Imperial Glory

Will be starting update after dinner, as cleaning is not quite yet done. In the meantime, go enjoy the new ABNW3 update!

Starting the update now, but in addition to that generic statement, there's more! Recently, I've had a very low tolerance for stupidity and irrational decisions. The first few orders I received for this NES very nearly made me give up on it entirely and learn to hate all of you. Fortunately, there were bright spots in the darkness, then some of you revised following my angry post, showing that perhaps I misjudged you all. Because of this, and the fact that this NES was never intended to be "easy" for anyone, I will be viciously punishing the foolish opening grabs that some of you made with the wisdom of probably thinking: "That's not my color, but it should be! BLARGH! ME SMASH!" My favorite part to date is the bit where some of you never even considered the sheer logistics of getting 50,000 men from Europe to the far side o the world in this time frame. I thank those of you who made such ridiculous errors of logistics for giving me someone to vent my frustrations upon. Hopefully, you will be so filled with outrage that you will rage quit and open doors for friends from RL who want to jump in.

I'm pretty sure I'm the one who tried to ship 50,000 men half-way around the world. I wonder what happened to them....

Get out of my brain Karalysia.

How do you expect me to anticipate Cthulu awakening? You must have angered the Elder Gods with your nasty Protestantism. Just be glad that Hastur hasn't cast his eye upon us yet.

EQ says my invasion will be partly successful since I have a colony there :D.

If this thing still ends up backfiring I'm blaming you though.

We can only pray that His great and terrible hunger and wrath has been sated with this offering of blood.

If not I suggest we prepare another detachment of 50,000 more souls to offer His mighty maw.

Because I got a late start on it, update (while short) will be done tomorrow early afternoon.

News in Europe

ROYAL GRANT TO BAVARIAN UNIVERSITY. Munich, Bavaria. King Maximilian of Bavaria made a generous donation to the University of Ingolstadt this year, pledging a sizeable part of national income, as well as his own purse to the institution. The King, in his speech at the university, has pledged a new direction for Bavaria and the importance of organized education and the acquisition of knowledge both for the individual and mankind. Several other members of the Bavarian nobility and even some foreigners have pledged lesser funds, hoping to garner favor with the royalty's new approach to intellectualism. Enrollment at the university has begun to swell, and leaders of the institution believe that they may be able to greatly expand their operations over the next few years.

SPANISH THRONE RAISES IRE OVER FARMING AND RESETTLEMENT PLANS. Madrid, Spain. The Spanish monarchy has put into motion demands to reform the current methods of farming in continental Spain. Calling for advanced practices of crop rotation and field preparation, the King has quickly managed to anger the various aristocratic leaders who resent the monarch infringing in their domain. So far the effort has been a miserable failure, as few agree to follow in line with the monarchy, continuing what they've always done in their lands. The few who have changed their methods have stated that the increase in expenses caused by the method bears little to the king, who does not have to spend his own funds. Further irritating Spain's nobility has been calls for resettlement to help exploit the empty lands both in Spain and in the colonies of the New World. As with agricultural intents, this has been mostly ignored, as few nobles have any desire to upset the standing order of things, much less forcibly lose their local subjects and supports to a settlement effort. POLAND ESTABLISHES NEW MILITARY BRANCHES. Warsaw, Poland. King Clemens of Poland has overseen the creation of two new branches of the Polish government and military. The Imperial Guard is the first of these, an elite fighting unit of the army of the Poles. These are to be the toughest soldiers of the Polish army, with greater skill and fighting ability than anyone else in all of Poland. The construction of two small sloops has heralded the construction of the Polish Imperial Navy, setting sail upon the Baltic Sea. Built under the supervision of their experienced Courlander allies, the Polish navy is said to be in the beginning stages of greatness.

