This the chat log of an INFURIATING conversation between my co-workers and I about Civilization.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ME: Most addicting game ever list:

http://tech.uk.msn.com/gaming/photos.aspx?cp-documentid=154231396

Do you agree?... I can not support a list of addicting games that excludes Civilization… I just can’t. That omission proves the creator of this article doesn’t know jack squat.

Todd: I agree with some, not most. I also disagree with the order, if they were supposed to be in any perticular order anyway. I also wouldnt say civ is one of the most addictive game ever either. :P

ME: What… are… you…smoking?

There is even a self-help group: http://www.civanon.org/

Granted it is a joke group, but the fact that this is a joke MEANS it is a widely known stereotype. Civilization is super-crack-crazy-addicting!

I can attest to that personally. I have played the game all night, I have dreamt about it, I think about playing it at work, when I play it, I don’t want to stop. It is very addicting.

Even if you don’t think it is the most addicting game ever, you have to admit that a large number of civilization players would disagree (and this goes back to the early 1990s when Civilization first came out).

Brad: w.e he is smoking, can I have some?

John: I WOULD JUST LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT I HADN'T EVEN HEARD OR CIV W/E YALL TALKED ABOUT IT HERE.

Paul: Seconded, widely used stereotype eh? Don't think so... I can start a joke site for people who love Muppets or whatever, that doesn't mean its widely used... and then some dude comes along googling Muppets one day and tells his friends his Muppet addiction must be normal because there's a joke site about it, therefore making it a widely known stereotype? Don't matter what he say, guy who wants to get it on with miss piggy has a problem... its called Kermit, and he's a bada** when he's jealous.

ME: Terrible invented comparison… that isn’t just “some guy” making a site. It is a semi-official site created by the company Firaxis (creators of Civ 3, 4 and 5).

Sid Meier (the guy who’s name comes before the Civilization title) is even in some of their videos. This isn’t some crackpot who came up with something random on his own. This is something the ENTIRE civilization community agrees on.

The word addictive and Civilization are nearly synonymous. Also, if you haven’t heard of Civilization you must be a consol centric gamer (Civ:Revolutions on consoles is a joke. Civ on the PC is like a fine whiskey (sophisticated, deep, and nuanced), Civ on the consoles is like watered down 2dollar shots at a Mexican beach resort for drunken Spring Break kids.)

John: Hahahaaha He called me a console centric gamer.

LOL.

ME: I take it you consider yourself a PC Gamer then?...

Well not hearing about Civ would be the same thing as never hearing about Doom, or Command and Conqueror, or The Sims, or Wing Commander, or MechWarrior, or Quake or any number of widely known PC games/series.

You come off like a total n00b.

John: I have heard of all those games.

OH SNAPS I COME OFF AS A "n00b" (Seriously? Did you just do that?)

You are coming off as a pretty elitist d***** nozzle right now. JUST FYI

Paul: I think i played civ 2 or 3, and i have to say i was not impressed. It did not entertain me.

Todd: Civ is not in the same league as any of those games. except maybe wing commander cuz ive never heard of that one lol. George Bush played Civ 2 once. He lost to the computer within an hour.

ME: Never heard of Wing Commander? … *groan*

The Civilization absolutely belongs with those others; it is in iconic PC game!

2) Civilization IV
Developer: Firaxis
Publisher: 2K Games
Year Released: 2005
Synopsis: One of the Civilization games was absolutely going to be in the top 5 in this list, it was just a matter of which one we chose to occupy the spot. For years, it was largely understood that Civilization II was the best in the series offering up complex strategy in a palatable and even graceful format. Some out there would probably still argue that it's the best of the bunch, but we decided the latest went above and beyond that great title with more improvements than can be counted. From the revamped damage system to the diplomatic improvements and inclusion of religion, Civilization IV provides the most addictive 4X experience on the market. Even worse for those of us incapable of quitting to desktop is the inclusion of a very workable multiplayer solution. Turn-based strategy has never been easy this way, but Firaxis managed to make it easy, make saves work, and make it easily as much fun as the single player if not more so. Civilization IV is a brilliant game.

