I don't want to get too involved into this discussion because this is much larger issue than it actually seems to be.

I want to point out something that some scientists could agree with.

Human specie doesn't only have sex in purpose of producing children but because of having close intimacy allows strenghtening of social bonding.

It's like Jacksons case: He feels that by sleeping close to children, he gives "love" to them even that there is any point of actual sexual act. Every parent has slept close to their children, pedophilia and incest is just one step further from it.

One of the problems is that people think that children feel bad about incest when they don't necessarily do. They start feeling bad when others say it's abuse.

This isn't to say I support any act of pedophilia or incest. I just say that society does make the boundaries but trying to "justify" these boundaries can be harder than thought.
One of the justifying methods is religious dogmas or some kind of objective moral point, others include the possible aftereffects of such relationships.

Homosexuality example in prison can be seen as normal human bonding rather than actual will to have long sexual relationship with the partner from opposite sex.

Whether we "Choose" certain actions or not is always debatable. It's like having heart attack. You can try to eat "healthy food" but your genes and your enviroment affect you also, so you cannot ever say sure whether you had control over it.

Pariah: I think you're drawing some pretty far-reaching conclusions. Even if it wasn't outlawed, it would still bear the stigma of association with rural Alabama! :D And I would not believe that the main reason that brother-sister relationships are rare today is that it's illegal. If it's a consensual relationship, keeping it out of the knowledge of the police should be fairly trivial.

Re: the difficulties for teenagers to find partners, how about a governmental match-making service? After all, experience shows that married people are less likely than singles to commit drunk driving and similar costly misdemeanors, so it should make good sense for the national budget! And the Internet wouldn't be clogged by the frustrated ramblings of single geeks!

(Logically, there ought to be similar numbers of single women around. Since they're obviously not hanging around on the 'Net, what the heck are they up to? Hatching nefarious plans to take over the world, or what?)

Hehehehe. Well, I don't particularly see the acceptance of incest as a manner of making families “box” themselves sexually in their core members, Egyptian-style. And while I know that there are shy teenagers everywhere, I think that the stereotype of the timid boy who can't even talking to girls and relies on hustler magazine until college is in a very accelerated march downhill. Same thing about girls.

Also, I don't happen to have a sister, but I also don't have any particular sexual interest on my girl cousins - I see them as friends, people I've grown up with, and hence, that I percieve in a non-sexual way. I tend to believe that this is an even stronger feeling between brothers and sisters, at least in the majority of people. In fact, some friends of mine, discussing this very issue, have mentioned me that no matter how sweet their sister's asses are, they just don't lust for'em.

Not only that, I'd like to point out that in our liberal days for sexual behavior, many man have far more than one sexual partner, and many woman are far more liberate as to sexual partners than in a few decades ago, not in a "sex in the city" style I admit, but it's truth nonetheless. So, puting incest as a risk to humanitie's renewal would be a false point simply for that, if not for everything else.

In all, I don't think it will mean a severe change in the sexual behavior of mankind, for as far as I am aware, incest is not a particularly popular sexual fetish just waiting a chance to take over the world. ;)

Regards :).

In the UK, it would be a Norfolk or North Yorkshire association. As the dumb farmer's son in Viz asked his dad:
"Paw.. Oi can't marry my own sister, now can Oi?"

To which Farmer Palmer replied:
"Welll... it never stopped your mother an' me, zun."

Incest probably is commoner than we think in many "developed" countries; like homosexuality before the mid-20th Century, it would be a "love that dares not speak its name.":crazyeye:

There probably aren't any reliable statistics around, but I'd be very surprised if sibling incest was even as common as homosexuality, which after all isn't exactly a majority pursuit.

(Incidentally, either the homosexual density among people I know is way beneath the 10% you frequently hear claimed is universal, or most of them are hiding it very well.)

Edit: Added missing words.

Oy, stop this libel right now!

I live in Norfolk and I am totally unrelated to my only
live-in partners (those being (a) deathwatch beetle,
(b) my neighbours cheese stealing stray cats (c) lice
and (d) lost spiders!)

INCEST AND DEFORMITY
Incest does not CAUSE deformity - it would simply increase the likelyhood of deformity, that is already genetically predisposed, to show itself. That is roughly.

It's to do with recessive and dominant genes.

