In Monopoly, how much do you hate it when...

I really do hate the mad trades everyone else makes.

I remember last xmas playing monpoly, I managed to get two streets (mayfair and the one next to the jail).

Then the other 4 players teamed up against me :|

Still won when they all managed to land on the mayfair street in one go, but that was luck.

Monpoly partnerships. blah.

And frankly landing on the income tax is preferable in the late game, as is going to jail.

Have any of you actually finished a game of monopoly?
Yes, and here's how: you play exactly the rules and only the rules. No free parking cash giveaway, no extra 200 if you land on go, ALWAYS innitiate an auction when someone turns down a property, no wacky deals beyond the intent of the game, etc.

Part of what annoys me greatly with Monopoly is that people indeed play whacky variants that completely break the game. Free parking cash is the most infamous one.

My favorite move is to trade for monopoly by offering to pay for development and split the rents and then turn around and trade away the entire monopoly for another one.

You can only ever do this once. :p

If i am playing with about 3 other players and have established a monopoly of any particular color early in game with some houses that can potentially bankrupt someone who have gotten a monopoly of another set of colours and just landed on mine that have the houses,I usually give a person a "free pass" on the condition that I can have a "3 free pass whenever I want to" so in order to keep the rival in the game (and to safely secure of potentially having landed on his houses that can bankrupt me) to bankrupt other rivals in the game.It usually works on whoever is new to this and afterawhile can discover that it actually position me as more favorable to win the game in most circumstances.

What kind of player would accept giving you 3 free passes in exchange of one for them?

Only the desparate ones that have little of no money and will be bankrupt and kicked out of the game but have a monopoly(3 of the same colour) that can be used against others. It is only a means to use it against a player that want to remain in the game but leave me out of paying him 3 times in future scenarios such as landing on the monopoly he owns.

Excellent thread. Yeah, it hurts, and other players buying your colours is a real kidney shot as well!

Giving people free passes means the game never ends. It's pretty much always in your favor to take their money and bankrupt them. Even if its your friends or family ;)

Not necessarily so.If the person that have given me a valuble option of "3 free passes" whenever i want and the other players are more powerful by having more than 1 monopoly than i do,it is usefull to use the one you have saved against them.

I suppose, but if they are really that desperate to give you 3-anytime passes than they will probably suffer a big hit from your place and therefore you would want to weaken them as such, by making them pay up. Yeah?

I guess so.Of course i always want to make the game interesting by keeping others in it for my own amusement such as loans or some kind of debt collecting.Of course it only work for the desparate ones.

That doesn't make the game interesting, it makes it dumb. Might as well start another game; that would be interesting. Unless you're afraid to lose and want to savor every win...

I'm surprised the people you play with tolerate that.

Naw, it can be fun. Sometimes its more about the company than the game.

I'd say it always is, so we generally start a game over when someone either wins or we know it won't be close. Might as well start a new round of trash talk.

:)

The percent also includes the costs of your properties and the costs of buildings, and the mortgaged properties subtract their mortgage value from this.
Something else, when people play with the "Free Parking Rule", what do they do?

What i do is who ever lands on free parking gets the community chest money

Yes, I have finished Monopoly. Recently, in a game with my mom, she lost by landing on Boardwalk with 4 houses. :faint: She said it was dangerous approching Go because I had Park Place and Boardwalk, and in between them was luxury tax. Before that, chance, which was usually bad for her. Then after that, Income tax, but before that, Community Chest, which was also bad.
The time before that she won with the blue properties, but I had all the railroads.
