I'm running on an older rig (about 3 years old anyways), and am looking to improve my FFH2 performance.

I love playing games on huge maps, but there seems to be an issue (as with my vanilla Civ4 experience) that when the map gets filled up with units/cities, that the game crawls to a halt and regularly crashes -- usually in between turns. This happens far more in FFH2 than in vanilla Civ4. Another problem is when I reload there seems to be a memory allocation error and the game crashes to desktop (again, this usually only happens on larger maps when they get filled up).

So to sum up: freezing when the AI is taking its turn (white screen of death in windowed mode followed by crash to desktop), and memory allocation error when reloading.

I've tried toying with all my gfx settings but this seems to have minimal effect on these (seemingly inevitable) lategame issues.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to circumvent these problems? I don't mind playing on smaller maps but my real love of this game (in vanilla and especially FFH2) is the epic scale. I'd love it if people could share with me some advice on how to fix this!!! :)

I assume you have turned all of your Civ4 graphic settings down as low as they can go. I had (and still have) problems playing FFH late game, and while my computer does not freeze (I avoid large and huges maps) it really slows down. A program that I recently acquired helped cut down on a lot of these issues. It is called Advanced System Care. I use the free version, which you can get here: http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html

The two functions I really like are in the Tuneup section of the program: SmartRam and Game Booster. SmartRam constantly frees up ram in the background, and Game Booster has an option to shut down all unnecessary programs to help your games run smoother.

Hopefully this helps.
