Input on choosing a laptop

If you're making a custom-built gaming desktop, you can get a rig to play the games you listed for super cheap. It would make more sense to spend more on the laptop, due to the price/performance ratio and more expensive nature of laptops.

My custom PC is more for running higher end games. I will likely include an i7 Processor and 32GB of RAM.

Okay, gotcha. Not sure why you need an i7 or 32gb of RAM for gaming, though.

EDIT: And since the games you'll play on your laptop are so old, I'll second the Thinkpad recommendation.

I plan on using FRAPS to record games for making lets plays and machinima so I would like to have a powerful processor and lots of RAM so I don't have any lag.

i7 could be useful, 32gb of RAM is just laughable, though.

Because it's not that much memory?

This is before I need to close a browser in order to be able to open Photoshop:

4.5GB is plenty for PS, also why would you have all three of those browsers open?

Not really.

If you're only playing games that are super-old like the ones you're listed, you don't really need to spend that much money.

The computer Zelig talked about earlier is good. Look at Thinkpads.

HP EliteBook 8460p LJ507UT Notebook PC - Intel Core i5-2520M 2.50GHz, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, AMD Radeon HD 6470M, 14" Display, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit for 579.99

Vs

HP ProBook 4545s B5P40UT Notebook PC - AMD Dual-Core A6-4400M 2.7GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, AMD Radeon HD 7520G, 15.6" Display, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit for 569.99

Which would you say is the better deal or would the ASUS one be worth the extra?

What are the screen resolutions?

I'd never get below 1080p on a laptop.

Are the trackpads non-awful? (A lot of laptop trackpads aren't.)

I tend to use a USB mouse so the touchpad is not really an issue. It lists the displace as "HD anti-glare LED backlight display" for both.

That would imply a 1366x768 screen.

Screen resolution and an SSD are the two most important things you should look for.

1366 x 768 is the resolution for both. Both seem to have most of the specs I need. A good CPU, graphics card and RAM. I am not interested in SSDs. Pay more for a smaller HD? No thanks. Bigger is always better.

For the twentieth time, you do not need a graphics card to play games from ten years ago.

If you're building a gaming desktop, why do you even need a laptop to play games?