AUSTRIA TO INTRODUCE NEW LANGUAGE FOR MILITARY. Vienna, Austria. Emperor Francis of Austria has set into motion a program to help better integrate the variety of groups which serve within the Austrian army. The program will work several common words from the various languages of the country into a new lingo to help the army better communicate on and off the battlefield. The Austrian leaders of the military greatly resent these changes, believing it to be a step back for the Emperor, and have had led to murmurs of dissent both within the military and among the Austrian aristocracy. SWITZERLAND MAKES PROCLAMATION OF NEUTRALITY. Berne, Switzerland. The Berne Canton has declared Switzerland's overall neutrality in European conflicts, calling for other European powers to respect its boundaries and desire to avoid warfare. The surrounding nations of Europe have remained silent on the matter so far, but there seems little reason to reject the Swiss goals of pacifism. Some cantons seem less willing to accept the Berne Canton's declaration, but most see the wisdom of avoiding Europe's inherent history of warfare.

VENETIAN AFRICAN COMPANY ESTABLISHED. Venice, Republic of Venice. The Doge of Venice and several other wealthy men of Venetian society have recently worked together with their finances to fund the creation of the Venetian African Company. Hoping to cooperate with the current European settlements in Africa, the Venetians hope to expand their shipping empire further into the Atlantic economy. So far, high tariffs and heavy competition from the English and Portuguese have prevented the venture from making any sort of profit, further draining the already feeble Venetian economy.

FRANKFURT INTRODUCES MANDATORY MILITARY SERVICE. Frankfurt-am-Main, Frankfurt. King Frederick of Frankfurt, in an attempt to compete with the military prowess of major European powers, has instituted compulsory military service for all citizens. This has quickly outraged the people and nobility of his country, who see it as infringing upon their lives quite handily. Resistance to the move has grown quickly, and many refuse to carry out the orders of the monarchy, as the populace usually fails to appear at any training or drilling event. The military is also giving lackluster support to this move, feeling that it would detract from their overall quality of soldiers and service. (-2 Stability)

OTTOMAN ATTACK ON MALTA MEETS WITH FAILURE. Valletta, Sicily. The Ottoman Empire has made a new bid for control in the Mediterranean Sea, but have paid a hefty price for their effort. The island of Malta, which has been preparing for an Islamic invasion since the Crusades, constructing some of the finest fortresses of the past few hundred years, was the Empire's first and last target. The Sicilian fleet and army were well prepared for the Ottoman attack, which was quickly obvious and word spread across the Sea of the massive force being assembled. Upon landing on Malta, the Ottomans took the first fort, after losing over a quarter of their deployed force to only a single Sicilian regiment. The remaining Sicilians and the heavy artillery of the island soon brought to ruin the rest of the Ottoman expedition and trashed the Ottoman navy, which was caught upon the leeward side of the island and easily destroyed by the smaller Sicilian navy. The remnants of the Ottoman force soon fled the island, returning back to the empire in great shame and defeat.
Casualty List
Sicily: 2 Regular Regiments, 1 Artillery Battalion, 3 Sloops, 1 Frigate
Ottoman Empire: 11 Regular Regiments, 10 Sloops, 3 Frigates, 2 Ships-of-the-Line

HANOVER ESTABLISHES NEW ACADEMY. Hanover, Hanover. King George III has provided royal sponsorship for the new Hessian Military Academy in Hanover, hoping to sponsor the establishment of a strong military corps within the country. As a center for military research and education, as well as training, the new school is said to soon be one of the finest of its kind in Europe. Advisors from France and England have been hired to fill out the ranks, as well as from some of the more veteran armies of the former Holy Roman Empire and Austria. Talk within the Hanover government has stated that future plans could make attendance to the institution mandatory for Hanover military officers.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE CREATED. Rome, Papal States. At the instigation of the kingdom of Spain, the Pope and several others, a group of Catholic nations have banded together to establish the political Catholic League. While not a full alliance between the powers, it is said to be a strong working for the expansion and organization of Catholic Christianity throughout the globe. The Papacy has lauded the Spanish dedication to the Church, and most Catholic nations throughout Europe have been invited to participate. Most predominant is the protection of the Papal States, and with the recent Ottoman attack upon Malta, some fear that a new crusade may be required to preserve the safety of the Pope from Islamic aggression.

