Initial look at Nexus, 3D Unit Art and reskinning

Thank you Lemmy and Captain Binky :)

I can't find "civ5artdefines_unitmembers.xml" in my folder (looked everywhere)
Where is it located please?

EDIT: found out ! it's in "Resource"File

2. Using Regedit set HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/FIRAXIS/Tools/ToolAssetPath to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v (if using Vista/Windows 7) or C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v if using XP.

Ya know... this path doesn't at all exist for me in Regedit.
Under Firaxis, the only thing listed is "ModBuddy" and under that are version numbers.

Is it possible that this has something to do with why modbuddy won't launch?

New question :
How did you set the action tab in mod buddy for you mod ?

Nothing is needed in the action tab. You need to have "Reload Unit System" checked in the main mod properties (is this called the modinfo?). Just right-click on the mod in the file browser, pick Properties (from memory) and scroll down until you see "Reload Unit System" - check it and you're done.

Have you installed the Visual Studio 2010 Shell - you need this for Modbuddy to work.

Other than that probably just double check you are following the path I gave for Regedit.

I definitely have visual studio installed.
Are you using windows 7 x64? If so, I can take screenshots.

Ahhh!
I figured out why I was getting the "missing components" error!

If anyone else is getting this, you have to install visual basic studio to the same physical disk or file structure that has /STEAM.

That was my problem, I had the two apps installed to two different physical disks, but a series of re-installs discovered that little hiccup.

NEW TOOL! Gives you much better and simpler to use material editing support and should make reskinning units a lot simpler:

So here's our new tool, IndieStone Nexus Buddy. Based on the Material Maker tool it allows you to import an FBX and create a unit without even touching Nexus. Not only that...

It allows you to edit most of the unit details, both the art details and the actual unit's stats and such. It all generates sensible values based on the model filename and such, and the parameters of the unit are mostly equivelent to a warrior.

Click export with all default settings, not typing in a single value (beyond setting up the model and textures obv), and it generates this in the export directory:

Drag the tree into ModBuddy and add the UpdateDatabase reference, tick the Reload Unit tickbox in the properties. Literally that's the only thing you have to do, run the game and:

Hurrah! That's a unit from FBX to in the game without touching a line of XML. :)

I can't resist to show you my new unit
I did it from the Great Spy unit from CivIV slightly reskinned with GIMP
I know it's far from perfect but i'm not an artist ;)
If anyone want it i can upload the files

Hey how exactly do you extract the .fpk files? cause I ran the script with nexus, but all of those folders you mentioned still had .fpk files. Also i can't find the .fxsxml files, where are they?