Number 2 on the best games of all time list. I know IGN isn’t the MOST respected site, but PC Gamer and many many others rank Civilization games up near the top of the pack for PC Games. I… don’t… understand…

Paul: If it hasnt been apparent, we are not the demographic that this game applys to where as you are. so i dont know why youre trying to tell us this is awesome... need we compare this to the pokemon conversation where i had sex with ponyta? accept that we dont agree, and live your life content in the fact that you get so much pure joy from civ that you must try to inflict it on others.

John: PC gamer gave early AoC [Age of Conan] a 87.
Fact is... Critics are stupid and half of em get paid to give good reviews. So citing them? Not really convincing.

Todd: Pokemon Red/Blue > any Civ game.

ME: It isn’t about converting you, or convincing you that Civilization is the best game. You obviously have different tastes. I don’t understand your point of view, but then again, I don’t have to.

All I want is the acknowledgement that:

A) The Civilization Series is known for its addictive nature, and belongs on any list of “Most Addicting Games of All Time”
B) The Civilization Series deserves respect because they have (generally) all been prime examples of excellent strategy game design, and the series has earned its place among other titles definitive of their genre (Doom, C&C, WoW, etc)

Can we at least agree on those two points?

BEST GAME EVER>

I want it, and what did I tell you about sending me s*** ME has said? Everything he types comes off as contrived and pretentious - it's the most f***depressing thing in the world. He says the kind of s*** in these e-mails that would make you punch a guy in the face if they said it to you in normal conversation.

Brad: What the?...

ME: I want it, and what did I tell you about sending me [poop] ME has said? Everything he types comes off as contrived and pretentious - it's the most f-ing depressing thing in the world. He says the kind of [poop] in these e-mails that would make you punch a guy in the face if they said it to you in normal conversation.”

I have a simple solution for [John's Friend]’s problem; do what he asks and stop sending him my “s***”.

As for your reasons:

A) You don’t need to play it to acknowledge what its reputation is (I have provided an ass-load of proof, or do your own research if you don’t believe me)
B) I don’t know how I described it to give the impression it was bloated or not fun; but as I said I’m not asking for you to personally like it or think it is fun. Just a respectful “It isn’t my type of game, but it seems a lot of people who have played it consider it one of the best strategy games of all time”.

I don’t like WoW, I consider it simple, derivative, and catering to the lowest common denominator. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect it for being an insanely popular and beloved game. If I was making a list of “Most Addictive Games of All Time” World of Warcraft would be on the list. Same thing with “Top Ten MMOs of All Time”, just because I hate it doesn’t mean it isn’t a benchmark for the genre.

I didn't know where else to post it.

I was hoping to get some opinions on the converstation.

I thought some people might find it entertaining.

Sorry, I agree with them. While *I* love the Civ series, I freely admit that it doesn't have the kind of mass appeal that most of the games on their list possess. Mario Kart, Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and World of Warcraft exist in a broader cultural sphere than Civ ever will.

It is true that civ isn't as massively known as some other titles on the list, but it wasn't a list of "Most Addicting Mass Market Games"...

So they should include Civilization because as I said it is known as a very addictive game.

Civ fans are hardcore, no doubt. One more turn, yada yada yada. Not enough people have the patience/time to learn its ins and outs. Its a GREAT game, but many wont give it a chance, so its never going to be as big as some games.

need we compare this to the pokemon conversation where i had sex with ponyta?

Nevertheless, I agree that you were coming off as a little pretentious, and I also agree that I see no point in you showing this to us. Are you trying to get sympathy?

Honestly, yes, I think I am looking for sympathy.

I don't mean to sound pretentious, that's just how I type :(

There's a rumor floating about that C5 will include a super secret unlockable unit.
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=370720

Clearly, Gillos's little rant (if indeed that is his real name) has been posted to this here forum in order to plant clues as to that unit's identity.

My guess, Ponyta.
She's got a 5% chance of possessing a Shuca Berry; not really sure what that is, but I already want one. And the awesome ability of being able to Run Away.
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Ponyta_(Pokémon)

I mean, we all knew Pokeman had its dark side.
But who knew it was so unbelievably complicated; check out the charts.

my opinion?

you and your co-workers should spend less time dikin about!

edit @ crazy george, its not a rumor, the lead designer MR SHAFER made thea nnouncement himself!