TARANTO NAVAL ACADEMY ESTABLISHED. Taranto, Sicily. The Sicilian monarchy, with the recent outbreak of war with the Ottoman Empire, have found it to be needed to build up its naval forces. Therefore royal funds have been dedicated to the creation of the Taranto Docks and Naval Academy. Hiring the best available instructors from England and France, the Sicilians have also recruited local talent, including the admiral responsible for the coordinated defeat of the Ottoman navy off the coast of Malta. The new base is said to be the new center for Sicilian naval production and training for the undetermined future.

News from the Americas

FRENCH AGGRESSION ALIENATES NATIVE ALLIES. New Orleans, France. The French government has begun launching aggressive military expansion through Louisiana and Canada. Deploying unheard of military forces to the region has quickly begun to alienate the former native friends of the French government. Previously, having been kinder than the English, the French were much more capable of being friendly. The influx of new French settlers, mostly criminals and the poor from Paris, have further exacerbated the situation, pushing into lands which the natives were formerly free to settle after being pushed west by the Virginians. Rumors of war have begun to erupt and the natives have been attacking remote French patrols, though no organized conflict has yet been launched.

News from the Dark Continent

SPANISH SET UP NEW COLONY. Rio de Oro, Spain. The Spanish crown has financed the construction of a new fort at Rio de Oro south of Morocco. Stated as part of the combined efforts to influence the control of Morocco, they have so far been left undisturbed by the few local natives. The efforts to set up the colony have been taxing as the colony requires numerous supplies to be brought in from Spain proper, as most local agriculture has failed and the few settlers require aid. No garrison has been deployed, and the town has been shelled several times by Moroccan raiders and marauders from the north.

SPANISH INVASION OF MOROCCO FAILS! Valencia, Spain. A disastrous expedition was sent to Morocco this year from Spain, well armed but with no provisions for supply or logistics. The Moroccan forces successfully avoided combat while the Spanish marched through the northern Sahara before running out of water and food. The Spanish were forced to turn back thanks to the elements and lack of supplies, many dying en route from thirst, disease, or hunger, all while constantly under attack by raiders. Without even the basics of warfare being thought of for the campaign, the Spanish military has been devastated without even entering into battle. The casualties have been high while the Spanish sullenly boarded whatever ships they could find back to Spain. Needless to say, the nobility of Spain have been outraged at the foolish waste of so many fine soldiers. (-1 Stability)
Casualty List
Spain: 22 Regular Regiments, 4 Guards Regiments, 4 Cavalry Regiments, 10 Artillery Battalions

SCOTTISH EXPEDITION TO MOROCCO DESTROYED. Edinburgh, Scotland. Despite the failure of the earlier Spanish expedition, the Scots determined to make a different approach against Morocco, coming from the Atlantic. Escorted by only four warships, the Scottish navy was soon met by the forces of the Sultan of Morocco, which greatly outnumbered them. The Scottish forces sent were soon sent to the bottom of the Atlantic, while a lucky few were captured and probably tortured to death by the heathens. Met with such a miserable failure, the Scottish have greatly protested this event, with so many of Scotland's finest sent below the waves by the monarch's foolish underestimation of the enemy. (-2 Stability, -1 EP)
Casualty List
Scotland: 10 Regular Regiments, 2 Cavalry Regiments, 4 Artillery Battalions, 3 Frigates, 1 Ship-of-the-Line

GENOA ESTABLISHES FIRST COLONY. New Liguria, Republic of Genoa. The Doge of Genoa has assisted in the financing of a new expedition to Africa to set up the Italian nation's first colony. The settlement of New Liguria is stated to be part of an effort to enter into the lucrative slave trade, though no contacts have yet been made with the local African leaders. Hefty competition from the Portuguese and English have made the efforts so far futile, as the Africans continue to deal with the Europeans they are more familiar with. The Genoans have persisted nonetheless, and continue to work to set up a feasible fort and colony in the region.