If a particular blood-line were, for arguments sake, 'perfect' and free from deformity causing genes, and other such issues, then incest would NOT cause new things to appear - it would actually decrease the likelyhood of new things - where 'out' breeding would increase it - by adding new genes to the mix. In the first scenario, the only avenue for deformity would be via mutation.

And incest is no cause for mutation.

You proved your points on double stanndards, but at the price of also proving that some forms of incest are to be tolerated on the same grounds of personal freedom. I don't know if you think that it was a worthy price to pay for catching your adversaries in a lapse, though, as I think you probably see "incest" as something as reprovable as you think of homosexuality.

You know what they say, don't you? "Beware of what you wish... you may very well get it".

I don't really see how it changes anything. When the liberals finish with gay marriage they'll take up some other issue as their crusade. I don't think incest is that far down the list.

There's always something isn't there

:) You KNOW those Liberals are all closet buggery bandits, and just itching to get with their sisters and dads...

Ok, then. Keep fueling the liberal's "evil agenda" with reasonable stances, if it makes no difference. Help is always welcomed. ;)

I think the numbers are way higher for deformities in infants born to women over 35 than to children born to first cousin couples.

But, Speedo has already pointed the lack of danger out.

Anyway, I really don't see why it should be illegal. The legality of it isn't the thing that prevents me from marrying my sister. Cousin marriages are much more common, and aren't especially dangerous.

@Col and EdwardTKing:
I don't really mean to victimize any particular region - but why hasn't anyone objected to the prior identification of rural Alabama?

As for future liberals wanting to rehabilitate incest: I don't see why. As the World becomes more of a global village, with long-distance transportstion easier every decade, people will probably have more opportunity to meet partners elsewhere, and will be less likely to stick with their neighbours or relatives.

Easy!

Incest is a choice; homosexuality is an orientation. If incest is made legal, you won't have people "coming out of the closet".

No, I don't buy what you're saying. First, both are choices. If two family members are related to each other, they can be naturally attracted to each other. Similarly, two men or two women can be naturally attracted to each other. Both situations, require the people to make a choice as to engage in a sexual act though. On the same note, two heterosexuals make a choice to have sex or not, regardless of natural attraction. If there's no choice in any of these scenerios, it would be rape, I believe.

There is no population of "naturally incestual people" in any country on Earth. Instead, you'll have people CHOOSING incest. Why shouldn't we allow it? Because incest leads to some pretty wacked-out stuff genetically. Does homosexuality mess with the gene pool or produce monster babies? Didn't think so.

According to a site that a Google search gave, which I'm sure is not the most well-respected, there are populations who accept incestuous relationships. I tried to find other sources to confirm what they were saying, but I couldn't, so perhaps they are wrong.

However, I would like to point out that you are right. Homosexuality doesn't mess with the gene pool or produce monster babies. Instead, the gene pool dies as all of the people die. Homosexuals don't reproduce with each other; therefore, there's no offspring to examine.

I don't desagree with your take on incest, but I don't understand your argument.

Why all the sarcasm in here? Wasn't it just 10-15 years ago that even gays thought that "gay marriage" was an idea supported only by insane radicals?

Major props to FredLC for a well thought out debate. Good job. :goodjob:

As a libertarian (small "L"), I believe in choice of consenting adults, or "victimless crimes", regardless if I agree with those choices being made.

That being said, homosexual relationships, incestuous relationships between adults, polygamy, etc., should be tolerated. (Social acceptance is a different matter, which is being partially addressed in this thread.)

However, PP mentioned earlier that it has been proven that homosexuality is 100% genetic. Again, I have no desire to prevent people from pursuing their relationships, so I ask this question solely out of a quest for knowledge. Please point me in the right direction of irrefutable research that has proven the homosexuality-from-genetics angle.

I know several people that admit to choice, both in their homo/bi relationships, and one of them has now even chosen heterosexuality in order to raise a family (and I know some folks who have been oriented towards same-sex relationships since they were 10 yrs old). Perhaps it is a percentage of gays that are oriented according to their genetic disposition, but we have to honestly admit that there are those that also choose their sexual orientation. Some folks do things just because they want to experiment and have fun. Big deal.

Otherwise, I'll have to fund research that proves that my genetic disposition has forced me to be attracted to several females at the same time, hence complete societal acceptance of polygamy. :D (j/k, btw, can you even imagine the life of having more than one wife?? )
