In RTW, is it possible to upgrade units?

The disband button on the unit description scroll.

How about you use them to destruction?

Yeah but i would prefer to have my gold being spent on modern units. The upkeep of units is far too draining to justify keeping obsolete units.

No you can't. Would be rather interesting though, and it would also be a little more cost effective than training new units, just have certain upgrade fees like when you retrain your units after a battle.

no dont disband them, use them to maintain order in your empire. They kill men just the same as cohorts. I use them as supplimental or support troops, as border ro fronteir guards, as garrisons for newly conquered cities, or as regular armies against weaker enemies. There are plenty of uses for an old Hastatii-Triarii-Velites army, you just have to get creative

Cheezy´s a good point. Also, you can use them as living shields for your real troops. Especially on LAN. You put them between your legionnaires and the enemy´s archers/chariots/cavalry. They´re just cannon fodder after the Marian Reforms.

They're outclassed after Marius, yes. But to say that they're just cannon fodder is not entirely accurate IMO. After all, they're still comparable to most units that other factions have (even better than some, IIRC)

Well, Princeps have the same stats as Armenian & Numidian legions, but it´s much more worth to make legions instead.

True. But still, they're not MERELY cannon fodder ;) They can still fight, even if not as good as post-Marius units. And that's a good enough reason to bring them to battles rather than just disbanding them

Another question folks: What does influence mean? I have a general with about 6 or 7 influence - what special bonuses does he get?