ENGLISH BEGIN SETTLEMENT OF MADAGASCAR. Madagascar, England. The English government, infringing upon historical French claims to the mostly empty island, have begun supporting efforts to settle Madagascar. In conjunction and support with the Scottish settlement along the Zambezi River, the English have been making an effort to exploit the inherent resources of the island, including vanilla and sugar production. So far these efforts have proven unsuccessful as the settlers continue to struggle, relying heavily upon imported goods and what they brought with them to survive. The lack of a garrison to feed has made things easier, but two privateer raids over the latter part of the year resulted in the capture of several ships and a loss of several supplies.

AUSTRIANS EXPAND COLONIAL RULE. Ludwigsstadt, Austria. The Austrian government has helped finance the first new colonial venture since the acquisition of Klein-Venedig from Spain. The African settlement of Ludwigsstadt has been established on the Pepper Coast of the continent, hoping to exploit and produce that particular luxury good. The colony has been off to a rough start, struggling to produce local foodstuffs for the settlers, before any luxuries goods could be brought together. The large amount of people for the initial settlement and the even larger garrison have made sustaining the population very difficult for local leadership. The colony has frequently been forced to buy supplies from nearly European settlements, as the homeland cannot provide what they need with enough frequency.

TUSCANY ESTABLISHES FIRST COLONY. As with the trend of several Italian nations of late, the Tuscan government has made an attempt to set up a new colony in the Dark Continent. The colony of New Tuscany has been hindered by the massive garrison sent to the colony, draining it quickly of food stocks. Though the colony has avoided starvation by purchasing food from other Europeans, the large garrison and population make it hard to make any sort of profit from the established base. The farms which have been attempted have only met with limited success, while the local natives have proven hostile to the large amounts of troops tromping across their lands. Farms have been known to be burned and patrols attacked, with very little to show for the Tuscan efforts.

News from the Far East

DUTCH AND FRENCH FAIL IN DISASTROUS INVASION OF MYSORE. Puducherry, France. The colonial powers of France and the Dutch Republic launched an attempt to destroy the Indian kingdom of Mysore this year, one of the strongest powers on the subcontinent. The French started the war with a triumphal march from Puducherry with over 15,000 soldiers. They were met with nearly five times the amount of native troops, who possessed better artillery and soon were led into the slaughter. The French army was routed after a horrific battle, which left the army scattered after the commander was killed by a Mysorean artillery barrage. Mysore was quickly able to mop up the French forces, leading to a nearly total destruction of the French colonial army. A smaller army was brought in by sea in late December, but local Mysore gunners and soldiers were able to prevent them from making any inroads, and with French India threatened by the main Mysore army, they were forced to withdraw. A smaller force of the Dutch were met by Mysore in the southern part of the country, consisting of less than 2,000 imperial soldiers. They were easily butchered by the much larger Indian force, which proceeded to launch an invasion of Dutch India. Meeting with only minor resistance, the Indians were able to overrun much of Dutch India, until a large army was brought from the Netherlands, and managed to stop them in their tracks in the battle of Travancore.
Casualty List
France: 9 Regular Regiments, 5 Cavalry Regiments, 4 Artillery Battalions (-2 Stability for Puducherry)
Dutch Republic: 8 Regular Regiments, 3 Artillery Battalions
Mysore: 21 Regular Regiments, 3 Cavalry Regiments, 1 Artillery Battalion

BOTANY BAY SETTLED BY DENMARK. Botany Bay, Denmark. Danish settlers have arrived on the small continent the English have called Australia this year, hoping to carve out a new life in the mostly empty land. The new colony is designed as one of settlement and expansion rather than the exploitation of any specific resource. The great distance of the colony from Europe and the slow progression of local farming have led this to become one of the most costly colonies to maintain for the small European empire. Requiring food to be shipped to the other side of the world, the settlers have begun trading with the locals for what few supplies they can provide.