Given some of the titles in the list (Doom, Starcraft, Red Alert 2? Really?) Civilization should have been there, but posting this here seems kinda silly. Should have been in some other part of the forum at a minimum.

Having said that, Civilization is perhaps the best Strategy PC game of all time and it has a deserved reputation of being addictive, but strategy is hardly a popular game time in the year 2010, unless you mean RTS. So I'm not surprised a computer gamer, especially one that wasn't around in 1991 wouldn't know this.

Heck, Tycho over at Penny Arcade, a computer gamer, isn't a fan of the series. Mainly, because 4x games don't appeal to him.

As for IGN, they're hardly unique in the industry. CGW, which used to be THE magazine on computer gaming said this:

While some games might be equally addictive, none have sustained quite the level of rich, satisfying gameplay quite like Sid Meier's magnum opus. The blend of exploration, economics, conquest and diplomacy is augmented by the quintessential research and development model, as you struggle to erect the Pyramids, discover gunpowder, and launch a colonization spacecraft to Alpha Centauri. For its day, Civilization had the toughest computer opponents around - even taking into account the "cheats", that in most instances added rather than detracted from the game. Just when you think the game might bog down, you discover a new land, a new technology, another tough foe - and you tell yourself, "just one more game", even as the first rays of the new sun creep into your room... the most acute case of game-lock we've ever felt.

But who knew it was so unbelievably complicated; check out the charts.

as someone who had pokemon red/blue come along at just the wrong age to get hooked into..... its really not very complicated.

The combat is the only strategy element to the game, firstly. Its not very interesting combat either. Its pretty much just straight up learning what beats what.

Wow I'm not going to lie you sound like a big Moderator Action: *snip* no flaming here.

It's obvious that your friends/coworkers are very casual gamers... insulting them for their lack of video game knowledge is rather redundant. It just makes you seem like a huge pretentious nerd.

That list on the first part of your post was silly, some really crappy games in there no one every played ^>^, quite a few of them are good and adictive though, but to say they are "the most addictive" is rubbish I can name tons of games I have found very addictive at the time I played them, and some of them only apply if thats your type of game,

also for example you cant put a game like street fighter 2 in, because it has an alternative that gives exactly the same addictiveness and game play and was just as popular, which was tekken. Who ever made this list just listed a few of their favourite games in a very bias manner ^^.

I wouldn't call Civ one of the most addicting games of all time. In my experience it's pretty easy to put it down, because it's so well designed in the sense that you can come back to it and continue from where you left off without any issues.

That said some of the friends I've introduced the game to have clearly become hopeless addicts. I've seen them awake in the dorm lounge after an all night civ session when I was waking up to go to class.

Anyone over 20 who plays PC games should have heard of CIV, Civ4 even had TV commerials.

Sounds like they might have been yanking your chain dude :)

Then again when I think of some of the weird jap rpgs that some of my friends used to play and get pissed off when I had no interest in, anything is possible

Playing through the night is part of the mythos of Civ.

Some of those games, like Bejeweled belong on that list for sure, but some of them aren't addictive so much as just good or popular games. There is a distinction.

the fact that they are working on the 5th version (7th if you include Civnet and revolutions) is enough to prove it's popular.

Being addictive ≠ being popular.

All addictive games are popular. Not all popular games are addictive.

games like Doom don't do it for me. I never actually played, but I did play Doom2. It got repetitive real fast. Killing one monster is exactly the same as killing another.

Civ on the other hand is a game that has progression. Serious progression not just a better weapon or a different level. I think that's why I prefer Civ games and RPG's as my games of choice. I need progression.

I see no reason why Civ shouldn't be on that list. Doom wasn't all that. But it's kinda silly to get worked up about it.

Civ for me gets repetitive really fast now. You start out with the same strategy with each game, and get bogged down in a slow late game.

Lemmings needs to be on the most addictive game list, though. And the Ultima games on the best games list.
