it was a bit irrelevant by that stage anyway.

I was never the heroic little guy, winning against the odds:

Units lost/killed etc:

The latter part of the game was quite a slog. I can see why I normally avoid this kind of thing.

If you want endgame wars to go faster, it's time to learn to loop units in cities and waypoint to strategic locations. If you don't care about the game lasting 10-20 extra turns you can cut time by well over an hour, possibly more.