OOC

Note: Having your forces stationed in a colony nearby to a distant country you intend on making war upon BEFORE You launch t the attack will make the war have a much greater chance of success.

On that note, some of you REALLY overestimate the cargo capacity of a sloop. It'd take one massive ship to carry a regiment (aka 1,000 men). Therefore some of the more ridiculous orders I've received were modified based on the various circumstances. I've determined to be rather kind, perhaps too much drink, and in the case of the highly stupid Dutch/French move against the Mysore coast, I simply just ignored your orders and orchestrated the ensuing disaster mentioned above. Sucks to be you.

To go with the message I have above, I should bring up the point of logistics. Logistics are the key to warfare, not numbers or technology, but the ability to bring supplies to your soldiers on the front lines. I am being less merciful here when it comes to orders than I have ever been in my time of moderating. If you don't even make the simplest mention of providing some sort of supply for your soldiers, you will suffer for the oversight.

@Milarqui: As stated in the rules, only one colony is allowed per turn. Being listed second, the Borneo expedition is the canceled one. Hawaiian efforts were also ignored and so were all the ones you attempted through manpower.

@Circuit: I believe we may need to talk about the overestimation you have for the existance of democracy in your country. Only the landed aristocracy that exists have any real power in your nation or voting rights. I also disagree on numerous counts with your interpretation of the various political groups in your country. Also the sloops were not built due to what I mentioned earlier in the thread.

@Haseri: You got my interpretation of Switzerland's stats dead on. Proceed with the nice orders.

@TheWesley, You'll have to do better than that for a project. For now the EP has been put into Army research which is the closest I can get to doing anything sensible as part of your orders.

@Karalysia: You had no colonial map, so I had NO idea what you were talking about in Africa, therefore I did nothing. The 3 EP has been banked.

As promised, if you didn't send orders, I opened up your nation. A few nations have by that reasoning been open to the public. And no, that does not mean that you can switch your nation, unless no one else in the world wants the countries that have come open.

For those confused, we operate in regiments, not divisions. Therefore if you said division in your orders, I assume that you mean regiment. As stated several times previously in the thread and in this update, a regiment implies 1,000 men.

I did also warn you all in the first post not to underestimate the strength of uncivilized nations. They can and will hurt you if you give them the chance, which some of you did.

@EQ

Good update, but you didn't buy some of the units I asked for last turn. My current army is 118 Regular Regiments, 10 Guards Regiments, 20 Cavalry Regiments, 49 Artillery Battalions

That means I lost 2 infantry regiments and an artillery battalion. I realize you sent 2 regular regiments and an artillery battalion to the colonies as I specified, but the problem is that in my orders I also bought new units specifically for this.

Spending:
5 EP on trading post in West Africa to be called Ludwigsstadt
1 EP and 1 manpower on 1 artillery battalion to Klein-Venedig (Venezuela)
2 EP on 2 infantry regiments and 2 manpower to Ludwigsstadt
2 EP on 2 frigates
2 EP on scientific development technology
2 EP to develop “Army Language”

Indeed you are a force to be reckoned with. We are willing to give up some of our colonial possessions to your kingdom as compensation for what has happened. Of course, we can't just hand over the entire colony to your kingdom, but we are willing to cede the larger northwestern portion of it, as shown by this map:

Is this acceptable to your people?

@bombshoo: I misread what you were aiming for, I thought you wanted 2 EP, 2 Regular Regiments, and 2 Manpower sent there, not that you were producing two new regiments. Fixing in my copy of the stats now.

We can agree to your proposal as long as we also have compensation of 5 EP for losses.
