Indian units request

CFC is an illusion??? Dangit, that's the last straw. :(

@BM: ok, like I said, I didnt want to start an argument...I did a whopping 3 days (2?) of research...thats not even enough to write a decent paper...all I was saying is that based on what I had read, it was not such an important issue. If I am missing the point than I happily step aside and help support the making of these units :)

as far as the Toga Vs Dhoti...I can help argue the point, but from a modelers standpoint I can also see the issue...

Ok, a Toga goes over the shoulder, and drapes down the back, or is tucked in...
the Dhoti is first wrapped around the back, and then carefully tucked both between the legs, and (EITHER) over the shoulder (leaving a fairly large "drape" over the right arm)or again around the body until it it tucked in (like how one might wear a towel out of the shower)

I (again) may be wrong on this...but thats the impression that I get from what I read/read(?)

I was pulling your leg about the dhoti.:p There are already clothing props shown to work for any one who wants to make units wearing Indian dhotis - some people prefer to use the other prop that looks like a toga.

I wouldn't make such an issue at this point about the sacred thread, except that there are two units already made, and there look to be more, whose makers went to some effort have wear that necklace. As far as I can tell the only reason those units are wearing a necklace is because it appeared in the concept art for a fan mod of another game. :hmm: One game-fan drawing vs. a substantial body of historical information and culturally relevant artifacts :hmm:

Okay, I won't rant or whine about the sacred thread anymore. I will however, happily work with any unit maker who has questions about it, or wants more images to work from.

What colour should the thread be?
While the modern threads I have seen or seen photos of are the natural flax or cotton (unbleached) color, I see no reason that for game purposes they couldn't be civ-colored.

Edit:
Here's a statue of a Pallavan king showing the "thread" as a band. I believe it has the "conforming" look you suggested.

Son of Edit:
Remembered I had this from a brochure of a museum exhibit I visited. Clearly the "thread" can be ornate. Not only is this one a band, it's segmented (probably the real object would have been jeweled or of a precious metal) and note the worked decoration visible just above the hip.

Here's three new Indian units I've made and will pop into the Anno Domini mod:

Any luck with your units Plotinus?

It's actually an authentic Indian weapon, you ask Blue Monkey.

Go on, Blue Monkey, tell 'em!!
Trishul (and before anyone points it out, a final A often gets dropped in conversation & certain dialects)- like most Indian weapons there a version used by the deities - how else is one to slay demons? In this case Shiva's the dude.

I don`t care if its authentic, its great! :D Captain Nemo!
Yeah; while has mixed ancestry he's a Sikh. So it's authentic, even if you want to use him as a king or gl in, say, a steampunk scenario.;)

A couple more questions on those Golden Warriors, since I'm getting a subliminal feeling that people want them finished:

I'm assuming that long straight black hair, and a lack of facial hair, is right for these guys. Is that right?

Does the archer's quiver have to be on his lower back/hip, as in the concept art, or can it be in the more familiar upper back position too? Either is doable but the latter is a little easier simply because it's more similar to the animations I already have.

Thanks!

Plotinus, I'm going to be cheeky now, so I apologise in advance. You see, the mod is actually missing two Indian archers. Would it be possible please when you make the Golden Archer to do another, which could simply be exactly the same, but civ-coloured all over (to make it look different)? I would be extremely grateful if you could, but also would understand if you couldn't do that :) .

Well, I shall see what I can do, but I can't promise anything.

Here's where I am so far. As you can see, I've tried to copy the skirt shown in Rob's preview images. Blue Monkey's images suggest that it would be more authentic if the blue part weren't there at all, making the skirt much shorter. I can easily make that change if it's thought preferable. Anyone? If I did that I could give him golden shinpads too.

Also judging by Blue Monkey's images, the helmet isn't exactly right, but I think it will look fine at civ scale. I may add a sort of medallion thing to the front of it, with a big red gem in the middle, as sported by the warriors in his images - would this look good? The character is seriously blingy already... I've made the sacred thread grey rather than civ-coloured because I think that putting such a thin strip of civ-colour against the gold wouldn't work properly with a unit palette.

I would lose the blue on the skirt...also I think the shield could use a "dimmer" maybe a ring of civ color, or the dots?

also, IMO the "thread" to be proper, should be closer to the waist on Stage left(his right)...as it is, it looks more like a bandoleer or something

I like the helm as is...all in all it looks great

Actually, I think it looks fantastic as it is. I'd prefer you to keep the civ colour on the "skirt."
